Hi guys,

I need your help to find a aftershave balm for my father, he asked if I could find an alcohol free aftershave balm with a floral scent (Asking me to find a shaving product...I'm containing my joy!). My father use Proraso Green & Proraso Red sooo is there a floral balm that would pair well with peppermint or sandalwood?

thanks for your help.

I'm quite partial to Geo F Trumpers Coral Skinfood. It's a rose scent. Not sure how it would go with peppermint or sandalwood. They also make a sandalwood version which I like.

Ingredients: Alcohol Denatured
Dunno if it's floral or not but Nivea ASB?
I find it amusing that a product can advertise as being alcohol free, yet it contains PhenoxyETHANOL...that's Australian consumer law for you ...

I'm not a scent expert, so I will only tell you products I know, have used and can recommend.

B&M Kyovu - I have only used the original, like the scent and the witch Hazel potency. It's a splash, but viscous so has a bit of a balm feel

Thayers Alcohol free Witch Hazel: best bang for your buck IMO witch hazel wise, I like the scent free version. But a pure splash

Stirling Witch hazel: great scent choices, but I find the witch Hazel a bit weak in the splash - still haven't got around trying the balm...and the only actual alcohol free balm I know...can try for you tomorrow and let you know, if you are interested

Well, witch hazel extract is full of alcohol groups too, as are the essential oils in the B&M.

In fact, for that matter, our bodies are riddled with alcohol groups. They're impossible to avoid.

Interesting - have to read up on that. I mean the witch hazel extraction part of course. But still, you could extract with alcohol and distill it off - not sure if they do, just saying how I would make it...

No, the witch hazel extract itself is a tannin. Tannins are macromolecules with thousands upon thousands of alcohol groups. That's why it works the way it does.

Plenty of After-shave balms to choose from...and a floral scent as well.

First up, I'd highly recommend The Stray Whisker Aftershave balm - BUT! - it's still not available yet. Perhaps later this month? It's a top ASB so I'd look out for it once it's available.

Others I've used and recommend that ARE available:

Shaver Heaven balms! You can easily pick up a floral scent in these. Excellent value. You can't go wrong. Highly recommended.

L'Occitane's ASBs. I have Bavx (which is woody), but they also have a floral (lavender) and another one to choose from. You pick them up in store. More exy.

Razorock After-shave Wax. I have the original (which is a woody floral). Very exy.

Natio for Men have an ASB but it's got citrus notes.

Sukin Facial Moisturiser is also good. It's Aussie and uses natural ingredients.

Not directed at anyone in particular....

IMO anything is better than Nivea. I refuse to recommend it. It's a cheap multi-national conglomerate made product that is full of chemicals. Why on earth do people recommend that goop when there is SO MUCH better AUSSIE made products!!?!?

So tell us what you really think mate ...

I bet that all alcohol groups together in a witch hazel extract are not as drying on the skin, than the 1 alcohol group on a small molecule like ethanol...

Why has nobody yet recommended MYRSOL EMULSION!
None better in the teetotaller department of post-shave facial tonics.

Well I always thought it was alcohol-free but you weird chemist types have me wondering now.

Ingredients: Aqua, stearic acid, triethanolamine, lanolin, glycerin, sodium, methylparaben, menthol and parfum.

triethanolamine? is that an 'alcohol group'?
"Triethanolamine, often abbreviated as TEA, is a viscous organic compound that is both a tertiary amine and a triol. A triol is a molecule with three alcohol groups." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triethanolamine)

Bugger you lot, can't I just enjoy something!?!

Still the best balm there is, bar none!

^ THIS.

Unless someone is clearly irritated by alcohol, I can't see what the problem is. Alcohol has been a staple in aftershave for decades. It's the cosmetic industry that's given it a bad name in the name of flogging overpriced man cream to idiots who've been using man perfume as aftershave and wondering why they sear their face and it dries up like a prune.

Alcohol is not bad for your skin in balms and Proper aftershaves. It's good, it heals.

Alright someone take a screenshot. @Drubbing and I agree about something....

Has a local supply of Myrsol opened up yet?
Yes. The Stray Whisker. But not the full range (at least not yet - shipments take a while). You could ask about samplers as well. I think that was in the works...

Not sure anyone could compete with @Gifts&Care.com prices TBH mate. I just keep buying the plastic bottle and filling up my glass.
I intend using this stuff until, and so, I end up looking like Miquel Ricou Sole its creator and biggest fan - still looked good into his 90s

Please tell me you mean moustache and all?

Mate the whole package!

Wow. He's kept his natural hair colour too. Lush.
He did keep his hair well didn't he...opting for the enhancement rather than resigned removal like myself.
Senor Sole passed away last year unfortunately but was a character until the end by all accounts.
