Weekly Razor Review

Not into SE razors myself as can't afford to fall down that Rabbit Hole but appreciate the length's our review guru @Errol goes to obtaining the latest and greatest hardware. Another detailed review of what looks like an interesting razor. Keep up the great work! (y)

I'm appreciating SE more and more as I use them. Just a different "feel" from the DE shave. As my sabbatical year approaches, I'm very tempted to sneak in one last razor purchase, and I've been havering over whether to get the Hawk or the Rocca. (I can't do both.)

However, it'll have to wait for a few weeks, as I've given in to temptation and asked @Irish to make me another brush that I don't need. :rolleyes::p

Go for the Hawk. It gives me a more efficient and as smooth a shave as any of the 50+ DEs that I own!

Its good that you’re not anxious. If you can wait two weeks I’ll review the Rocca and explain why I recommend the Hawk. Let’s just say the Rocca and I don’t see eye to eye.
 
Razorock Hawk V3 (OC) (Canada)

Many of the SE razor I see have me thinking they look like a miniature fire rake; throw some tines on and – I rest my case. For some time, I wasn’t aware that Razorock had produced an OC version of the Hawk V3 but when I found out and went to the web site, the only V3 available happened to be an OC with the Halo handle, so that’s the one I ended up with. Ah! Look at that, I’ve found a tooling mark! Sorry, the finish of the Razorock products of late has been exceptionally good and I’m being pedantic. There is a narrow machine mark around the base of the centre post on the cap, but in the scheme of things this is another exceptionally finished razor from Razorock; the quality of their work must be appreciated. This razor is simply the open comb version of the Hawk V3 reviewed last week.

Any thoughts I may have had about wanting trying a Feather Professional Super blade in the OC went out the window after the first couple of strokes. Hawk’s V3 OC is a totally different shaving experience to its standard plated SB sibling; added efficiency with noticeably more blade feel. Efficiency has been increased to around that of a Karve CB #D, maybe slightly higher. If there was any more blade feel I think I would have been complaining that it was too much, but where the blade feel sits now is fine with me. The Hawk just glided over the face and there was no feeling of the open comb plate and the delivered shave was both smooth and super close. As much as I liked Razorock’s Hawk V3 SB version reviewed last, I prefer the open comb variant more. This razor has won me.

Muhle Rocca R94 - V4 (Germany)



Muhle’s Rocca V4, in its various guises has been rousing up the local shaving community and getting everyone excited so what better time than now to chuck a blade in mine and see what all this ruckus is about. I’d stored the Rocca V4 away with the intention of doing a run of reviews on each variation but peer pressure led to a change of heart so I dug it out to see how it performs. It’s taken a while for Muhle to evolve to the fourth version so one would assume that there has been ample time to listen to customer feedback and produce what should be a masterpiece. This razor has a fully machined stainless steel head and is not a metal injected head like that of the earlier versions.

There is nothing special looking about the cap with its elongated blade positioning pins and a blade clamping surface positioned back from its edge. Other than a hole for the handle post there is no other machining present on the rear of the mildly convex plate, not even a lather groove. Lather is dispersed via a shallow groove under the edge of the blade and in practice this set up worked extremely well. While the handle is nicely proportioned, it is hollow and this has contributed in producing a very respectable all up weight of 93g. To complete the package the whole razor has been blasted and is presented in a satin finish.

Selection of the first blade was simple; I’d recently received some Wizamet Iridium Super blades and this choice was further reinforced by the recommendation of users. Smooth, this razor certainly ticked that box but the efficiency level was well down on what I’d expected, somewhere on the high side of a Karve CB #B level. There is the slightest hint of blade feel but only just up on neutral. I’m lost as to why the Rocca V4 is receiving such wide acceptance though, it’s way too mild and with subdued blade feel the whole razor just feels dull and boring; it’s not for me. Surely, this cannot be the razor being raved about.

Even before the review was complete, I’d come up with a two-pronged plan. Firstly, my next razor for review would be a comparison shave using the Rocca V1 I recently acquired, and secondly, I’d seek the assistance of @Razor Burn who has declared the Rocca ‘King’. King of what I don’t know, but what better person to give a second opinion on my Rocca V4? Thanks Razor Burn for your advice and comments:

“Hope you're well mate, just letting you know that I have finished my trials and can confirm that the R94 shaves like the others; smooth, efficient and 2 passes + touch ups with a suitable blade left me with BBS or equivalent each time. Best results with Wizamet & Gillette Yellows.
Blade feel is present but at no time did I fear it would butcher me but it does bite if you're sloppy and irritation can occur if add too much pressure or an extra pass as is usually my case. From experience 2 pass is more than enough for a solid DFS”.
