About to try these green Astra's.
How many passes is typical out of them for average thickness hair ?
 
Yea about 3, regardless of whether you go a 2 or 3 pass. At the price DE's are cheap enough to ditch and not try and drag them out.
 
Unless the blade's a stonker, and in spite of my concerted efforts I haven't found many of them around, you can invariably get three 2/3 pass shaves out of one. Some blades more (Perma Sharp Super for instance) and some blades even more. I get ten shaves out of a vintage Schick and seven out of a Gillette Spoiler.

Some blades, particularly at the 3 shave spectrum, just get plain nasty and some just lose sharpness. I'm sure I could shave an entire month (every other day) with a Schick but the results towards the end aren't particularly impressive.

The Astra SP is best on shave 2 so I'd say get at least 2 shaves out of them. 3 full shaves would be easy peasy for this blade if you like its characteristics.

I think it's a dog :laugh:
 
I get 2 weeks min out of an Astra can push it to a month. Every face and blade and razor and soap and brush and water is different :))

Wow, pushing an Astra to a month? You've either got two chin hairs or fluff (insert smiley here). You'd get three months out of a Schick PP.

What kind of finish/close shave do you get after two weeks with a blade? How heavy is your beard and do you shave every day?

Yeah, if you're not using it on a 1 shave per day basis, then time is pretty irrelevant. It's pretty hard to imagine the beard or face that could make a DE last for up to 30 2-pass shaves.

If I only shaved 3x a month, one PSS would last me til after Xmas.
 
I'm finding 3 days about the limit for me with a green astra.

Still have to improve my lathering as it is either too wet or too dry, unable to hit the happy medium, let alone for when I go for the second or third pass.
 
I use my green astra's with my merkur futur. 7 days per week shaving. I think I must just tolerate blades longer than most. I get get 2 weeks out of a feather too but thats a max.

Full thick beard. I am one of those Scott's ancestors folk so hair everywhere hence ending up on this forum.

I started playing with straights as i find I can shave much closer.

But yes for DE I can get a week from most blades. Except dorkos. They last -1 shave :p

Most will adjust their lather during a shave. I certainly do. It's easier to start off a touch dry and add a bit of water (I face lather so it's just a matter of dipping the tip of the brush in water) which also adds a bit of heat to the lather. Win, win.

Also when you paste for the first pass, you have to dip to reactivate the brush lather anyway for the second one.

I do anyway. But then I've not sat watching Mantic59's youtubes for hours.

I did that once. It almost put me off the whole traditional shaving thing. Mentioned that on one of my first posts on B&b and got my first official warning. The logical fact that I couldn't possibly have known he was a member made no difference. It was downhill from there on in. Watching a half naked dude shaving is seriously off putting. He looks like he's got some evil skin condition.

Man tics got nothing. Wasn't there some bloke with a whole shave system he was flogging where he referred to the face as "the manifold"

As for that other place, it comes across as a bunch of pretentious megalomaniacs!
These blades feel as if they're blunt.
I'm on the second last blade of the tuck and find that they're not getting close enough with out using pressure, which then causes irritation.
I've tried a combination of 2/3/4 pass methods, all to no avail.
Is frustrating me :(

That pretty much summarises it. There are some really nice people and if you're a collector it's the place to hang out.

I'm sure there are, yet the stories of previous members scorned has left me a lurker, indeed in part why I lurked here for so long.
It just feels so.. faux!

I know I'm short of experience, yet it feels like they're blunt/not getting close enough/dragging.
I'm using a metal Gillette adjustable if that helps.
