Got something cool? Non-shaving Acquisitions Thread

A 230mm K-tip gyuto in leaf spring steel from an Indonesian knife maker called kitchenknives.id, which I got from a local retailer. Jati wood handle which needs a touch of oiling, and a nice thin grind for the price.

Unusually straight for a gyuto, but I like the point. I usually prefer gyuto to santoku because they rock better. Is that a left-hand grind I see there? Leaf-spring steel lends itself nicely to a western grind that responds well to being refreshed on a steel, much more so than most stainless... (y)

I'm more of a slicer and push-cutter so this profile suits me fine. I've never quite nailed the finesse of rocking. It's an even grind both sides. This is my first non-stainless knife.

The rocking is really pretty much a misnomer, your dominant hand really moves in an ellipse, with the blade very lightly pinched between your thumb and index finger while the weight of your knife handle rests on your other fingers (you don't need to hold it as such), so the edge of your knife is always in motion in its own plane, but appears to be rocking in place.

An early birthday present to myself, since Mme G told me in no uncertain terms that she wouldn't spend that kind of money on a pair of gloves.

So soffft...

Very nice! Are they the ones that allow you to still work your phone? Genius!

Do what I do. If I know Mrs Nanook won't pay for what I want for a present, I ask her to go halves.

In our case, the pot of money is the same, so there's not much point.

I think that is the point?

They're the Devizes shorter finger gloves. They don't do touchscreen, but I don't like to be welded to my phone 100% of the time anyway, and I wanted something a bit more dressy.
Maybe so, but what it does do, is it gets her permission to buy the expensive item that she would otherwise refuse to do :)
I just used some of the proceeds from my little monthly market stall. No permission needed... :)

The Buffalo Trace will be new to me, the Eagle Rare a replacement - and both get me an entry into the Nick's contest to win a bottle of Pappys!

The Macallan was discounted due to the damaged box (slightly at the bottom - as if I care) and the Green Spot is a homage to trying it in Ireland recently - nice

I can Recommend Waterford, especially the Cuvee if you are after an Irish whiskey.

I just picked up a nice black and grey Harris tweed coat, very flattering and modern cut.
Have to say I’m not usually one for tweed as it does have a fairly stuffy vibe generally but sometimes it just works when the weave isn’t too busy

I'll definitely say, it's not cool but I've just caught my first dose of covid and I'm not happy.

The 3 guys that work for me have all had it at least twice, one just got over his 3rd case of it.

I guess it was eventually going to happen but I was hoping to not catch it as I hate feeling crook.

Now I have to work from home for the next two weeks

I fell ill yesterday too, spent the night in a different room so as not to disturb the cook.
Not testing positive for covid yet, maybe too soon, or it's Man Flu, even worse!
When I tested myself, it come up instantly. There was no waiting 15 minutes for the results. Michelle was negative but tested herself a day later as she was starting to go downhill and she's now positive. I took Tuesday off but after one day I was bored sitting around so I'm working from home to keep myself busy. Work has told me to stay home this week as well as the next so it's going to drive me crazy.

I don't often get sick, it's been years since I've even had a cold so this has hit me pretty hard even with the vaccinations and boosters.
