Having gone this far down the track I might as well go all the way and get some smelly. The trouble is, as you all know the stuff costs an arm and a leg so I am hoping someone might have a suggestion for something that smells musky/non flowery. Alternately are there any places out there that sell samples that I could try out.
Thanks peoples.

Are you looking for an

AFTERSHAVE: Lotion of various soothing ingredients to re-hydrate and soothe the skin after shaving

or

COLOGNE: Various essential oils or synthetic fragrances in a base of alcohol.

Aftershaves are often confused with colognes but usually have very little or no alcohol content - but may contain menthol or other cooling ingredients. Colognes slapped to the face will give you a 'Home Alone' moment due to the 80% alcohol content.

If you want aftershave, a few of they guys around here will vote for Speick. Best part is that as a 'splash' aftershave it is pretty cheap - think under $20.

If you want a cologne, then I would suspect there is plenty for you in places like Chemist Warehouse who have some big specials on at the moment. If you like Musk, I think they have 100ml bottles of Jovan Musk for $20 right now.

RM took the words right off my keyboard.

After shave and Cologne are different things. It's the confusion of the two that's allowed the cosmetics industry to hijack the idea that after shave and alcohol is bad for your skin (and also because they sell moisturisers).

Then, just to make things confusing, there are the 'weakened' colognes sold as After Shave - like good ol Brut and Pinaud. These are nothing more than fragrance with water and glycerine, so they don't really do much for you skin anyway.

However, there are some aftershaves that will linger a good while and almost double as colognes. Tabac and Musgo Real are two that come to mind.

An AS that does a great job but doesn't linger or get in the way of your cologne, is Proraso. Colognes are really hard to recommend, as everyone smells and likes different things, and sometimes the same cologne smells a bit different on different people.

I don't know about musky, but I like the citrus style stuff, and Speick Cologne is very cheap, but not nasty. My current fave is Taylor's Sandalwood. I find both are distinctly 'male' scents.

Thanks guys see how easy it is to get confused - I alreday have a Nivea after shave balm and one from Burts Bees so I am really looking for cologne My wife really liked the smell of the Sandalwood sample that JugV2 sent me so I had a look and fainted at the price - $80.00 for 50ml. I will check out your other suggestions.

What Sandalwood was that, Trumpers?

The Trumpers is really nice. If that was the one, then Taylors is very similar, but less vanilla and bit more woody, and is much more affordable - about half the price for twice as much.

Yes just had a look on the Mensbiz site and Taylors looks like it will be a starter when some more cash hits the bank.

All depends on what you want.

I went to my perfume shop in Marrickville today and tested a few fragrances that I like. Really a good idea to get out and have a smell! I currently have Marc Jacobs 'BANG!' on my wrists, it's a Black Pepper and Cedar stormer - really powerful juice. My helpful assistant also carded Bvglari pour Homme Soir which was really nice but in a much lighter goumand style, while I also looked at some YSL La Nuit De L'Homme which was a slightly spicy oriental with a real sweet undertone to it.

Since you are a bit older than the rest of us, many older fragrances can be found at really cheap prices. Best place for you out that way is Chemist Warehouse at Blacktown (near the Westpoint Entrance across from the Train Station) or Penrith (In the Harvey Norman complex on Mulgoa Road, next to the M4). I am lucky - I have two of them here in Campsie.

A couple of ones you could consider from their current catalog:
  • Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, 100ml $39.95
  • Aramis, 110ml $49.95
  • Jovan Musk, 88ml $9.95
  • Pierre Cardin EDC, 80ml $19.95
  • Quorum, 100ml $19.95
  • Pino Silvestre, 125ml $19.95
  • Guy Laroche Drakkar Noir, 100ml $49.95
  • ck Obsession, 125ml $39.95

I think Jovan Musk and Quorum for $30 is well worth it.

There's others you might like if you went to a better, more specialist retailer. YSL Rive Gauche pour Homme or YSL pour Homme for starters.

Aramis is foul, foul stuff. Pungent, cloying and hard to shift.

I tried it in Myer the other week and had to find a bathroom to wash it off. Could stil smell it hours later.

But then someone will probably tell me they thing it's the best stuff ever.

Pino is cheap, but smells it IMO. Very peppery and piney.

Thanks for that Razor, some of those prices look really good - I was an Aramis user when I still had all my own body parts so I might just go and check them out. Much appreciated.

You want musk? Check out Narciso Rodriguez For Him Parfum Intense. You can get it for $99.95 for a 100ml bottle from feelingsexy.com.au...

This might be a bit out of your price range, and I understand that, but it's the deepest, richest, thickest, sexiest thing I've ever smelled in my life. It's full of musk, but in a very manly way. It's hard to describe - probably best to try it yourself. I tried it myself at my local David Jones (The Tester they have for the Narciso Rodriguez For Him EDT is actually the EDP intense, which is a little shonky, but hey it gives you a chance to try it yourself). Just note that the For Him EDT smells significantly different than the EDP intense, to the point where you could probably happily own both they're different enough (if you want).

One thing that I love about it so much is that it's an absolute BOMB. It's strong as hell and easily lasts all day with huge sillage. You end up paying a little more, but you get something that is twice as strong as anything else in that price range, and easily twice as amazing in terms of scent quality. I seriously can't sing the praises of this stuff enough.

GT I have a bottle of Sandalwood AS lotion. I forget what brand, I will check it out when I get home. Yours for $10 plus postage if you want it. I don't like it because I don't like a thick AS. It's like a cream.

Does it go on and disappear or do you have to rub it in like a lotion?

It rubs the lotion on it's skin. Or else it gets the hose again.

heh sorry couldn't resist.

It's rather thick as a cream and you need a tiny amount and you rub it in exactly like you would any cream.

You could also try essential oils on the pulse points as they tend to hang around for a long time and you can create your own mix by using different ones.

I use them exclusively now but used to use them with cologne to give a personalised note.

I don't mix into another bottle just dab and mix on my skin as the mood takes me.

Go have a sniff at a health food shop. Musk and some woods would be nice. Sniff a couple at the same time.

Just another suggestion to throw out there.

I guess some of them can be expensive though they do last awhile.
