Gentlefolk,

Chasing some ideas for a pre shave, I have been using Proraso White, and enjoy he light menthol hit it offers.

But I want to broaden my horizons and try something else. I had thought of Razorock pre barba but beard and blade it out of stock. And @Anthony hasn't release one yet....

So balm, gel or splash, light menthol and mildly scented to go with any and all soaps.. Preferably available localy as I have like 2 shaves (1 weekish) left in my Proraso.

@vanNek I may have to look into making one. I know that The Stray Whisker have a Pre Shave soap made by La Toja called Mango. It's supposed to be quite good as preshave soap. I sometimes use GFT skin food as a preshave or Proraso Pre/Post cream.

I am currently using this soap (Magno). It has a strong scent that is quite pleasing, and leaves some slickness to my face.

A pre-shave can achieve several things:
A) a clean face to avoid any potential infections with nicks
B) Softening the whiskers to help them be cut more effectively
C) Leaving soap residue for added slickness

Some people use an oil or lotion as a pre-shave.
Myrsol Emulsion or Myrsol Antesol is a common pre-shave lotion (being used by @silver and @TomG amongst others).

Others like myself and @alfredus use a high glycerine based soap (sometimes it is Occams Pre-shave or even a Col Conk soap).

In summer I use Proraso Green Pre & Post shave which has a decent whack of menthol. I believe that there is now the Proraso Red which is also available as a Pre & Post Shave.

To apply I wet my face and then rub the soap on my whiskers. I then lather with my hands (or you can use a shaving brush like @bald as) and apply a hot towel. This makes sure my whiskers are very soft and well hydrated.

Plenty of options are available for pre-shaves. [emoji106]

Can any chime in about the Myrosl, i see it has menthol. But how much? Proaso green or proaso white menthol?

I was thinking a occams or similar but don't have a spot for it dry after use. So it'll be a balm or oil for now.

I use both Occam's and La Toja pre shave soap with the Occam's offering a little more glycerine and slickness. Both are good and very cheap.

I've used both Musgo Real and La Toja pre-shave soap as mentioned above. They both work well for me.
I find I get improved results if I work the soap against the grain of my whiskers in the various areas of my mug.
Does it really make a difference? My feel is that I get a slight improvement in shave quality, but I can fully understand others who find no real benefit.
The other way I look at it is that I am giving my face a really good clean with a quality product, which can't be bad.
