Perma-Sharp Supers: Try some today!

Ok, well Shave 1 into this blade. I have nothing overly negative to say about it.

I'm using a feather blade as a benchmark as I've been comfortably using these now since I've started wet shaving.

I'm using a Merkur Progress.

I dialled it out to 5 for these. 2 pass shave - WTG / ATG and I got a BBS shave. It felt a lot nicer going ATG than the feathers and I could apply a bit of pressure.

So for a 'new blade' first shave, I'm happy with them. I'd like to see how far I can take these.

Price - 10/10 - 20c a blade...
Sharpness - 8/10

Longevity - TBA

Just had a shave with the PSS. Not being a DE blade dude I can only really compare it to my standard SE blade and it stacks up well. It's better than my only other DE blade (Sharks) but it's not night and day. I like'm and if it wasn't for the fact that I've got 200 Sharks already I'd put my hand up for a few of these too. Like the simple, no bullshit packaging. Might be a moot point but things like that work for me. See how it goes in the long run.

I have, today. They're ok, pretty forgiving, not very sharp. No excitement here I'm afraid monsta.
What did you think of the blade performance when compared to an Iridium?

The first shave is always a bit strange until you get the feel of them. During the second shave it will make sense as the blade feedback adjusts your angle of attack.

One of the nice things about the 'plain' wrapping for sure. At least it is not completely what so at least you know what is in it.

Pleased to hear that they gave you a good shave, especially since you are on the SE side of things these days. I'd love to know how they last for you.

-update 1-

2nd shave.

Did a 2 pass - WTG / ATG. Got another nice BBS shave.

Has lost some of its sharpness, I needed to dial the progress right down for the ATG pass as it was quite rough. Skin is a bit irritated.

Will try to go ATG again tomorrow, but I think it won't last much more than that, but can still be used to get further shaves out of.

Just had the second shave. See what you mean about the second shave being different from the first. Had the feeling there was no blade at times. No need for more pressure or anything and still got the desired result. Nice.

Had my 2nd. Two days growth and these blades can't shift it from my chin without 4+ passes.

My mileage varieth.

I've tried a lot of blades. Not as many as monsta, but every time he scans ebay, every blade factory in Russia braces itself for overtime hours and vodka for all.

Most of them are meh. Some are just rubbish. The big brands sell lots for a reason. After trying maybe a dozen or 20 I can remember, and a good few more odds and sods people gave me I've found about 4 I'd use regularly, and only 2 that really stand out. Of those, the Yellows win for me, because they're as sharp as Astra's, but even smoother and more forgiving.

These blades were going to have to do something incredible to impress me, like give me the winning lotto numbers or buy me a steak dinner at the Rockpool. I didn't expect they would, and they didn't disappoint. I found they're a middling blade at a good price - a cheaper Personna. That's my mileage.

What are you running it in Drubs? Have you thrown it into a Fatboy or Slim?

PJ > Glad you saw the same behaviour. I thought I was going mad.

That's his problem. He's only got them new fangled razors. Not like the old ones that'll run on unleaded fuel. The second shave thing was a bit strange. I'd forgotten all about it until I read your initial post again so it wasn't in my head when I started.

I can almost hear the sobs from poor ol' RM.
Almost, but not quite. I think I have worked out the problem, as has PJ.

Merkur HD. I'll throw one in the futur, but I doubt it'll be night and day.
You need a real razor!!!! Do I need to send you over a Slim??

I have a feeling that most of the blades I like do badly in the Merkurs. Throw it in an EJ/Muhle head or a vintage Gillette and I wonder what your response would be then.

Yes, he needs a real DE before he can give any blade a real shake. A freaking HD?? This blade is miles in front of that cruddy thing. :D

OK guys, I've had a week with the Permas now and, well, they're....

...really good. :)
Easily fit into my group of 'keepers', which includes the 7OC Black & Dorco ST-301 at the top (which is where the Permas now sit, too), and then Israeli Reds, Astras, Feathers and 7OC Yellow.
Loaded in my EJ 89L with RazoRock Cacao for lather I've found these VERY easy to work with. Sharp, smooth and long-lasting - 5 shaves so far and will definitely get another great shave out of it tomorrow.
Their only downside, and it's minor, is that similar to the Feathers, there's not a lot of feedback. Certainly more than Feathers, but much less than other blades. I guess that's down to how sharp they are. They just keep on gliding and you don't even know you've nicked yourself until after the rinse.

Easily a 9/10 blade for me.

PermaSharp SS = 9.25/10 (longevity over the Black)
7OC Black = 9/10
ST-301 = 8.75/10 (not as consistent as the Black)
Feather = 8.25/10 (extremely sharp, can be dangerous without care)
7OC Yellow = 7.75/10 (not as smooth as the Black or 301)
Astra SP = 7.5/10 (pretty smooth, but not as sharp as the above - struggles with ATG)
Israeli Red = 7.5/10 (VERY smooth, but not as sharp as even Astras)

I don't like where that is going. I shall have to lodge a complaint to a mod. I know they'll listen.

I have one. I never use it, as any blade in it is shit. I keep it for sentimental reasons.

Send me an EJ then, and I'll let you know.

I might clean up my DE86, I was thinking about selling it since I rarely use it anymore and it is taking up space. Will have a test shave with a new blade and it it doesn't remove 3 layers of skin I will send it over to you for a test.

If that doesn't work it's probably due to one those brushes he keeps experimenting with. He gave his best one away; the drooling, slobbering banjo boar. That's easily fixed though. I know just the place to get another.

Didn't work for me here. I hope you have better luck.

The behaviour around here really is rather ungentlemenly sometimes. [insert smiley of choice to show that this was a tongue in check comment in case any Yanks are reading]
