Wolf Whisker Brushes at Maggards

What's the deal with wolf whiskers? Other than the looks of course.

It seems the waitlist can now be accesses via Maggards
Peter has always sold a small selection of his brushes via online stores. Usually Handlebar Supply, or in the past Shave Revolution. They are usually synthetics. He makes a batch and puts them up randomly. Invariably they are sold out within an hour of being put up.

I think you just answered your own question. He pours his own resins, and each handle is hand turned making most of the handles unique. The Black Wolf Synth knots in the these brushes are very good . If you can get on his wait list then he will make a custom brush for you, with your choice of handle size colour and shape, with whichever knot you choose. I've got one coming with an Envy White knot, but am tempted to send him a Shavemac knot soon too.

How much they cost generally?

@Psmith How long was the wait and how hard to get on? Might grab one if my bonus this year is ok.

It depends what number you get on the list. Peter knocks out about 12 a week, so number 150 (which I was originally) took about 3 months wait. The second time I got on the list I was number 26 so you never know.
Getting on the list is a PITA though. You need to have an account with Wait List and click as soon as it opens. And I mean as soon. It fills up within seconds. The Wait List opens as follows:
  1. September 24, at 12pm (NY time zone)
  2. October 2, at 8pm (NY time zone)
  3. October 10, at 4am (NY time zone)
  4. October 18, at 12pm (NY time zone)
  5. October 26, at 8pm (NY time zone)
  6. November 3, at 4am (NY time zone)

October 10th would be a good bet. I believe that is 6pm Melbourne (don't quote me). I do believe that they are worth the hassle though. And you get to have a lot of fun choosing the handle and knot.

My advice if you get on the list try to get exactly what you want first time around. I was lucky enough to get on the very last list that he allowed you to purchase two brushes on. I also researched the heck out of knot types etc. and spent hours pouring over his site selecting the handle shape and colours. When I purchased mine he did not list the Envy White knot as being available and in hindsight I should have asked. Fortunately I know have an envy white going in to a really nice handle from another artisan brush maker (this is going to be about 8-10 weeks guys so sorry it will be a long wait to see it but will be well worth it). Basically what I am saying here is make the most of the opportunity and make sure you are 100% happy with the brush you are requesting before hitting go. I found Peter very easy to deal with and therefore do not believe this would be an issue for anyone.

Now please don't take what I am about to say the wrong way. The quality of Peter's brushes is absolutely outstanding and I am very happy with what I got. All of the above being said though would I go through the process again? The answer is no. I am not saying do not get a brush from Wolf Whiskers in fact I highly recommend that you get yourself on one of his lists and get yourself a brush but please for your own sake follow the recommendation above. Once you have a brush from Peter and are happy with it I would suggest that you can then go and speak to some of the other artisan brush makers for your next custom. I have a couple of customs on the way and I have found both of the artisans exceptionally easy to deal with as well. One of them has a small backlog (this is the brush mentioned above) and there is a small wait time involved but you do not have to be sitting at your computer at stupid o'clock to get on a list for him to make you one. The other brush was made within several days of me contacting the maker (he had a suitable knot and the blank already in stock which helped).

All in all I am simply stating that there is more than one artisan brush maker who makes outstanding brushes and they are all well worth considering.

Totally agree. I wanted a 26mm Envy White which Peter happened to have on hand, though it wasn't listed on his site. Make sure you have an idea of the type of knot you want and ask. He will happily make a brush with any knot you send him, so you can source your own knot as well. I was hesitant to get a WW brush because I didn't fancy a TGN knot. But I'm over the moon with this Envy White. My next one may well be with an Elite Razors or Brad Sears Manchurian, although the Envy White is pretty special so I may get another one of those. His synthetics are also excellent.

My thinking was that I got on the list (I have a baby so am up at 4 or 5 most days) and then forgot about it. When it came up it was a bonus. If you're in need of a new brush quickly there are many other places to go to.

@nsavage, mind sharing which brush makers you went to?

I will be honest I have no idea about brushes. Maybe it's worth waiting a little before pulling the trigger

I have heard mixed reviews about the TGN knots also. Fortunately for me mine has broken in nicely (it was a tiny bit scratchy early on) and the tips are now nice and soft. I am extremely happy with it.

Not at all.

Rudy Vey has kindly made me a brush with a Shavemac 2 band Silvertip knot. He had a very quick turnaround on the brush and was very reasonably priced.

Doug Korn is making me a brush with an Envy White knot. This is the brush that has quite a lengthy wait and the handle that I have chosen is quite an investment in terms of cost.

One other thing I would have to say about Wolf Whiskers brushes is that they are exceptionally good value for money as well.

And for the sake of it I shall include some photos.....

First of the Wolf Whiskers, the badger is a TGN 2 bandas mentioned (and has since bloomed nicely) and the synthetic is a Ubersoft 2

I really like the look of the first one. Just not sure what knot to get.

The Shavemac silvertip is a knot that has always interested me.

You can get Shavemac knots in brushes from any of the artisans mentioned above you just have to ask. In some instances they will ask you to purchase the knot and ship it to them and in others they will have it on hand.

My experience is still somewhat limited but I am learning quickly. My suggestions would be:

If you like backbone and soft tips go for an Envy White or a Shavemac 2 band (normal not D01)
If you like backbone and are not as concerned about the soft tips go TGN Finest 2 band or Shavemac finest
If you like super soft and luxurious go for a Shavemac silvertip
If you like a backbone and also like a lot of scrub go for a Shavemac 2 Band D01 (I think the Silvertip D01 is similar but not as strong backbone)

Like I said I am only learning. Perhaps some other members can chip in here as well? @alfredus, @Draco Noir, @Psmith?

Another thing to take in to account is knot shape as this effects the loft and size you will prefer. As an example I prefer 24mm knots but dropped to a 23mm knot for the Shavemac fan knot in the Rudy Vey brush because it will have teh same feel as a 24mm bulb on the face.

The best thing you can do is read lots and lots of reviews to determine what you think you might like. I would also suggest that if you are not 100% certain it may be best to get the knot in a cheaper or generic handle before getting the custom one made. With the knots mentioned above I would not think it would be difficult to sell the first brush when the custom one is acquired.

Plenty of great comments @nsavage
I like your general categories...

You're wrong on the Silvertip D01 - it is a category 1 - backbone with soft tips. The difference is that the backbone comes from density (I think that is what the "D" stands for...?). So it's like a Silvertip but packed with extra hairs to give it backbone like the 2-band. It has the super-soft tips of the Silvertip.

I prefer the 2-band knot personally but if you like backbone then I'd go in this order for the Shavemac knots (from lowest to highest - or floppy to stiff):
Finest
Silvertip
2-band
Silvertip D01
2-band D01

I have one each in the middle three. My personal preference is the 2-band but I don't mind the Silvertip D01.

@alfredus is this how you see the backbone and density system of Shavemac?

(Also worth noting is IMO that there really is only 3 different "grades" of hair that SM have cleverly made into 5 or so...)

I certainly hope that is the case with the D01's @filobiblic because I have one on the way from Shavemac also.
