Looking to start DE

Hi all!

I'm looking to enter the world of DE. My skin is a bit sensitive, especially on the upper lip. It often reacts to the cartridges (I currently use Gillette Mach 5), and I also get a bit of razor burn on my cheeks sometimes. My skin is also quite dry, so that isn't helping either.

I prefer a closer shave, but regular cartridge use isn't doing me any favours so I mainly stick to my electric shaver. I can grow a decent beard, but with cartridges I really only have to shave every 2-3 days before the stubble gets thick enough to justify going through the ordeal again, hence the regular shaver use which is usually every day.

But now my shaver is getting old, so I was looking at either getting a new one or a replacing the head as the blades are getting dull. I'm obviously not enjoying the cartridges, even though I prefer the closer shave. I think I can do better, so a few days of internetting showed me the world of DE. A few sites I've been to pointed me here, so here I am! I've seen the term rabbit hole thrown around a lot, and I can certainly see why!

From what I've been reading, the Merkur 34C or the Rockwell 6S look like good starters. I'm not the kind of person that keeps buying new items if I'm happy with what I already have, so something decent to start with would be great, without breaking the bank.

I've seen starter kits like this https://www.beardandblade.com.au/co...ard-blade-essentials-safety-razor-shaving-kit which might be a good start. I'll also need something post-shave so my skin doesn't dry out.

I think I'm leaning towards the 6S for the plate options, instead of the 34C starter pack.

What are your thoughts? I'm suffering from a bit of information overload, even after just a few days of research.

- 6S or 34C? Or something else?
- A good soap? Is Proraso good, should I look at other options? Sandalwood options pop up a lot.
- A decent synthetic brush seems the go; no pre-soak or wearing in required. Correct me if I'm wrong?
- What post-shave options would be good? I think I read that the alcohol in aftershaves isn't too good for your skin? I think a moisturiser or balm would be better for my dry skin. I currently use one of the Proraso aftershave balms. It's ok but not great.
- A mix of blades from vshod. There are lots of posts mentioning about 5-10 good options, so I'll grab a mix of those.
- Would I need an astringent?

Thanks for your help. Looking forward to a better shave!

Whilst I love and use the 34c,I would recommend the 6s as you have the options to evolve into.
Alcohol free Thayers is a great aftershave,
Proraso blue cream,or Speick cream are both good starts,as is Taylors Jermyn St.
Plissoft synthetic brush is popular
The blade packs are a very good idea, but stay away from Feather for the time being.

Welcome to P&C @Chappo - great to have you here (y)

Changing from canned goo to real lather is IMO the most important part of your shave and will show the most improvement!

So, yes a decent synthetic to make great lather - tick

Decent soap - very important and Proraso is a good starting point - but don't get the red (Sandalwood) - there is no real Sandalwood in there probably...get either the green (has menthol) or the white (I prefer, because no menthol) - once you get going with that and are getting decent lathers look into an upgrade - maybe something artisan with not bad stuff in it...

Razor - 6s - yes will keep you happy and is made out of Stainless Steel, so will last for a VERY long time - tick

Get a blade sampler with a 5 pack of each blade (~30-50 in total) - so you can come back to one, once you are more experienced

Alumn block - maybe from your local Indian store

Try Witch Hazel (Thayers) for post shave

Map your beard while you are waiting for everything to arrove - very important - enjoy the journey (y)

Welcome @Chappo. You've come to the right place! IMHO it depends on your overall budget as the options you give would all work.
I'm certain more experienced members will be able to offer you sensible advice but if I had my time again I would start with the 6S as its the safest option as you adjust to technique, experiment with different blades and its SS so should last years.
I started out with Proraso and quickly moved on to one of the local soaps and in Squadron Soaps or APR you're certain to get fantastic shaves on par with the more fancy offerings from overseas. Do your research as some soaps contain ingredients that may cause you issues, such as lanolin, Fragrance Oils as opposed to Essential Oils. The ones I suggested are safe and come with high regards but don't think you need to spend top dollar as you can get most of the popular brands locally - see Artisan Arcade for the popular Stirling range from the US which are good value, with heaps of different scents ;) @Ozwhisker is your man.
A synthetic brush is a must when starting and the quality/price has come a long way since I first started so try a Yaqi, RazoRock and once you're settled look at trying a badger/boar - expect to pay more but its worth it!
Plenty of recommendations for blades so don't feel the need to buy a sample pack as it will contain less popular brands of blades. Checkout the threads for the better/affordable options. @SpeedyPC can advise you as he's very knowledgable/helpful (y)
I'm more of a balm person myself and enjoy Proraso but its quite pricey. I highly recommend the After balm from The Stray Whisker as it leaves my skin hydrated and contains witch hazel, aloe and Vit E. Smells nice too! You can also get an Alum block from them as you'll more than not cut yourself adjusting from cart shaving but be patient as the effort and results are well worth it! We're more than happy to answer any questions and here's to many Happy shaves! :)

I can't agree more with this as your less likely to end up with razor burn/irritation.

G'day @Chappo welcome to P&C

What's wrong with red proraso?

Hi all!

- 6S or 34C? Or something else?
- A good soap? Is Proraso good, should I look at other options? Sandalwood options pop up a lot.
- A decent synthetic brush seems the go; no pre-soak or wearing in required. Correct me if I'm wrong?

I think you got pretty solid kit going on.

6c/s is definitely a great razor, plenty of people happy enough with it to keep forever.

BTW you might want to get styptic pencil - any pharmacy has one. They (pharmacy) also sell 'crystall deodorant' which really is an alum block, just make sure it's not scented.

Vshod is definitely a great place for blades (and everything else), despite my best efforts to strip them from any and all stock. :)

What's wrong with red proraso?
I've yet to try the Red but enjoy the Green & White but in all honesty Proraso is quiet pricey.

Thanks so much for the speedy responses!

So I'm getting the 6S razor and Thayers witch hazel toner from B&B, a shaving soap sample pack from Artisan Arcade, and a Plissoft brush and blade collection from vshod. I think that should cover me for a while
