Post-sabbatical thoughts of 2021 sabbatees?

Hi Errol.. I know you dont like the rocca at all, but i find it to be one of the best razors I own but from your point of view what do you like about the 72? have you tried the lupo 95? after @SpeedyPC comments Im a bit put off from its mildness

I hate comparing anything to the Rocca, I could not get any efficiency out of it whereas everyone else sings it praises about how aggressive it is. I’ve only just started the review so it’s early days with the Lupo 72. Smooth as and I’m going to call its efficiency about that of the Wolfman WR1 standard .61

Merkur 34C/G efficiency aggression is 0.71mm

Lupo 72 efficiency aggression is 0.72mm

RR Game Changer 84 efficiency aggression is 0.84mm

Lupo 95 efficiency aggression is 0.95mm

Efficiency doesn't necessarily mean blade gap as some DEs shave super smooth even with high blade gaps, such as the WR2: 0.95mm - 1.65mm but smooth even in the higher gaps. Whereas WR1 is the opposite with higher gaps equaling more blade feel and a harsher shave. As I've read.

From experience I find certain DEs shave differently depending on the blades used as recently noticed in my SOTDs where as a cheapo OC head can be super efficient with a smoother blade and miss stubble with a sharper blade!?

Also, a few examples of blade gaps that are deceptive in performance:

Timeless Bronze OC 0.78mm is very similar to the dreaded R41 due to the OC and blade exposure.
Smart Helix Apollo 0.50mm Mild Plate is more efficient than the DE89 or 34C.
New Timeless Slim plates 0.50mm are the most efficient version that Timeless sell but how so if they also offer a 0.95mm gap...?

Also the Rocca shaves differently depending on the blades as when using a Wizamet or Yellow's I mostly get BBS but other blades I get mild irritation or missed spots on my chin with DFS-DFS+ results...?
For that reason I sympathies with those who found/find the Rocca too much or a disappointment but for me its a great balance of efficiency, smoothness and blade feel... YMMV

That's why I'm curious to see how the Lupo .95 compares to the WR2 .95 or Timeless .95 as all the same blade gap but different price point...?

See that's what I was worried about as from my testing the WR1 0.61mm gap was holy grail whereas the WR2 0.95mm & 1.10mm gaps left me wanting more???

I've pretty much stopped looking at blade gaps, as they often don't really translate into anything meaningful, or even useful given that the dimensions of blades vary by quite a lot. A thicker blade will give you a wider gap to the actual cutting edge, and obviously a wider (front to back) blade will give more exposure. I never got around to measuring the gap on the Rocca, which I consider quite mild but at the same time efficient with the right blade. I guess I've simplified my life by specialising in AC razors, since there's a range of 4 really excellent blades, plus one "good" blade commonly available (I've never tried the Kai Captain Sharpblade, and might never do so). But with my SE razors, I can have as mild or aggressive (and always efficient) a shave as I need with just this selection.

from memory i didnt mind the standard gap in the WR1 so the 72 Lupo may work, but I might well end up with the lupo 95.. good thing i have plenty of time to make up my mind up :)

Hey @rhodes96 and @Gargravarr see below

Saw that, and it means nothing. Sabbatical is broken. I expect to see a sabbatical failure badge next month.

@SpeedyPC when do you think @Gargravarr will stumble?
Not going to happen. I'm happy with what I've got. Sure, there are a few things I'm interested in, as I mentioned, but I'm in no hurry. Open to small wagers :p

Wouldn't hurt to retrieve the wager I lost to @rhodes96...

That's OK, if I bomb out on my sabbatical, my sig will say so in glorious day-glo characters for all to see. :p

Actually, I'm really enjoying it. As predicted, it has freed up more money for whisky. So probably not the best thing for my health...:dead:

Wow who knew my quest for a Sabbatical would garner so much interest!
For the record, if you recall P&C stopped recording "Official Sabbatical" from 2019 so I undertook a "2019 Unofficial Sabbatical!" which I stuck to all of that year barring a PIF from @Nico during a CBR Meet Up.
Again there is NO Official P&C Approved Sabbatical in 2021 so I commenced an Unofficial Sabbatical! as indicated in my signature block.
If I am unsuccessful and go ahead with the Flexi Group Buy arranged by @alfredus then I will happily amend my signature block to reflect this.
In the future I'll stick to keeping things private and limit my contributions to SOTD posts, Meet Ups and Charitable Auction Threads. :finger:

...
Maybe because there were so few of us? Don't let it bother you, they're just having fun. If I bomb out, I fully expect a thorough ribbing (not to mention lots of GIFs from @SpeedyPC) and I'm happy to provide the entertainment. I'm not running for office, so my ego doesn't need stroking. :D

A great thing about sabbaticals is that they give you lots of time to change your mind. For the last couple of months I've been admiring the Alpha Albert brush, but now I'm going cool on it, since I found another picture of it that shows it in a different light, and I'm not so sure about how much I like the way they've done the area where the knot joins the handle. So now I'm looking at Wild West Brushworks since having seen @MadFlava81's great SOTD pic from today.
