I'm honing a blade for a friends son and came across this. Doesn't look like impact/chip. Anybody seen something like this before?
At least it seems to be isolated damage which will hone out but never seen this before.

My initial thought is rust. Maybe a bit of surface damage that was enough to cause a bit of corrosion to start
I wonder whether the blade has been exposed to something corrosive or whether it is just bad steel. There was other micro pitting along the bevel that looked similar to what I've seen on older vintage blades not a more modern blade like this. The Focus has a plastic coffin so I'm thinking 1970's but am only guessing.

Geez Goose, that's a nice looking hone and should shave FAR better than the first shot. All I can do is shake my head and wonder how he didn't bleed out.....:borg:

It's a corrosive substance attacking the steel. A heavy acid or base would be the obvious answer here but you may see it with other substances like high-chlorine cleaners mixed with other chemicals. Do they use something like CLR bathroom cleaner?

Thanks Monsta_AU, he did say it was dragging a bit :)
I don't know the guy that owns it. I'm doing it as a favour for the guys father so I don't know the history of the blade at all. I think you're right, it's come into contact with something, that rings true with the micro pitting along the bevel as well.
I seem to be getting the interesting ones at the moment. My nephew gave me two Dovo's to hone. One he dropped and chipped the bevel (Bismark), the other is a new Dovo that came with a slight protrusion on the heel which I've yet to hone out. So much for shave ready. I was not impressed with the edge of either of the Dovo's when they were new. They hone nicely though.

Post Script: Wasn't 100% happy with minor pitting along bevel so I rehoned and now pretty happy how it came up. Big hole all but gone now, and looks like it's not that deep and will hone out OK.
Disinfect and it's back to the owner.
