Dickensons WH....not a fan. I don't like the scent, is very watery and left me feeling like I had just splashed on water, nothing else. Does this stuff actually do anything? I'll stick to Thayer's thanks.

Yes, it's not a balm or a cream, but a splash. Like alcohol based aftershaves.

Definitely doing something. Witch hazel is very good for your skin. Fantastic astringent, and doesn't dry skin out or sting after shaving. And it's quite good at controlling acne if that's an issue. My wife has taken to using it as her nightly toner and thinks it's great (and heaps cheaper than fancy brand toners).

I warned you about the smell... ;) Surprisingly you do get used to it, and it goes away very quickly, so add whatever cologne you want afterwards.

That's really good news @Osman - glad to hear you got a great shave from the AS-D2 first time out! I'd be interested to hear what it's like with a Polsilver, as one of our fellow shavers suggested...

Congratulations @Sxot! Your first straight shave is an event you will remember all your life. I well recall mine - various parts of the anatomy tensed up like never before.... You've started with a fine razor - Tanifuji are up there with the best of the best. What model is it exactly? I'd be interested to know...

Anyway, good luck with your journey of discovery - may it be long, pleasant and rewarding mate!

Thanks for the kind words. As to the blade model, all I can tell you is it's a little over 6/8, hollow ground from around the 1950s possibly earlier. I have to call on @Mark for more info as I never asked the question! @Mark what else can you tell us about this straight?

@MrT I also use it as an astringent after the shave. Smell not great but gone in a couple of minutes and then I can use a cologne or EDP after it. Bonus that it is cheap and available at the local chemist.

Maybe it's doing the job so well I don't notice? I don't know. I seem to get a better face feel from the Thayers. It leaves something behind and probably that is the Aloe Vera. It depends on what you are after I guess. If it's just WH, then Dickensons is great. If you want more of a balm and don't care for adding a second product, then Thayers is probably a better choice. In any case, I now have a bottle of each so I will see how I feel when they're both empty!

@Sxot you have to try the Dickensons for at least a month you can't tell straight away if it's doing the job or not ;) I had Thayers Lemon Witch Hazel Astringent and I still have the bottle as well and I find Dickensons is far cheaper than Thayers ;)

It's my birthday today, so I felt that an absolutely top shelf shave was called for. I selected my favourite, most indulgent items and proceeded from there. An absolutely knock out shave was the result, so the shave gods must be in a birthday kind of mood too :)

Happy birthday my friend - I hope you have a stellar day!

First use of the B&M Night Music, not really sure if the scent is formed but the performance is top notch.
First time I've used a Merkur Blade in anything other than a slant in a very long time. Now I remember why. I did manage to get a decent shave.

Razor: Feather AS-D2(thanks @Draco Noir )
Blade: Feather(2)
Brush: Shavemac 177
Soap: Martin de Candre Fougere
Post Shave: Razorock balm and Fine Fresh Vetiver
Three pass shave. Once you find the angle with the razor your confidence grows so I did a full three pass shave. Wonderful result with no irritation and one small weeper of no consequence. This soap while being the most expensive soap I have ever bought is brilliant. It is full to the brim and a little goes a long way. Face is smooth and smelling nice. What more do you want?

Which KB? The wavy head or the straight headed one, or a combination of the two?
