Something Hairy

Which donor brush did that come from ? I'm convinced and will make one, just thinking about which knots I'm going to try. Am looking at Vigshaving, DScosmetics as they are cheaper but then there's shaveforge and also TGN and maybe a stack more I don't know of. VIGShaving seem to have some horse knots too, which I'm also keen on trying.

I've been looking at TGN big boar knot for a while but they've always been out of stock. Don't know if they're actually going to get them back in.
The Omega 10048 are cheap enough from VSHOD, maybe just buy those and use the knot out of those?

I was hoping to avoid destroying a brush someone had put the time into making but that price does make it quite tempting. That's about as cheap as you can buy the cheapest knot posted, Have you used that brush (or it's knot) yourself? Thoughts?

My mistake, I thought when I saw the plastic ring around the boar knot it was from a pre-made brush. I take it you have that one mounted and in use? What's your thoughts on that knot?

DSCosmetics has a a 28 & 30mm but even though they too are out of stock. They have a 26mm but again it costs as much as the Omega brush. The Shaveforge has a 28mm that gets good reviews also and seems are in stock, they also have some horse knots so I may try some of theirs soon as I get the chance. Whipped Dog has a 30mm also but is the most expensive of the lot.

I've got the 10083 which is shorter loft than the 10048. I would've ordered the 10048 from VSHOD this morning but they are out of stock. I'm guessing with the longer loft the 10048 would be more like the Omega Italian Boar or the Zenith Boar I have, both of which I really like. The 10083 is a great work horse, whereas the Italian and Zenith are a bit more luxurious.

I like the idea of the extra loft and was thinking about ordering 10048 this afternoon, guess maybe not now if they have no stock. I'll keep an eye out and I may still sometime soon try some of the knots from Shaveforge, boar knots are certainly more affordable than badger. On a different note I christened my TGN HMW this morning, was going to give the finish another week before use but I had to try it. Quite nice, better than I was expecting but if I'm honest maybe a little too soft for my ideal liking. I prefer the feel of a good 2 band, so I may really enjoy a good boar once broken in.

The TGN HMW is better than I had first thought, it didn't seem as dense as some other knots but I was wrong. I think the hairs are just finer as once you wet and splay it and shake it dry the spread or "fan" if you like is really something. I set it with a 55mm loft. It seemed to eat up a bit more soap for a lather though than I'm used to but still was quite nice in actual use but I may have been expecting more than I should as you read a lot of hype on HMW knots about the net.

Had it for two or three years now, it is full and firm.

Sounds great, I'm wondering now if the cheap boar my Son had and threw away was in fact boar as someone today suggested it may have been a bad quality plastic joby. No idea why you would make a synth that hard, a fagot of sticks would have been softer. But I'm now sold on trying at least a couple of "decent" boar knots and getting them broken in before passing any judgement. I shouldn't have based my thoughts on a obviously poor example. I'm still very much a noob in regards to wet shaving.

Well I went and ordered some 28mm x 70mm boar knots, also got some others coming (excited I got some horse knots). I hope I like the boar, had read somewhere here about breaking them in quickly, 4 days or such. Will have to look that up again. Good times!

Hmmmm, dreaming about these knots I've got coming. I've got a bit of eucalypt root I've had saved for decades that was almost firewood at one point. I look at it and wonder what it may become, could it be the basis for a new boar or horse bristle brush ? Man I can't wait for these new knots to come, so hard finding nice figured timber here in S.A.

Dreaming.......

It's hard to know what's best to do with it and still do the natural wonders of this justice , if what I was told is correct it's from a 400-500+ year old grey box. Strange and funny thing with timber being a natural product, you can go through thousands of bits of wood and not one will be the same as the next. All natural timber or wood is beautiful to a person such as myself but it's not common....Or at least not for myself to come across timber with as much detail as some of this. Nature always continues to blow my mind!

My savings that one day I plan to turn into shavings, there's a bit of all sorts I've been hoarding and some of it I have no idea what it is. Different bits of gum, some osage orange, olive, camphor laurel. Will be interesting to see what I end up with to use for making my brush collection.

Thinking these 3 may be interesting

Too sore to process any of those today, but we were looking through a spot here in S.A. near us that was part of one of the recent fires happening across Australia. I saw this small bush or tree that had been burnt and thought it looked strange, how was what was above the ground less burnt that what was below, the roots. Anyways, got me thinking I might put my collection aside and with the new knots coming. Man I'm excited to get them, just saying lol. Really keen on trying a decent boar and also a horse knot, I'm keen on the idea of horse knot..

Anyways, back to my idea and I'm just thinking/talking out loud here... I noticed they auction shaving stuff here on the forum for charity, I'll have to talk with the folks that run the forum obviously but maybe I could try turning this burnt root into a shaving brush, pen or something and then if it sells the money could goto KI wildlife charity or something of the likes. Any thoughts on this, I'm still fairly new here but I used to work in wildlife rehab/rescue myself running our own rescue service till I had to give it up. I'll have a spare pure badger or maybe one of the new 28mm boar knots I'm waiting on getting/trying could go in it.

Hi @Mitcon always willing to donate to a worthwhile charity and if I get a handmade boar, badger or horse hair brush out of it will be pushing the $$ up.
I think a handmade horse hair P&C made by Mitcon would be something special :)

As I said I've not even spoke with folks that run the forum yet, but I'd be willing to donate any one of my knots I have just bought for myself or as I said I still have a spare badger. I have a couple of synths coming also and 2 different types of horse hair, so will have to wait till I get them as I have no idea of quality on them yet. Obviously I'm hoping they are all quality knots buying them for myself lol. I bought myself a 24k gold pen kit also, I think if I can get enough out of this to do both I'll be adding that also. If the burnt bush turns out no good I'll use/donate the above grey box root I just processed yesterday, but I'd hope the burnt one works out as it'd be a part of it all if you know what I mean.

I wonder who's the person or mod that I should talk to about this?

I don't know how the charity thing works here, but I like your idea.

Knowing that there were people deliberately starting fires is heartbreaking.

I liked your post but wanted to add that it's disgusting such things happen!
It was that I agree with you, not sure who to contact in regards to doing charity auction or sale but am sure they will see this thread and respond or a mod will and they will know what to do from here.
