A SR with an edge finished on diamond pasted balsa (0.5μm, 0.25μm and 0.1μm) can give you an edge that is probably the keennest edge with can be achieved on a steel SR blade. That being said, such an edge is not liked by all SR shavers, particularly those who developed their SR shaving technique on less-keener edges.

Beginners in the gentlemanly art know no better (worse?) and quickly adapt to a super-keen blade edge. I feel that it is more of a shaving technique problem for those who find a balsa edge just too keen.

Basically, the keener the edge, the flatter the shave angle should be. You may be surprised at how flat the shave angle needs to be to really enjoy shaving with the keennest of edges. Indeed, it will be so flat that you will not feel the edge cutting your whiskers, particularly when shaving WTG. It is not what you feel while shaving that counts but rather the finished result.

Another thing to watch is shave pressure. Generally, a very flat shave angle can be more forgiving to shave pressure variations. It is still however, important to keep your shaving pressure (e.i., the pressure of the edge against your skin) as light as possible for a close shave.

Always remember to shave just to remove the lather. Don't worry about trying to cut whiskers, they will come away with the lather and you may (should) not even feel them.
