Shave of the Day Thread - 2018

From the 4 Grooming Dept. soaps I bought, the Magnolia and the Conca D'oro are the standouts in relation to fragrance, and that should not necessarily be taken as an endorsement of the fragrance work employed. The soap base however I really like, it performs excellently as a vegetal soap.

I will admit it does take a bit longer, the blade has to be stropped, the lather worked just right, a routine of hot towels even though it is still 40 "outside".

I laughed when an experieced straight razor shaver said at least 100 shave before you start to get a real feel for angle and blade, but it is all eventually muscle memory.

There is a modicum of fear with every shave and a dose of trepidation as the blade cuts oh so close to the nose where it joins the top lip.

When all is said and done the fear charges the muscles and the trepidation encourages bold moves forward to yet another shave that leaves you wondering what the rest of the shaving community does for fun.

A great shave that has left me contemplating the finer challenges of life :)

Of my latest GD delivery of 3 I have kept 1. I cannot fault the soap base. The scent work on a lot of them IMO is poor, which is a shame.

I mentioned the NEW with an Israeli platinum blade in another thread and after tonights shower I thought "why not? It's been a while". Just did a neck shave, it's so easy it's like cheating with this combo.
I got rid of my favourite NEW head with the red and black set so I pulled a grotty one out the pile. The head was pretty stuffed so I rubbed it back with autosol until almost copper - rather have something 'clean and smooth' than too patchy. The guard is like original gold though and a quick wipe did no harm.
Found some old eshave soap that worked suprisingly well.

I might look into replating it one day as I'll never part with my old ball end NEW

E:
I'd trade it in for a solid handle 3 pce Brit NEW any day of the week, but don't tell my ball end that because the handle might start cracking ;) I do have a brit NEW but it came with a bent tooth and I broke it trying to straighten it. I brought it out recently to see if usable/sell-able but it's now got a bent tooth right in the middle! How did that happen in storage? Brit NEWs look very nice but seems like the comb/ teeth are made of cheese unlike the US ones

Razor: Merkur 34C HD
Blade: Astra Platinum
Brush: Vintage Certifyd synthetic revamp
Soap: Saponificio Varesino 70th Anniversary
Post: APR Suitable Attired Gentleman AS splash
Fragrance: Acqua di Gio EDT

Happy Friday, gentlemen!!!
Hmm. I've not touched my 34c in almost a year. It was my first DE razor - I now have 8.
My technique has changed so much in that time that I'm wondering if I should pull it out of the drawer.
What do you think? Is it worth another crack?

For sentimental reasons & ease of use alone, I would reach for my 34C at least once in a month. It was my first DE razor too & I never had any nicks or weepers out of it...my Merkur Futur is another story altogether :nailbiting:

@lerenau if you been wet shaving for more than 6 months and you may have master your shaving techniques long enough, go and grab the 34C you'll be surprised you may received a very comfortable shave.

*Note don't get mentholated aftershave in an eye (or any other eye) when in a rush.. f#@ken stung like a biache and couldn't irrigate it out until I washed my hands while blind. Best morning wakeup in weeks :ROFLMAO::cry:

I definitely prefer the yellow plate for the Starling, not as smooth but closer. Glad to have this razor, not a Streamline but a good attempt at a modern SE at a reasonable price with the bonus of two plate options.
