Got something cool? Non-shaving Acquisitions Thread

seems like I have to come over diving there one day
Met an Aussie diver one day down in the Southern Lakes area.
He was diving in Lake Ohau (inspection work on the dams).
Said he started off with a 3mm wet suit. Hmmm...that's a tad nippy, so he put on a 8mm wet suit.
Hmmm...that's still a tad nippy...so he put on both wet suits. That's 11mm, and he still felt cold.
So...bring your warm gear. I'll wait on shore with a warming whiskey for you.

I guess you have never dived in an NZ cave?
There are some big (BIG) eels in there and if they are in a crappy mood they will have a nibble (and I really mean NIBBLE).
I was actually stalked by a large eel when out fishing (I was about 18 then). The sod get between me and the bank (I was out on a wee finger of gravel). He (it) lifted his head out on to the wee path I had used just so he could size me up (but I saw him). He slid back down and I'm like thinking 'where the hell has that sod gone too'?
I'm looking down into the water at my feet and there he is...coming straight up at me.
I already had a gaff in my hand with the head down in the water, and reflex (panic) action I lifted the gaff straight up and into his head.
Next thing I'm dragged down to my knees with my arm in the water fighting this bloody thing. He was big and powerful.
Long story short...I finally dragged him up and back to the main bank. Stabbed and stomped the sod.
Took him home and we strung him up on a tree. Measured 26" around the head (I did say he was BIG). He was longer than me, so more than 6' long.
Skinned and cleaned him, cut him through across the body into nice thick round 'steaks'.
He was absolutely delicious!
So yeah, there are jaws in NZ caves.
Back where I come from, conger eels commonly come in lengths of 6 to 10' and their mouths are as wide as the rest of their body, and full of very sharp teeth. I used to do salvage diving on wrecks, and those guys can spoil your day when they take your leg off.

I'm still struggling with the thought of an eel over 2 foot at the head. That's not just thicker than my arm that is thicker than the top of my leg and my own head

He was a big sod, and certainly not scared of me. He was obviously eyeing me up as a tasty treat.
I taught a workmate how to fly fish years ago. He went to a West Coast NZ river, and waded quietly along a nice stream casting away.
Next thing had a hard thump on the legs and he had 2 eels attacking him. Luckily was wearing waders, and the eels weren't the same size as my one.
They are aggressive, and large females will take possession of a good pool. They will attack anything that invades their space.
Edit: Found this...

I never win anything..that's the wife's superpower.

But tonight was informed I won a rare plant giveaway I thought I had no chance in. These can fetch upwards of $400 depending on size and with designer pot/stand as well. Easily the most expensive in our collection of 80 plus indoor plants. Stoked...the boys at the pub will be impressed 👌😂

Is that your wife tattoo on her wrist?

Not something I acquired but cool none the less. A double rainbow after a storm this afternoon at home.
Ooh, nice catch. It always gives a good feeling when you catch a hitherto unseen glimpse of home. Like this alien invasion of a paddock near me a while back...

I've found this superb mid-50s General Electric Deluxe Coffee Maker at my usual thrift store. Barely any scratches on it and the inside is almost as clean as a whistle. It has a coffee strength selector and a reheat function that reheats without re-perking or keeps hot without burning the coffee. I did a bit of research and it was priced at 29.50$, back in 1954, which was by no mean a small sum for a coffee maker. It makes a wonderful brew :coffee::)

P.S: Now I need to find a nice Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster to match with it ^.^
