What Timber Is This?

Yesterday I cleaned up the timber case that housed my matching set of six Yamamasa kamisori. This included sanding off old varnish and stain back to clean timber. I then applied a couple of coats of bees wax, polishing between coats. I have been told that this set of kamisori came from the estate of a Japanese gentleman in the USA. This would indicate to me that the case may have been made in either Japan or the USA.

Ny thoughts on what type of timber the case may be made bof?

At a rough guess, it looks like Meranti.

You most probably are correct. It sure looks like a timber from the Shorea genus.
