Soap: Shaver Heaven - Hubba Hubba
Brush: Semogue 830
Razor: Kamisori - Western grind (on loan from @Draco Noir)
Post: Alum, Shaver Heaven - Summer Breeze Balm

I had been avoiding shaving all week in anticipation of my first shave with a straight, thanks to @Draco Noir for loaning me the Kamisori with a Western grind (and strop). He was kind enough to spend a bit of time with me today and passed on some of his fantastic shaving knowledge (among other things) as well as some blades to try. I was also fortunate enough to see his amazing collection of various straights and D/E razors. Draco gave the Kamisori a quick hone and strop prior to me taking it so it was better than razor sharp.

Now onto the shave, as I said I had been avoiding shaving so there was a bit of growth to get through. I made the lather slicker than normal as per Draco's advice which really helped the Kamisori slice through the hair like a hot knife through butter. It gave a really good audible feedback which I found very satisfying. I was planning on just doing a WTG pass on my checks to begin with and finishing off with a D/E, sounded good in theory but I don't tend to do things in halves. So I ended up doing a 2 pass shave being WTG, ATG and some clean up.

I definitely need to practise getting the right angle but when I found it boy was it amazing. I had some difficulties with the chin/jaw line and the far right side of my neck. I also nicked myself 4 times but they were tiny and I can't even tell where they are now. Apart from a few areas the closeness of the shave is amazing, better than what I have been able to achieve with the D/E and I had thought that was good. It also didn't take nearly as long as I was expecting but that maybe because I was enjoying it so much that I didn't want it to end.

I would definitely count this first foray into straights success and while there will be a big learning curve it's certainly doesn't seem as daunting as I initially thought although that probably says more about Draco's tutelage rather than anything else. Plus I'm hoping it should help my technique with the D/E too.

Big thanks to @Draco Noir for all your help and generosity, greatly appreciate it. (y)

Wow, fantastic news @saku39!!! Congratulations on an incredible effort for a very first straight razor shave (y):)(y)

Here's hoping you decide to stick with it and enjoy some of the great feelings of achievement involved. Well done mate ;)

By the way, what's a WTF pass? :p

There is no way I would have had anywhere near as good as experience without all your help and advice. It went a lot better than I expected and am definitely keen to stick with it, hopefully the first shave wasn't a fluke and I will keep improving,

Ah yeah What the F#@! should have been a WTG pass which I have since edited!:oops::D

Brush: Simpsons M7
Razor: Unknown Vintage Open Comb DE
Blade: GBE
Soap: Jabonman Brisa de Oriente
A/S: Jabonman Brisa de Oriente

A surprisingly excellent shave. Todays razor is recent acquisition, I picked it up at a local vintage market on Friday, no marking on the razor itself but the case is marked made in Japan. It's well balanced with no plating issues or bent teeth but it required a bit of work to get the blade aligned correctly, somewhat similar to a Fatip. The shave itself though was magnificent, didn't feel like I was cutting anything but after three passes and a bit of touch up a perfect BBS was achieved.

Yep; learning from somebody who knows is the secret to getting your method in order. I purchased a straight as my initial foray into wet shaving. After a week of cuts and blood spillage I started the Google thing. I picked up tips and hints here & there with my technique very slowly improving but it wasn't until I joined this forum that my learning curve increased substantially. Having other blokes relating how they wielded a straight helped refine & improve my technique, particularly as I have a minor mobility & coordination issue with my left side so anybody's individual techniques were of great interest & help to me. Listen to @Draco Noir and suck his brains for all it's worth.

The straight path will definitely improve your DE technique but after a while you may find using a DE quick & effective but lacking a little in excitement & personal satisfaction.

Synth Sunday

Pre: GFT lime skin food
Brush: WW Ubersoft II
Soap: Razorock Santa Maria del Fiore
Razor: merkur 34c
Blade: Feather
Post: alum, witch hazel, Myrsol Plastic Shave

Fantastic lather created tonight by the Wolfwhiskers, very slick and protective. Scent of the SMF is very good, great sweet Tuscan tobacco. I could sniff it all day. Performance is top notch as well.

The feather certainly deteriorates quickly. The difference between first and third pass is pretty apparent. I had to do quite some clean up at the end. But because of tonight's slick lather, no worries about burns or nicks.

Fantastic irritation free bbs shave tonight. Finished off with none other than the only menthol aftershave I have - Myrsol Plastic Shave (until my B&M arctique is here).

Lather shots here.

One day I do hope I get to meet @Draco Noir and teach me how to used a straight from top to bottom, and I'll become his grasshopper and never mess with @Draco Noir as an aussie straight grand master ;)(y):)

@SpeedyPC it's definitely worth the trip, @Draco Noir is an absolute wealth of knowledge, he went through the different types of straights, various grinds and alike so we could work out what would suit me best initially. He was very generous with his time, sharing his knowledge and was kind enough offering to loan me the Kamisori which I was not expecting. He also gave me various D/E blades to try. He was more than happy to answer the million questions I had and took me through everything from the basics of honing to making sure I knew how to strop (also loaning me a strop). He was an absolute gentleman and I have already signed on as his apprentice grasshopper! I am very lucky that he lives so close by and cannot speak highly enough of him.

I don't know of any other online forum that has the same sense of community that P&C has, especially in this day and age where everyone is going a million miles an hour and most people think nothing other than themselves. I'm just glad I decided to take the plunge into wet shaving as I never expected to get this involved and enjoy it so much.

Mastro Livi Damasteel Ladder, 6/8 Full Hollow, French Point

I admit I like Damasteel. Not only for its mesmerizing patterns but also for its keenness ability to shave. Although it is true it is somewhat aggressive on your skin, this steel is however impeccable in giving a close and smooth shave. This Mastro Livi Damasteel straight razor is enchanting for the ladder pattern used for the blade, not to mention the charm of amaranth buckeye burl used for the scales. Simply beautiful. Today's shave has also been the chance to try this Omega S-Brush, a super cheap synthetic brush however delivering a very good performance. If we consider the very cheap price, you can't be wrong in getting one of these Italian synthetic brushes.
  • Pre-Shave: RazorGuy Pre-Shave Oil
  • Soap: Weleda Shaving Cream
  • Brush: Omega S-Brush S10108 Blue, 27mm knot
  • Bowl: Gerby Bowl
  • Strop: Mastro Livi Medium Loom Strop "Coramella Italiana" and Hand Palm
  • Razor: Mastro Livi Damasteel Ladder, 6/8 Full Hollow, French Point
  • Post-Shave: Alum Block
  • Post-Shave: Argan Oil
  • After Shave: Geo F. Trumper West Indian Cologne

Razor: Gillette 'Fatboy' Adjustable (5)
Blade: Vintage Schick Superior Platinum (1)
Brush: Vintage butterscotch Simpson
Soap/Cream: Mike's Natural Shaving Soaps - Barbershop
Aftershave: Myrsol F/Extra

Monday mornings, even cold ones like today (apparent temp -2.9 when out early this morning) are so much better with a decent shave.

Have a good week at work for those who do, have a good week for those who don't!

Just up to Sydney and back for meetings today for me. Seat 6C as usual ;)

Very glad to hear that your first straight shave was a success @saku39 and that your still in one piece;). Keep up the good work, and make sure no one enables you into buying some new nice and shiny straight razors, haha
