Continuing on my blade testing journey I popped a Permasharp in today. Not bad, not bad at all! Now, I have to accept that testing this blade in the condition my face is in after the rough treatment I go the last two shaves it's likely better than I think it is. Nice and close, no irritation, not as smooth as I would have liked but I feel it could be sharper. I seem to have little bumps at hair follicles especially around my chin. I am guessing these are a result of the irritation the last couple of days and would not make for a great shave with any blade. Will see what happens in the next few days as my skin condition returns to normal.
Brush? I really like this brush. Very comfortable handle. The length means the base rests against my palm, and the finger groove is a pleasant depth and length away. Lovely to hold. The bristles have plenty of backbone, and the tips are soft but err not too soft??? I mean they don't scratch by I can still feel them giving my face a nice rub. They have more softness to give however as it's only my third or fourth shave with this brush. It gives up the lather well too. Do I prefer it over my badgers? Well, no, they are different, not better or worse. Depends on what I feel like on the day. It's nice to mix things up a bit. I may end up settling on a favourite in the next months ahead but only time will tell.
First run with Wickhams Super Smooth. Any yes, it is, super smooth.
It's a Croap, as they say. Very soft soap. I did chuck it into the fridge for a bit just to see what difference our 300° temps are making on it. At 5° it's firm, but soft, like Shaver Heaven. It soon softened and came back to room temperature however. I was a bit worried about not being able to load with the brush but that fear wasn't founded. After blooming it, and soaking the brush, leaving it a little wetter than usual it loaded up just fine. The brush did push the soap into a concave form but not enough to spill the container. Having being spoilt with Shaver Heavens containers, loading in a full tub with no head room wasn't the best especially when the soap is soft enough to be moved by the brush. So, something to be aware off. This soap isn't great in the heat. Given it's from the UK where it's cold and room temp is probably low 20's all year round it's not something the manufacture was thinking about. The scent when I smelt the raw soap was nice, but strong, maybe too strong. This is no way to judge a scent however so ignore that, bloom and lather. Once lathered, and on my face, I very much liked the scent. Not too subtle for my dull nose, not very complicated, just pleasant. Just how I like it. It faded well after rinsing and didn't interfere with my AS.
How does it perform? Easy to load with a wet brush, (you could scoop it like I cream too I suppose) easy to lather, didn't require a lot of water but I didn't test it's water volume boundaries. Face lathering produced more than enough for three, probably four passes. It's thick, creamy and this I really like. Slick? Yes, Protection? I think so. Cushion, sure. Stable? Absolutely. Performance? I would say on par with Shaver Heaven (it's my current bench mark) but a thicker lather. It left my skin feeling soft and moist. After one shave (which is too soon to tell isn't it?) I'd say I love this soap and it will be in the top drawer for some time to come. I will be buying some more at the earliest opportunity. They have some tubs of Sandalwood there I am trying not to buy as we speak....
Finally: Is this too much for SOTD? Should I be splitting these posts up into reviews of each item into their respective forums???? LMK. I'm not 100% sure how things are supposed to work around here. For now, ignore, or enjoy. You choose.
