Seygus Zeppelin V2 - 0.7 + 0.7 Plate (Spain)

After my review earlier this year where I found the Zeppelin to be far too mild, I contacted Seygus to let them know my thoughts about the level of efficiency and recommended a more efficient plate like 0.9 or 1.00mm. Their reply was that ‘the baseplate gap of 0.7mm is very efficient but 0.9mm is somehow harsh and a peril for the sensitive skin’. After some negotiations Seygus advised they had a 0.7 + 0.7 head, scalloped on one side and flat on the other and a 0.7 + 0.9 head so I ordered the 0.7 + 0.9 head; Seygus in their generosity included a 0.7 + 0.7 plate as a bonus. Somewhere along the line the wires got crossed and I ended up receiving a 0.5 + 0.7mm plate in a completely new V2 version of the Zeppelin. I would love to have been a fly on the wall as the German bloke who was expecting his fancy Zeppelin V2 opened his package to find a cap and two plates and not the beauty he was expecting. Anyhow, it was lust at first sight, instant attraction and I knew I wanted the V2 as soon as I sighted it. This time the efficiency is engraved onto the plate so I know exactly what plate I have. I now suspect that the first Seygus Zeppelin razor I tested was the original Zeppelin V1 using 0.3/ 0.5mm plate and that is why the razor was so mild so I’ll find out soon.

As I said it was love at the first sight of the Zeppelin V2 so I contacted Seygus and said I would like to purchase the Zeppelin V2. Seygus agreed and advised that they had a 0.7 + 0.7mm plate and they would machine me a 0.9 + 0.9 plate; just what I wanted in the first place; no dual efficiency plate if I can avoid it. Seygus were really great to deal with; they fixed the misunderstanding, cracked a joke and got on with business. What a looker that V2 handle is with its SS’s engraved around the main holding area and then beautifully polished. Also, the polish job on the head has been very well executed and is superior to the V1 finish and I thought that was good. When the 0.7 + 0.7 plate arrived it was flat on both sides, I would not have minded had one side been scalloped but I certainly do like what I have. Zeppelin’s innovative cupped designed cap and matching plate are again employed so I’m looking forward to some positive results this time.

First shave with the V2 and the 0.7 + 0.7 plate gets the nod. I can now positively identify that my original Zeppelin is fitted with a 0.3 + 0.5 plate and not the 0.5 + 0.7 plate I deduced that I had. This 0.7 + 0.7 plate is what Seygus should have been fitted when they released the Zeppelin in the first place; it transforms the razor to an efficiency level somewhere around the Karve CB #C plate level. Smoothness with efficiency is what the Zeppelin now delivers; it is simply a brilliant razor with this plate fitted. With the innovative head design, precision machining and outstanding presentation of the finished product, Seygus have now backed the whole experience up with an exceptional shave; this has been my reward for perseverance.

@Errol awesome work as usual. Many positives on this one. As soon as you mentioned this razor I did some research and the results matched your findings today.
I was so close to pulling the trigger but then the dreaded blade tab issue came up.
The design is beautiful, the blade smile torques the blade to reduce chatter. They even tapered the top and bottom cap to reduce the head width while keeping the blade tabs covered.... or did they?
Can you confirm this please (pic would be great)?
I'm spoilt as a RS-10 user and these little things now matter to me a lot more than they ever have.

Great review.

I think my question would be is it worth selling the rs 10 for this?

@Rami would I sell the RS-10 likely not. As the design of the RS-10 is superior. The newly released razors which I've never used and have only seen & read about online IMHO none have got the design right as yet

Currently Haircut & Shave (H&S) #75 razor looks even better and promising with their neutral blade exposure. But again fail with the blade tab design and have not tapered the head ends to reduce the head width and weight. Though the new Stainless steel version does reduce the weight only, not the tapered head.
Smart Helix's Apollo does the same tab design as H&S but did the silly lather channel holes that really just don't work; as they don't allow easy flow and then are a bastard to clean.
Paradigm Javelin, same again. No tapered head again.
Carbon Shaving Co. Cx-316L again, blade tab hangs out. So you nick your nose when in a rush.
Well don't be in a rush then, says one

These are all premium razors with many prototypes phases and I would expect modern design tweaks to be included.

I'll hang out for the Seygus Zeppelin V3 as this looks the most promising so far

Thanks again @Errol and yes I threw my opinion in there.

Blade tabs being covered is something I have no preference for either way and that is why it rarely rates a mention in my reviews. Of late I've been giving the width of the razor head and I've just measured a blade at 42.65 mm so working out positive or negative blade tab exposure is a simple mathematical calculation. I will however try to remember to include blade tab data in future reviews. @RustyBlade , getting back to your question. The Zeppelin V2 has no blade tab exposed.

@Errol thank you for the clarification on the blade tabs on the Zeppelin 2. Now I'm very interested.
You are right, it is a stunning looking razor (y)

Actually I was hoping for a politically correct award. I'm never going to suggest to you that you should pass on the RS-10.

The Zeppelin V2 is on par with the RS-10 and it would give you another shaving option.
Charcoal vs Zeppelin?

@Errol you certainly have some nice razors. As you know, I've been looking for a razor to team up with my Timeless.
I'm torn between the Rex Ambassador, and now the Seygus.
I see that Seygus also do a rather nice looking brass razor too (the Extrem).

Price wise all much the same.
I'm tending towards the Rex, but the Zeppelin model could sway me over to Seygus razors.
Your thoughts on that?
I want smooth and close (I could wait for the auction and that CG razor of course!).
I could also just buy another Timeless with scalloped cap and .95 base, plus a dimpled handle but I'd like to explore other razors too.

Hey @Blackie every razor that you mentioned is top shelf and you’re going to get a good shave from each of them. Your heart is going to rule here. I think if you’re leaning towards the Rex that is the way you should go. I liked the Rex when I reviewed it but mine is the first generation and there have been upgrades. One could think that upgrades would improve the breed.

Yes @Errol I think the Rex will win. There have been a couple of upgrades to the design too. Apparently Rex Supply Co/. will allow 'Returns', but reckon they don't get many back. Anything returned before serial N3 they just scrap. Latest versions are O1 and currently making O2 if I remember right.
At the moment I'm still waiting for the USPS plonkers to actually find my lovely 48 - 50 Aristocrat that I bought many weeks ago.
It's tracked OK through to 23 June, and nothing since then!
I can get my money back, but I would much prefer to have the razor.
OK, I admit it...I really like nice vintage razors too.

Seygus Zeppelin V2 - 0.9 + 0.9 Plate (Spain)

Design and manufacture of Seygus Razors is a hobby for a machining company from Madrid in Spain, therefore their razor manufacture is part time and slotted in around their main machine shop operations. From such a small operation comes some very inspirational shave pieces and I admire the great job they do. Seygus have been excellent to deal with and have gone out of their way to assist me. In turn I will forward them the link to today’s review, as I did last week. This razor is the same razor as used last week but fitted with the 0.9 + 0.9 plate however this time one side of the plate is flat and the other scalloped and I still love the fact that this is not a dual efficiency plate.

Seygus warned me ‘0.9mm is somehow harsh and a peril for the sensitive skin’. Let’s see how harsh and perilous this 0.9 + 0.9 plate is on my precious and sensitive skin. Immediately it is noted that there has been a step up in efficiency level with the 0.9 +0.9 plate fitted but it has only jumped to about Karve CB #D plate level. One would think all would be good but on an upstroke on the left side of the neck the Zeppelin took a nick out. Now I do occasionally get the odd weeper but never before on the side of the neck. Second pass, now with a somewhat pink lather, no more trouble but I was being very cautious. Second shave and out of nowhere I’ve got another chunk out of the right side of the neck and then a cut on the chin (it’s not unusual for me to get a cut on the chin though). There seems to be no predicting when this razor is going to attack; I just don’t get it. I pussy footed my way through the third and forth shaves with no more cuts but they were not pleasant shaves, certainly close but I just don’t trust this set up. This tendency to bite has got to be something to do with the cupped blade and the amount of blade exposed; any blade clamped flat with Karve CB #D efficiency is predictable and just doesn’t bite like the Zeppelin V2 has done with the 0.9 + 0.9 plate fitted. Use with caution; as for me I’ll rely on the security of the 0.7 + 0.7 plate.

@Errol you have me sold on Seygus. However not on the 0.9 plate and it confirms to me that the curvature of the blade design has limits. So an aggressive Timor blade which is wider than most could have a dramatic impact on shave quality by increasing a positive blade exposure. Blade choice for this style of razor maybe critical for a bitey or smooth shaver.
