Shave of the Day Thread - 2018

Thank you for you question. When I first received the razor I tried the Proline P and also the Feather Pro. I found that even though I was getting a good shave from both of them, they seemed to be on the mild side. Decided to try the Feather Super Pro to compare against the others. Wow! Even though the first shave with the blade felt a tad aggressive at first, once it dialed in, I was surprised I was able to get by with a 2 pass shave with very little touch-up and no irritation. I've since had several other shaves with the same blade and it's mellowed out but I'm still getting some of the best shaves I've ever had. In my opinion, this is the perfect blade for the Vector.
Sounds good. Similar to my experience with the same blades in the Colonial General so I'm assuming I'd like the Feather Pro Super's in the Vector. Thanks for the feedback and Merry Christmas @rlroadie2004 , we'll look forward to more of your SOTD images in 2019.(y)

Blades: GEM and unknown
I've been enjoying the Blacklands Sabre of late and had been ignoring my other GEM style razors so I pulled out the GEM Junior this morning. I needed a fresh blade so grabbed a blade out of a small box of blades that had been supplied with one of the GEM style razors I had purchased over the last couple of years. I commenced the shave and was thinking 'this isn't the GEM Junior I remember' as the blade felt rough and tugging. After two passes I thought 'this can't be right' and grabbed a GEM blade and loaded it up to complete the shave. Wow, I couldn't believe the stark difference. The GEM blade was so smooth and efficient, it totally restored the shave and made the shave very enjoyable. Faith in GEM Junior restored.:)

The only identifier on the offending blade was Made in USA. Anybody know what they are likely to be? I won't be using these for shaving anymore.
This is the only blade system I have for which haven't tried different brands of blades. Are there any alternatives that are worth trying or should I stick with GEMs? I have seen others comment previously that their preference was GEM after trying one or two alternatives so I hadn't bothered going looking as I've been very happy with the Personna GEM.

It is more than likely a "paint scrapper" blade. Looks the same but certainly not the same. Many have tried the hardware store blades and many have given up on GEM razors because appearances are deceiving. :) True GEM blades are a cut above :) Ebay sellers have been known to include a couple of hardware store blades to sweeten the pot but ultimately unless people know other wise the GEM experience can be badly soured.

Shameless rehash of a previous photo.
Used plate 2 today which performed really well with the Vidyut platinum blade. Two uses and it’s tossed though. No complaints but won’t buy anymore.

Soap is dying and withering away nicely. Boxing Day could be the last hurrah but depends if any slips out of the bowl into the sink.

My pleasure and hope it works for you. Merry Christmas and a joyous and prosperous New Year.

A lovely 3 pass BBS after a couple of day's growth.

The idea that big brushes have to use more soap is easy to disprove with a stick because you apply the same amount of soap as always - you just end up with more lather in a bigger brush IME...

no pics today, but a win for the wet shaving community. My brother is staying with me at the moment and his idea of shaving is throwing some hand soap on his face in the shower, and then running over with a three blade brick. So, after some convincing he allowed me to whip up some awesome APR (Skye Fall) lather and then I showed him how to use a straight razor. He managed to get his cheeks done and parts of his chin, before he finished up with one of my Charcoal Goods razors (lvl 2) with a new feather. To cut a long story short, he woke up the next morning asking if he could have another 'real shave'. Happy Days.

The blade you found is probably an industial blade not made to shave, probably 2 facet instead of 3 and not coated. I think the Gem PTFE blades are pretty good. The only real alternatives are carbon steel: Gem Blue Star, PAL and Treet. I find the Treet to be pretty good (I used one this evening) but they are expensive to ship from the US and you really rust quickly, you must dry them after use and even then never store them in the bathroom. I'm not conviced thet are worth the trouble or expense but if you want to try some to find out PM me and I'll send you a couple.

My first ever shave with a vintage blade (Gillette Super Stainless) thanks to @eggbert. One of my most enjoyable shaves in a long time - sharp as a Feather, but much more forgiving. After 3 passes (including ATG buffing) no blood visible, and just a little irritation picked up by the Alum on the neck. I thought I was going to be a Feather man for life, but I think a new rabbit hole is opening up....

first use of both soap and splash. The soap was pretty good, and the splash has a really nice scent that I feel It reminds me of something familiar. The scent has good fixation on me, and the menthol is just below the threshold that makes me cry xD
