I started using the "protective" version with shea butter recently. Interestingly enough, the soap isn't the standard white color :
The licorice part of the scent overpowers everything else unfortunately. I couldn't smell anything else, even though it's supposed to have notes of Mint and Vanilla. After a week in a non-air tight bowl, the scent has largely faded.
It's a soft soap and is supposed to be a high quality but low cost, "artisan made" soap. I've tried it twice and it's pretty good...especially for the shockingly low price (less than 5 USD from Connaught Shaving, which is much cheaper than Proraso's price of $10 USD outside of Italy). But I wouldn't say it's artisan quality. I got good, clean shaves with no irritation at all, but it felt like i had to use more product than a proper artisan soap to get a good lather. Compared to Proraso Red, it is at least as good or even better...and it doesn't have the strong sandalwood smell that some people aren't a fan of.
I think it's a good starter soap at least, especially for the low price. Something you can pick up to try as well and won't feel bad if it doesn't work for you.
