Hmmm, I think I might end up in the Doghouse in January. Seeing all these piggy-wig and horsehair brushes in circulation is making me think beyond my (already ever-expanding) world of synthetics. I might have to start keeping some of my brushes out of sight... My first ever brush was a Kent boar, and I'm beginning to think I might not have properly appreciated what I had.

always worth revisiting. I didn’t think much of my omega boar at all, couldn’t get a decent lather if my life depended on it but now I know it wasn’t the brush, I was the weak link

now I know how to lather it’s actually a very good brush and really enjoy using it

to a much lesser extent the Matilda 2 band. I got not bad lather right away but the last couple times it’s been amazing and the face feel like luxury

my preference without doubt were the synthetic brushes and although I would say these use less soap and produce excellent lather quickly and easily the face feel I get from the boar and badger is much better

give it another try mate, see how you go

btw here is a pic of the brush coming my way, got the blonde not dyed version as shown

Yep, that's the picture I found of the Semogue. A TOB (Thing Of Beauty) indeed. I've learnt, when setting my big SynBad, that I need plenty of loft to allow enough room for lather, and all of the better pig brushes seem to offer that by default. And I've come to like the way they get a little scruffy as they get older.

Excellent! I'm keen to hear what you think. I have the .72 but haven't tried it yet but by the sounds of it I should have went with the .95 for smoothness which does sound odd but I am keen to order from VSHOD again as they were always a pleasure to deal with and amazing.

I have the Aluminum Lupo thanks to VSHOD and I'm never letting it go. It's a great razor for me I just wish they had made an exact version in stainless steel but I'm sure Joe has thought about it so you never know.

I recently bought a Razorock razor with the bulldog handle and actually forgot how nice it is (I got one years ago with the mission razor I think although that may have been a 303 at best) so I think you're in for a treat all around.

made my decision on my new boars

Omega 100098 and Semogue Galahad C3 Premium

The Omega is a top brush and the more you use it the better it will get.
Quick break in: Lather a couple of times with shampoo rinse then stand the brush in a glass with about 2 cm water in the fridge for 24 hours. Repeat the shampoo treatment followed by Tabac lather. Leave the Tabac lather in the brush for a couple of hours. Wash the the brush and vigourously dry the brush on a rough towel. I have actually used an old piece of carpet. Breaking in is actually splitting the very tips of the boar hairs and this procedure just helps speed things long a bit.

Mine has a turned red gum handle turned for me by a friend.

No worry I’ll be doing a thorough review of both plates with different blades, handles etc. especially looking forward to using the wr2 handle

I will def be starting with the 95, can’t wait.. soon as I get back from walking the dog I’ll be getting into it

in regards to the aluminium lupo, I thought it was a 72 but in aluminium, is that not the case?

Yeah the guys at voskhod are fantastic, customer service is excellent

In regards to the aluminum not as far as I know. I have the both and whilst I can't speak for the .72 (haven't used it yet although I have had it since February) the aluminum razor is a very smooth shaver and probably not aggressive enough for most people. I however find it efficient enough particularly as a daily shaver but it probably wouldn't fare too well on a lot of growth.

Here is a scale from Razorock which probably makes more sense but I don't know about these ratings myself. I bought a Wunderbar Slant on its the first or second run and from memory it was pretty darn aggressive and I think it bit me on the lip once (that was my fault though) but I would say its an unforgiving razor, if you F up then you'll certainly find out how badly very quickly. The .95 seems to be above that but from all the reports I have seen and heard it seems to be much more forgiving and much smoother so who knows.

I have about 17 of the razors below but I have never really took much attention to compare the them all which is something I will probably do when I get back into the full swing of things again and settle in on a specific blade for the tests. I'm aiming for it to be minora blades if they agree with me when they arrive.

The 95 lupo was totally forgiving, first shave with it didn’t require much concentration at all and never did I feel it would bite me. Quite the opposite, felt totally smooth and safe even with ATG passes

I personally wouldn’t list it as aggressive at all, maybe mid but smooth. That is the chart I saw too and what made me doubt it and the reason I got the 72. Got a feeling the 72 will be too mild but we’ll see

I don't know if you're a daily shaver but perhaps if the .72 is too mild you could use it as a daily shaver and if you miss a shave you could put the .95 to work. I speak as if this is our only razors when we both know we have at least 200 between the two of us. lol

i shave every day but also chase BBS, tried DFS a couple of shaves but like a flat beer, doesnt hit the spot.

I have also managed to get very close to BBS with the DE89 which is a very mild razor so hopefully the 72 can get me there.

Feeling my face now and still feels fresh and not irritated one bit, so maybe the 95s smoothness will get me over the line..

just did a quick count and only have 13 razors, but dont like that number so either one has to go or i need to get one more in :)

Yeah I believe the DE89 was within my first 5 DE razors and do recall it being a mild shaver. For me it was probably more of a DFS razor but its been many years since I have used it to really compare. My technique has improved substantially since then so it's probably exactly where you place it. I hope so.

I'm probably a slow learner but I feel like there is nothing better than running with one razor for an extended period of time to really refine your skills. I ran with a Rockwell 6S predominantly on a 4/5 blade gap and when I moved on I felt like my technique had improved significantly in regards to consistency. So many razors is probably our biggest enemy to consistent shaving but that's just me.

Man! I am impressed 13 razors!!? That's great man. I have way too many and probably haven't appreciated each of them merely enough. You probably know your 13 razors more intimately than I know any of mine so that definitely is cool.
hahaha, its always one more or lose one, buy two. lol

yeah it cant stay on 13 :)

you should revist your DE89 with a feather and the skills you have learnt along the way. The DE89 used to get me to DFS- and was gonna get rid of it, but because it was my first i just couldnt let it go.

it is still a very mild razor but i can practically get to bbs with technique and a feather. This is why i reckon the 72 should be ok to get bbs, might just need to upgrade to a feather, looking forward to finding out

I only really use a handful of the razors but prob a bit of a hoarder to its hard for me to part with any lol
