Shave of the Day 2014

After trying out a Fatboy for a few shaves, the last couple witha Vokshod and Proraso red, which I quite like. I found myself fantisising about that tub of Simpsons Lavendar and Vertivert (sic) Luxury shaving cream. So tonight I pulled it back out of the drawer, swapped that sharp little Russian into the Merkur 38C and went for it.

The difference a razor makes is astounding, I found the fatboy to be too mild and had it on 7 as a minimum, where as the 38C felt like it was trying to eat my face off and I had to really restrain it. Yet most people rate these modern razors as mild.

A nice close shave and the scent of the Simpsons is as sweet and yet dirty as I remembered.

I don't know anyone who feels Merkur's are mild. They're pretty aggressive. Especially when put next to Fatboy Slims, which barely do a thing on 3 or below. A 34C was my daily razor for 4 years until the 30C came along and did the same job without biting if I took the piss.

It's just as efficient as the 34, without the aggression.

I haven't been keeping up with reading this thread and didn't realise there was an official format. All I am willing to say is I don't allow shave voyeurs in and if they try to get it I cut them.

Finished the above shave with a splash of thayers unscented witch hazel, now thinking about some balm, I only have nivea sensitive, L'Oreal (something or other my wife bought it and it is too thick and heavy) and Natio which is alright but a bit mentholy for this time of night. So Nivea it is.

A/S balm hunting will be my next excursion.Anyone got any recommendations? I don't know why I am asking surely no one here woud have an opinion, ;)

I think the Fatboy will be going back on the market, its just not for me.

Is this a new badge of honour for P&C members? This must be the only forum [best Jeremy Clarkson voice] in the world [/best Jeremy Clarkson voice] where this occurs!

I've got an idea, why not start a collective, a group, I know - a BROTHERHOOD!

The Brotherhood of Fatboy Cynics???

What do people think? Do you want to sign up?

Most forums just talk up Fatboys to keep the prices on their hoarded stock healthy.

It's a shave conspiracy. I'll try one*. The slim is kind of meh, but a Fatty might have something with the extra weight.

*It's probably the only razor Mark hasn't tried to hook me onto.

I don't think there is an official format.

A bit violent but I understand. I just find it sad that many obviously haven't got their own dens

I just use Nivea after shave balm. It works, it's not greasy, doesn't cost the earth and you can get it anywhere. Not in to smelly stuff anyhow so that's easy.

.....I think the Fatboy will be going back on the market, its just not for me.

I'm not a big fan of the Gillette adjustable head although I haven't tried either the Slim or the Fat Boy. Just feels clumsy and heavy. Beautiful engineering though.

Might have to try a Fatboy pass around ...

I have just started to emerge from the worst case of Man-Flu that I have experienced in at least 30 years,so no shave for at least 6 days.

Little butterscotch with some Speick soap.

First pass with the Feather AC SS and all that growth was just gone. It was easier than just a day or so of growth.

I did a second pass with the Futur and that was it, smoothness again.

I sort of don't change much these day. Found my shave.

Gee a bit of it going around. I was out for three/four days - a long time for me too.

Brush: Omega 31025
Soap/Cream: Cyril R. Salter French Vertiver
Razor: Gillette NEW (UK LC) with Edwin Jagger DE89 handle
Blade: Iridium Super (2)
Passes: 1x WTG, 2x XTG
After-shave: First 5 mins: Proraso Green Splash, then Razorock AS Wax (Original)

Yep the Omega again - I don't want anyone saying I didn't give a boara red hot go. I do prefer my badgers though. Face-lathered the CRS Vertiver. This smell is something else. First time I put it to my nose a couple of weeks ago I wretched, now each time I go into the bathroom I give it another sniff and it's sort of getting less repulsive. Anyway first shave with it and this stuff is top shelf. Smells like a bushfire and shaves like a dream. Great cushion and glide. Actually smells OK (and I just mean "OK") as a lather.

Use #2 for the Iridium Super (thanks @@Monsta_AU - this is blade #2). Definitely still smooth but it isn't so sharp. Not as bad as other Russian blades and hasn't left any irritation. But this blade doesn't suit as well as the previous Indian Wilk or my usual IP Reds. But the heavier handle on the NEW was a huge improvement.

I needn't write anything about the post-shave routine. Works 100% for me!

Jeez...just realised something in the past couple of weeks. My technique has been getting pretty lazy. A steady diet of sharp yet forgiving blades coupled with the early morning rush for work has lead to being very sloppy with blade angle and pressure and my lower neck finally said "stuff you" with a nice dose of razor rash.

A few days off and back at it with a bit more care. Might have to run a few derby's through. they let you know when your angle is on the piss!

Been a while since I did a SOTD so ...

Brush: Vintage butterscotch Simpson
Soap/Cream: Mike's Natural Shave Soap - Hungarian Lavender (again!)
Razor: Merkur 38C
Blade: Personna Blue Lab - shave ?
After-shave: Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve

I know that the Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve is not everybody's cup of tea. In fact my wife only finds it OK. A bit 'old-fashioned' or worse 'old-man' it is sometimes described as.

Certainly it is very different to the normal Pinaud Clubman, not merely a concentrated version, and needs to be thought of as such. Like most Pinaud products the experience on the skin is very different to the sniff from the bottle. In fact I would be surprised if most people using it for the first time didn't smell it, think about not trying it, tried it, wondered why they did, vowed they never would again, then, and only then, some to a sudden realisation that, hey, I actually like this.

I'm not a person who can wear Lilac Vegetal - I've tried a few times and it still smelt horrid. The Special Reserve though is a must have available for me. Might have to plan a trip to the US around my current bottle running out!

Brush: Boeckhs Restored AllShaver
Soap/Cream: Occams Lime from the travelling box
Razor: Pureman Prototype
Blade: Gillette Black 7 O'Clock 2nd shave
After-shave: Nivea AS Splash

A great two pass shave. I used a drop of Occams and it just keeps going, nice thick lather. I stand by my call on the scent, it's just too vague for me.
The razor is outstanding and I previously said the head was too light.

I was wrong.

The head is the same size as most others, the length of the handle is deceptive but the brilliance in the design of this is how evenly the weight is distributed. No top heavy razor, using the head for pressure, this is superb in the hand.

I'm using the Nivea AS splash at the moment, I came into a bottle of it and I really like the scent.

Brush: Semogue Mistura
Soap/Cream: Castle Forbes Lime
Razor: Muhle R41
Blade: Feather - fresh blade
After-shave: Castle Forbes Lime AS balm

After giving my face a 3 day rest from the R41 last week I came back with a vengeance this morning. Usually I give Feather blades a miss as they irritate my skin. However a hunch needed to be tested. It turned out to be a great shave. Possibly the R41 and Feather blade are a great match for each other. The audible feedback from the razor was magnifique. The razor effortlessly mowed down a 3 day growth with ease.

No need for an alcohol-base AS relief so it was the CF balm to match the cream.
