If you do not have an AntiVirus product, or use a free product like AVG (yuck), Avira Free (ok), Avast Free (ok) or even the BitDefender Free (pretty good) - then I suggest you get this. You should be able to protect all your machines with this, just sign up from a different email address for reach PC you own.

We use this at work and I'm not very impressed how much of a resource hog it is when it is scanning.

Is the personal version any better in this regard?

Most are pretty bad during scanning these days unless on an SSD and even then it's noticeable. You can turn off a few bits in it which reduce resource consumption markedly while not losing much protection.
