I'm a real geek

I've got an old s939 system that is my work box. I use old business/accounting software that winXP plays well with, so it's my business PC and not connected to the net, just to printers, fax machines and external drives for back ups. (This machine I am using right now is an old AMD x6 core 1090T PC with win7 for internet browsing and some old games so it's 3 years old as well). I'm not geeky in the sense of aquiring new tech, just geeky in the way I maintain and upgrade hardware if it's worthwhile etc, my laptop is a dell vostro 14" that's 5 years old upgraded 2 years ago with 4GB RAM, the fastest core 2 duo I could get second hand, ubunto OS, (heaps quicker that the shipped vista OS ever was), and a seagate momentus XT HDD for example.

Anyway, this old business desktop PC is a S939 dual core like I said, a GB GA-K8NS. Seem to lock up a bit recently. Caps near the CPU are all swollen, and are probably the cause.
So before I go search around badcaps.net , is anyone here proficient with capacitor replacement and knows where to get caps to replace 3300uF, 6.3V, low ESR, KZG type , 10mm dia, aluminum electrolytic radial solder caps?

My soldering skills are certainly nowhere near what is required to undertake re-capping a board.

No idea on where to get them either, but would think that your best bet is to start somewhere like Jaycar or one of the other 'real' electronics suppliers. Dickkies used to be the place but since they got rid of all components and just started selling TV's mobile phones and laptops, the business has gone downhill markedly.

Aside, I have an older Gigabyte s939 board that has been sitting idle for nearly 4 years now. I also have a dual core CPU and some DDR2 RAM to go with it. Was just thinking the other day that I was going to list it on OCAU soon. Will get details when I get home.

I'm not a top class solderer, I have recapped PSUs before. This same system had a dead antec PSU and I repaired that by replacing some caps.
Mobo recapping is a more scarier thing altogether. I've tried it one before on a dead board and it didn;t fix it. But this board isn't dead, boots and runs fine generally, just locks up every second day, so a few bucks for caps is worth it, otherwise I have a heap of DDR ram and a decent dual core s939 CPU that is useless to me (I think it was the almost top of the range 4400+)

Best place to find capacitors I have found is ebay. I've trawled through countless electronic suppliers websites and hard copy catalogues, most seem to only have pana caps. Pana caps are probably good, but harder to find the exact match, as people don;t talk about them so much, also they are normally a larger diameter can, so they probably biuld them to last, but not fit in the tight spacing mobo manufacturers give.

Took a trip to badcaps.net and read that most people recommend. Bang that into ebay and it's a lot quicker to find that all the local specialists website or book catalogues.
So for ~$4, worth a shot repairing the mobo as the alternative is throwing it out and building a whole new system with new CPU, RAM and GPU.

I have a GA-K8N-SLI board here if you need it. Been in storage for 3-4 years at least.

I've also got a 3500+ CPU, but if you have a 4200+ dual core then you want that one instead. I would throw in the CPU if you needed to use it to flash the BIOS or something - not sure what this board can run currently.

Thanks for the offer.
I've got the caps on order and I may as well give it a try, but if it doesn;t work, expect a PM.

Current mobo is a GA-K8N, the AGP version of the same mobo you mentioned I think.
Yeah, I have heaps of DDR and also a few S939 CPUs, got the 4400+ and 4200+, and a single core 3200+ (I liked my s939 AMD CPUs :D )
