My coffee machine

I must be a coffee heretic...I bought this.

Once I set the beans at the grind I liked, I then made up my own stainless steam wand ('cos I could, and 'cos the Gaggia one is a tad woeful...no 'micro-foam'!).
It now makes a nice easy to repeat brew.
I do have a couple of plunger jobs, and a Moka...but the Gaggia is just so quick to get a nice brew.

About as old as I am

I cant function without good coffee, I've been roasting my own beans for 8 years.

I'm curious to see how many people here that drink coffee would have a worse day without it.
I know some of my coffee loving friends will say they can't function without it but I've always wondered if they've said it in an exaggerated joking manner or not.
I personally got myself into coffee because I was given a bag of beans haha but found that after a few months I could still easily go without it and some days I'd even feel more drowsy after the coffee?!

So my question is, would you actually not be able to function without good (or any) coffee? What would that kind of day feel like for you? Just to make my intentions clear, I'm not trying to be insulting or attacking, genuinely very curious :)

My name is @rhodes96, and I am a coffee addict.

I love my coffee, but I don't think I have an addiction/craving issue. I can (and often do) go several days without coffee. Nowadays I find I have to get my coffee hit earlier in the day if I want undisturbed sleep though...

I love coffee...I desire coffee...I want coffee...in fact, I've just finished a nice cup about 10 minutes ago.
I usually have my last coffee about an hour before going to bed.
No problems with going to sleep.
When I was doing the long haul truck driving I did take caffeine pills to keep the eyes open (you do get a tad tired after 12-13 hours behind the wheel).
Next morning it would be another 2.30am - 3am start so a coffee first thing (that was my 'breakfast') and I was out to the truck and on the way again.
Maybe I'm a caffeine junky now?
I would have problems functioning throughout the day with no coffee.
Did I mention that I actually do like coffee? Prefer a nice dark roasted bean.

Without coffee, headache is certain.
Coffee before / with breakfast, and another with lunch. No more until next breakfast (don't want to develop a coffee addiction).
But if those times are missed, the guaranteed headache will remind me I missed a coffee.
Maybe a small addiction is already in place?:confused:

They’re withdrawal headaches- I know them too well. They pass after a week or so of cold turkey for me.

I am cursed with a love of coffee but also disturbed sleep if I have it at any time of day. I just process caffeine really poorly. There are some good decaf options for flavour but they generally lack the oomph of the leaded stuff that I’m looking for. And espressos don’t do it for me anymore either - I need something longer.

So these days I actually reach most for instant decaf because it’s easy to make a longer and stronger coffee flavour by just adding more. Only first thing in the morning or it still disturbs my sleep - I’m sure caffeine isn’t the only thing in coffee that causes the problem as tea doesn’t effect me at all. Management still uses the automatic machine as she likes her decaf that way.

Normally day in the office is a double shot cappuccino on the way to work (say 7am) and a morning same again then that is usually it.

On the road (flying) or meetings I might have more. At a recent conference when there was no decent coffee I had my first at 1:30 - so made it a triple shot flat white.

Usual progression is -
  • before late morning: double shot small cappuccino
  • late morning - early afternoon: double shot small flat white
  • late afternoon - early evening: double shot macchiato
  • late evening: doppio

So on a full day with meetings and a dinner in the evening I might have five - six coffees, all double shots. That is not common though.

Sleep not a problem and a day without coffee is better than a day of bad coffee!
