EDC Torch Thread

...and finally for tonight, this in today's mail:

O-Light Warrior X Pro. The little fob light was a freebie. I reckon this would light up the MCG :p

2100 lumens @500 meters you could play cricket under that light
Exactly. Though good guys don't play cricket. [ducks :p]

Despite the fact that I live out in the bush, I've got by quite happily until recently with my two Eagtac D25LC2 torches which are a comfortable and light fit in a pocket while still packing a punch. However, we've had a few people get lost lately, and hunting for them needs something with more grunt. Need to be careful though, I can imagine starting a fire with this bad boy.

If you want to see something or someone 1km away then this for you https://www.ledtorchshop.com.au/microfire-patrol.html wonder how hot it would get?
An interesting toy for the specialist. The price is a bit (a lot) outside my bracket, but still thinking of the range of circumstances where you have 1km line of sight and still need a torch. The spotlights on the front of your 4wd might fill much the same slot. My Warrior X Pro is overkill for 95% of my purposes. And that gets pretty damn hot...

Well the torch online communities are probably even faster than us shaving nerds!

Maade a post asking about a flashlight my daughter can carry in her bag, so small and light, that with a touch of a button can emit a powerful enough light to disorientate somebody who may be hassling her and give her time to run. SOOOOO many replies and suggestions which I've whittled down to –

https://www.liteshop.com.au/content...al-2526-lumen-dual-switch-rechargeable-torch/ - 2,526 Lumens, 165g length 136, max bean 2 ½ mins (the one I already have - too heavy for this purpose I think)

https://www.olightstore.com.au/olight-m2r-pro-1800-lumen-rechargeable-tactical-led-torch - 1800 Lumens, Beam Intensity of 22,400cd but 179g, length 136.5mm (again, too large and heavy)

https://www.olightstore.com.au/olight-s1r-baton-ii-rechargeable-1000-lumen-led-pocket-torch? – 1000 Lumens, Beam Intensity of 5,250cd only 51g, length 63mm – really only a blinding flash for a minute before the battery runs run to lower light mode

https://www.liteshop.com.au/content/klarus-xt1c-1000-lumen-2018-tactical-edition/ - 1000 Lumens, Beam Intensity of 7,921 cd, only 74g, length 94.4mm

https://www.liteshop.com.au/content...-rechargeable-dual-switch-edc-tactical-torch/ - 1500 Lumens, Beam Intensity of 9,025cd only 105g, length 106mm – but out of stock ☹

The last one or second last seems a decent compromise on light output and size, with the second last one actually in stock, so I think we have a winner.

For the purpose you're describing, I rather doubt if a torch would be a good strategy. Your daughter should start running and screaming sooner rather than wasting her time with a torch. For use at close quarters, when running is no longer an option, I would have thought a can of pepper spray would be more effective.

Pepper spray is not legal unfortunately.

Hand in pocket or bag to come out with blinding/strobe light as starting to run and scream. Just adds that additional second or two of disorientation.

The contenders keep flooding (pun intended) in -

Legal schmegal. To put it bluntly, the law doesn't do a very good job of defending dead people.

But if that really does bother you, hair spray or WD-40 when sprayed in the eyes might be nearly as effective.

The challenge then is the willingness to use it preemptively.

To get to the point of being willing to spray you may well be too close to danger. A torch has a lower threshold and more likely to be used early

Anti perspirant deodorant is my recommendation.
The anti perspirant part is key, as it's designed to absorb moisture, moisture the eyes are emitting to try and flush the irritants from both the anti perspirant and the deodorant.

Ahh that was you? Thought the name seemed familiar.

Can confirm, TT20 & M2R Pro will be a bit big, easy to get stuck in a bag.

Olight S1R II is absolutely tiny and gets hot after a few seconds on turbo andwon't last long.

Olight S2R II is a better size with almost the same output, but bigger battery and form factor, so it's better to hold, but only has side thumb switch.

Olight Baton Pro is slightly bigger than the S2R II and is a floodier torch, but twice the output up close and a great all rounder. Again, side switch only.

Klarus E2 is damn nice and I want one for my EDC, but have never used one sadly.

Warrior Mini would be the best bet of the Olights, if you can find one. Tail Switch and small form factor, perfect

This is the S1R II compared to the S2R II and the Lumintop FW4A (Which has an involved UI and not a good pick for tactical defence)

Yes, that was me - in two FB groups and BOTH went off in responding!

There really are a ton of good options!

There is the huge range of torches on Banggood.com they sell stuff we can't get and most of the mare pretty decent genuine gear, like Astrolux or the Wuben C3 P9
Tell me, what does the torch geek/nerd/enthusiast/whatever actually do with all those torches? I understand having one to hold in your hand, and a couple of spares, but what do you do with those vast collections? Living out in the bush, I use a torch fairly frequently, but i don't stand outside all night lighting up the darkness.

You should see the pics of the collections ...
