It really depends what you're seeking.
Some here may actually have what you're seeking :)

I'm looking for vintage straight razors that I can practice bringing back to life. But I'm not looking to spend a mint buying it when I still need to restore it.

I haven't found anything, other than put in a local filter on ebay searches. The stuff in the markets and what not is very little and not in very good condition.

Another option is asking around here. A few members would have blades they haven't gotten fixed up yet.

Ditto what has been said.

Vintage straights I've seen in stores are usually overpriced - they are thought to be old and thus collectible without people having any knowledge about the quality of the blades. There was an antique store in the Southern Highlands which had 3-4 plastic tubs of straights in varying conditions but it closed down - I think the eyes were picked out of them before they shut though. Gumtree does have some occasionally too.

Of course you could always grab this lot - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VINTAGE-...-COLLECTION-GREAT-FOR-COLLECTOR-/322433318618

It has been around for forever so you can always come back for it - nobody is going to pay that! ;)

Japan is a good source for some excellent steel at decent prices.

Other than eBay and yahoo auctions where can one look?

I'm just starting out in reconditioning them. Learning as I go. Looks like fun.

I don't want to spend any more then about $20-40 each as I need to put time into restoration.

But I'm looking for somewhere that has a steady supply of them. Like an eBay or something.

eBay is so over priced. Guy in Melb wants a mint for a razor that requires lots of attention. He was a bit rude when I made an offer let's say......

If you ever get out into the sticks...

Antique shops often have a few scattered around.

Last year I wandered into the one in Dunedoo, and walked out with the Puma 21 that is currently in my rotation.

Just last week I was stopped at Renmark, on my way home from Perth. I sauntered into Cammie's Antiques in Paringa (over the river). There was a box with at least 10 blades, 5 of which were possibly salvageable.

I walked out with a white-scaled Bengall with the text "Made for Lawrence's Broken Hill" on it.

And that is the story of my Sabbatical Fail for this year!

Another thing to try is, if you travel out west a bit, are barbers shops on small country towns.
A mate Dad runs one and they get most of the old blades from when the grandkids are cleaning out the old homestead after Grandad passes on.
Some of them have drawers full

That's a good idea. Due to the danger of sharing blood-borne infections, barbers can no longer use them in-store, either.

Shavettes all the way now. What is a loss for the barber's tradition, is a possible gain for the collector.

It is actually the strop which is the problem, apparently, for health departments not the razor itself because it lives in disinfectant between customers.

Ha, I did not know that.

I always thought it was the blade itself. Live and learn.

So, why haven't you looted the drawer, then? :cautious:
