Blade Runner 2049 review

Just thought I'd throw this quick review out there for anyone who's sitting on the fence. Go see it. :)
Speaking as someone who is very cynical about modern movies I came out of the theatre feeling very happy I chose to see this movie on the big screen. While the story itself did not 'need' to be told I was very happy with it, it added on nicely to the original without taking anything away from the first film. The visuals we fantastic and the world was well realised. No spoilers, but do not judge this movie by the trailers it is not a mindless Hollywood shoot 'em up action film made for the mindless masses with no attention span. Running time came in at just under 3 hours but I was never bored or fidgity. The narrative was well paced and held my interest for the whole time. In fact the Mrs and our son enjoyed it as well and it's rare that we all agree on a movies worth. Even Ryan Gosling did a good job and I usually find him a bit annoying for some reason.
 
The original is my all time favourite film, a seminal piece of Science Fiction and film making. I am really looking forward to seeing 2049!!

I had a mate who worked at the theatre back when the original came out and if there were spare seats he used to sneak me in. I have since bought the movie on VHS, DVD and Blu Ray. :) I was VERY skeptical about the sequel as I am with most movies these days but as I said, speaking as a big fan of the original I was VERY happy with the sequel. I was also concerned about not having Vangelis on board but Zimmer and his partner did an adequate job of the music and it fit the movie well.
 
Tough to follow up a true classic, sometimes it can spoil the legacy. I think they might be hedging their bets by getting Ford on board.

I remember when it came out and the reaction was indifferent from critics and tickets. But it grew on people quickly. Once they recognised the traditional film noir elements (although the directors cut omitted he voice-over, which is a noir trope), coupled with SF dystopia themes, the soundtrack and aesthetics, it was realised it was both traditional and modern; clever film making with a great story to tell. It was ahead of its time and still works as a great and relevant film today.

I'm a huge fan of the original novel and movie, as well as being a bit of a Ryan Gosling fan.

To whoever might be interested by the Tech-Noir genre, I recommend you watch Dark City with Rufus Sewell. Like Blade Runner, it was underappreciated at the time of its release and it aged like a fine wine.

Kind of. It was scripted and there were a few drafts, but wasn't as Scott wrote it. Hauer used the essence of it, but winged it on the day. Scott was more than happy to credit it to him though.
 
She was (and is) a stunner for sure.
