(I know it is NOT gaffa but specialist aviation tape AND it meets all industry standards - but still a little disconcerting when you are relying on this for the next 17+ hours over the ocean!)

Nah, I reckon it's duct tape.

Nothing wrong with that though. If you want to stop something moving, use duct tape. If you want to make it move, you use WD-40. But don't ever spray WD-40 on duct tape, or the planet will go

No contest, gaffer tape is useful for lots of things, but (and because) it tears easily. You wouldn't want your plane's wing to fall apart over the Indian Ocean, would you?

This is speed tape, which is like 20x better of the best gaffer tape you ever used.

It will be to protect the paint on the wing - it will have cracked and possibly started flaking off. Remember you are going 900km/h at 40,000ft. The air against the skin/paint will just rip off. The tape and the adhesive will protect for further damage and/or moisture ingress which is very bad for composite panels.

The plane will be booked in for paint already - probably in the next month or so when the one in maintenance/paint comes back, this will probably go in.

I've seen it used on planes where the paint has eroded - just from the friction of the air. More common than you might think.

Certain planes suffer from this more than others, and in certain places on the airframe. CRJ's are notorious for this on the forward equipment doors, so speedtape goes on to protect it, and then the speed tape also erodes
