2017 sabattical

@Snooze that's just it mate. When I started last year, i ended up with some of the very best Japanese straights there is (iwasaki) and the shaves improved but still pretty bad. Next I went and got some of the most it soaps and the shave did not improve much. Next I tried some of the nicest brushes and the shave got more enjoyable but not better.

So this leads me to conclude that products will not make a difference hence I need to work on technique hence sabbatical

I opted out of the sabbatical and have spent less already this year and think about buying stuff less as well :joyful:.

Seems being on sabbatical makes you think about buying stuff more than if you were just going about your business normally.

Not only that but you miss out on awesome stuff like cheap Paladin's and ATT razors.
You mean you have spent less in the 2 1/2 months of 2017 than in total in 2017 :D :D :D

Nearly 2 months now & I haven't even made a small dent in my stash. You blokes that have been in the game for years can probably go to eternity & back and still not use your stash.

Ummm, yeah, so?

I'm not sure of your point?

I barely made a dent on one puck and I have been using for weeks.

Come on guys, it is not that hard: just load a bit more and always use your largest and densest brush...

Ok, I admit I bought only 1 puck in the past 15 months and am very slowly getting to the point of putting together my next 2 orders (probably in a month or so)

My own unilateral decision. Authority to do so comes with the keys to this joint, plus I need to keep myself amused (see Filo's growing banner list). Happy to remove it if he really wants it off.

Anyone else in?

Rules are simple - you cannot buy anything however products we release here as a Forum developed product then I shall turn a blind eye.

If you literally run out of stuff to shave with (or breakages/failures/lost/stolen), here's what you are allowed to buy:
  • DE Blades: Anything locally available - I am thinking the Brazilian Wilkinsons from Coles is fine.
  • Soap/Cream: Proraso Green from you local barbershop or Shaver Shop only.
  • Brush: If all your brushes die, something like one of the Synths from The Body Shop.
  • Post: Alum from your local Indian supermarket/store.

Is apr soaps a forum based product?

Is apr soaps a forum based product?

It is in no way a forum based product, it is a product that I have developed with the involvement of the community and with the license of Monsta have been granted permission to offer it to members for sale through the artisan forum.

If we release a specific forum soap, that would be excluded.

Oh come on, that's no fun - just think of all the lovely new banners you could make for people :p

@todras, apr came about soon after I joined this place, and to be honest, you have done such a good jobs walking us through the development process that The lines have blurred a bit. I have just realised that this may belittle the amount of effort that went into this, and for that I wholeheartedly apologise. :)

Nah man that's more than understandable, don't sweat it at all. I am one of the least likely people on an internet forum (and on P&C) to ever take offense at anything ;)

APR started as a result of a DIY thread I initiated in the aftershave forum after spending months and months reading about perfume from a historical perspective. I then took the next step and wondered how I could apply my love of reading about perfume and it's history to the practical aspects of making aftershave. In this sense, it did blur with P&C as we have 2 specialist chemists here who found my ramblings and learning interesting and we also have a bunch of people who thought it was kind of cool. I guess it's a reflection of the user-base on P&C really, we participate, encourage and support and so on. I think it also blurred as I tried to cut through a lot of the 'mystery' and bullshit about aftershave and to provide people with an idea of the chemistry underlying aftershaves - assisted ably by @TomG and @alfredus to whom I am incredibly grateful as their knowledge and feedback were instrumental in APR getting to where it is today truth be told.

Anyway....More countless hours passed of searching the internet, forums etc and I soon realised that there was very little information available that accurately and precisely defined the process so I thought bugger this I am going to make an aftershave using rigorous (as possible at home), accurate principles and I am going to document as much of the process as possible (without harming existing artisans and commercial interests). It was an attempt to provide empirical measurements, evidence and instruction for education, for those that were interested and as a guide for anyone else who came along and wanted to journey down the rabbit hole of perfumery and it's myriad of essential oils and absolutes.

It started out as a project on P&C based on my love of reading historical documents and science, and it ended up where we are today and along the way it became intertwined with the wet-shaving community that exists here on P&C - life is like that sometimes :)

I've got 4 months left if I am to go a year without buying any shaving products (note, have done two swaps in that period, and paid postage for APR A/Ssamples). I've barely made a dint in anything in that time.
Luckily none of the APR soaps appeal at the moment, but I can't wait for @Sxot to get back to me with info on the summer soaps.
