Visiting with Mum today she bought out her fathers late 1920s Rolex. It was his everyday watch and only took it off for the war. It was given to him on his 21st. You can see where the solid gold band has corroded away and is no much thinner both in thickness and width. Once it got sharp and would occasionally cut his wrist he stoped wearing it. It has been serviced a while back (guess 20-30 years) and appears to be working well.
