Continuously learning the importance of a quality lather. I never thought I'd be able to get more than 2 shaves out of a feather blade, however it seems I was just not preparing properly for my shaves.

Razor: Weber Polished Head on Bulldog Handle
Blade: Dorco Prime Platinum (1)
Brush: Vintage butterscotch Simpson 'The Duke'
Soap/Cream: D R Harris Marlborough
Aftershave: Myrsol Antesol

First impressions here: Dorco Prime Platinum

Preshave: @Draco Noir preshave oil
Razor: Feather AS-D2 (kindly on loan from @Draco Noir )
Blade: Feather(1)
Brush: Vie Long Horse
Soap: The Strop Shoppe Carnaby (thanks again @Draco Noir )
Post Shave: Nivea Balm and Blue Stratos AS
Two pass shave. First use of the Strop Shoppe soap and it is a good quality soap. Lathers well and produces a slick cushiony lather. Very much a leather scent which I find quite pleasant. Always wanted to try the Feather AS-D2 and thanks to @Draco Noir I have my opportunity. First impressions are this is a well designed and precision built instrument. First strokes on my cheek and I have no audio feedback or sense of the feather blade on my face. Adjust the angle a bit and there is a slight audio feedback and a slight sense of blade on face. Finish pass one and rinse off. It may feel mild but is efficient. Complete the second pass and done. This is quite a mild razor but paired with a feather blade is very efficient. Had to search for the correct angle but once found let the razor do its job. Temptation is to apply pressure when you do not feel the blade but this would be a mistake as revealed by the one weeper I had. Lovely smooth shave is the result.

I'm ALIVE and have BOTH ears!
Pre: Proraso Red Balm
Brush: Simpson Vintage Butterscotch - Best
Soap: Cella
Blade/Razor: P1 - 1970's Tanifuji, P2&3 - Slim (4) & Feather
Post: Dickensons Witch Hazel
Scent: Tabac Lotion

Well that was cool! Putting a straight to your face for the first time is a very nervous experience, and I mean the actual first time the blade touches skin. I had read/watched/been told that it will slice you to pieces the second you screw up and pause/press too hard/slide the wrong angle etc etc. I think I may have over inflated the dangers but still, be wary. Not being able to actually see anything because your hand is in the way doesn't help either. I twisted and turned my head to see but in the end just relied on the position of the handle for position/angle information. Managed a complete WTG pass blood free! Even using the left hand for the left side. YAY! I began to think about a XTG but finding the blade poistion/hand angle was weird and time was running out so I called it quits and went with the slim for the remainder. I reckon it went very well actually very good result and no irritation. The Slim is growing on me despite it's lightweight head. Time to throw a the second Dorco in there for a run now I am getting a feel for it.

Cella is a good soap, but I find virtually scentless. After the other top notch soaps I have been using it's rather uninspiring. That just goes to show how great the range of soaps we have is when one a good a Cella gets lost as "meh, not bad".

Dickensons WH....not a fan. I don't like the scent, is very watery and left me feeling like I had just splashed on water, nothing else. Does this stuff actually do anything? I'll stick to Thayer's thanks.

The AS-D2 with a Feather blade is kinda disconcerting isn't it @Osman?

It does have that reputation for mild but is SOOOO well matched it effortless does the job with a minimum of fuss. I'd have to argue that the AS-D2 proves my point about razor/blade combinations. Load another blade into this and it is just an average razor, with a Feather loaded it is top shelf. I forwarded mine onwards largely because I have so many other blades I enjoyed and wanted to keep using. If you are prepared to commit to the Feather blades and the AS-D2 though you will have a winning combination for life.

I do wonder what is it about the razor and/or blade that makes this work so well together and so differently apart. Clearly with the precision of the AS-D2 that we all comment on it is made for the Feather blades - but what exactly makes the difference?

Glad to hear you survived too @Sxot - just you be careful with that blade now ...

I use the ASD2 with Polsivers and find it excellent. So I don't think it's feathers per se, but rather super sharp blades.

OK, I sit corrected. I'd not used it with another 'super-sharp' blade. Good to know :)

The feather blade requires a fair amount of respect but the match in the feather razor is a good balance between mild and efficiency. I am still "faceturbating" four hours later. It gives a remarkably close shave with very little effort. I prefer a sharp blade so this razor /blade combination is a good one for me.

It's my birthday today, so I felt that an absolutely top shelf shave was called for. I selected my favourite, most indulgent items and proceeded from there. An absolutely knock out shave was the result, so the shave gods must be in a birthday kind of mood too :)

A very happy birthday to you my friend and many more to come.:):)

@MrT a term first used by @Mark1966 I do believe.

Ummm, maybe here but not my term. It has a long history on shaving forums and while I agree it is disturbing it also seems kinda apt.

Glad you were able to manage such a good shave at your age ;)

[there, that should have knocked that good mood out of him :)]

That's really good news @Osman - glad to hear you got a great shave from the AS-D2 first time out! I'd be interested to hear what it's like with a Polsilver, as one of our fellow shavers suggested...

Congratulations @Sxot! Your first straight shave is an event you will remember all your life. I well recall mine - various parts of the anatomy tensed up like never before.... You've started with a fine razor - Tanifuji are up there with the best of the best. What model is it exactly? I'd be interested to know...

Anyway, good luck with your journey of discovery - may it be long, pleasant and rewarding mate!
