Shave of the Day 2015

Razor: 1912
Blade: Gem
Brush: S10108
Soap: Haslinger Schafmilch
Aftershave: F/Extra

Here we go again. Another razor where it was clear by the end of the first stroke that I was using a stone cold classic. I was clean shaven after a single pass but I did an XTG as well. Those of you that haven't tried the mighty 1912, do yourselves a favour and do so ASAP. Thanks go to @boldsworth for the razor and @bald as for the blade!
What a great adventure you are on. Each SE razor brings some new aspect to the shave. It is hard to quantify the differences each model has. Some are minute while others are dramatic. There is definitely an SE for any wet shaver.

Brush: 1305
Lather: Castle Forbes Lavender
Razor: AS-D2
Blade:
Feather (4)
After Shave: Emulsion

Went out for dinner last night so needed a second shave - remember my morning's straight only shave left patchwork. So standing in front of the mirror, I found my face feeling very, very sorry for itself (tender) from the morning's shave. No visible irritation but the skin was hypersensitive to the brush and blade. Noting this I still ended up a fine shave indeed. Only two passes but I ended with the business.

Standouts were the Castle Forbes. First time using it and as I loaded the brush I heard echoes of folks who bang on and on and on and on and on about the lather. Applied the charge to my face and then started adding water to the brush for the build. But what formed on my face wasn't a lather it was A LATHER! So the pundits were on the money. Not only about sporting a rich silky 'looking like the Cella guy' luscious whiteness, but the slickness of the Castle Forbes lather was superb. I'd hasten to say one of the slickest things I've used. So, although having some nasty sounding ingredients this Scottish cream delivers.

The other standout, was the very reason I can't really comment on the post-shave face feel of the Castle Forbes. After this shave - noting it followed activity on an already angry face - my skin was feeling very there. It was raw, very raw. The Feather didn't hurt it more but it's still metal over skin so....but anyway I am a man and I ate the pain and Myrsol's Emulsion helped calmed everything right down. So much so this morning I feel I could have another round with the straight. I won't though as we all need a bit of a rest.

2nd shave with the French Gillette new traitee. Felt better but still not quite the same as the SS vintage blades. No real sting when I put the as splash on.

Anyone want to try a couple?

Meantime:
Razor: E1 Fatboy (dialled back to 5)
Blade: Wilkinson, modern (3)
Brush: Smog 730HD
Soap/Cream: Simpsons Lavender & Vetiver cream (final)
Post: Pinaud Virgin Islands Bay Rum (courtesy @SydBJW)

Opened up the Simpsons tin and knew this was the last shave out of it. Made it a decent distance in the end and I am happy for the experience to try it. Many thanks to @Mark Watterson for providing the review sample of which I posted here. I will be buying another tin (possibly a different scent) to replace it in the near future, and would recommend you adding a tin to any order direct from Simpsons to help amortise postage costs.

So, now that it is all gone, how do I finish the shave? Slather planet face in Virgin Islands Bay Rum. Cheers Brendan, the other half got very sniffy on me afterwards. Not sure I am a big fan of it but she likes it.[/QUOTE]

Glad your better half liked it @Monsta_AU. My wife had me wash it off straight away when she finished coughing :). I have an almost full bottle if you want more, always good to have something the better half likes.

Great to see a maker who doesn't skimp on the content. Only other I've seen who honours their customers in this way is Martin de Candre...who give you as much as the jar can take.

Eww @SydBJW. Hope you checked your back pockets to make sure the scousers didn't nick anything from you on your way out of the stadium.

Committed to a straight shave only today. No falling back on the DE to neaten up the wake. Healthy way to shave as I usually give up too early. Today was my first S-N under the chin and neck. Tell you what my sphincter was 10x tighter than the skin on my face at the time. Fair bit of resistance, fair bit of sound (feedback) but no cuts and (so far) no irritation (10 minutes post-shave). Would I go to work like this? Not unless I was looking for psych leave (Clinger-style), but I'd say the shave is 85% there. Be interested to see what the folks in town today make of the patchwork.

Lessons Learned:
1. I think the wall I'm hitting with my straight shaves right now are mainly psychological. I need to come to grips with the louder feedback and the greater resistance (than a DE).
2. Mighty glad I went ambidextrous early. All things left still feel odd, but less so and mighty handy in some places.
3. The KEEN is fine - as it seems no more tuggy than the freshly honed GD - I think it's more about #1

Well done Stillsy! (y):)(y)

The very first word in your post pretty much sums up my feelings about it - as soon as you really commit to shaving with the straight/kamisori, progress seems to come more quickly. I've been going through most of the things you describe - wimping out during the shave and finishing up with a DE, having to live with a "patchwork" face until tomorrow...

One of my most useful takeaways (which may help you) is the value of figuring out the best ways of stretching the skin to shave different parts of the face. For me, the resistance and potential for nicking oneself are definitely less if I have the relevant bit of face nice and taut for the razor stroke.

Like you, I have had some irritation from using the kamisori. It's quite different from the irritation I get from a DE, which usually involves reddening of the skin for a couple of days. I don't get any visible symptoms from it, but my face sure feels a tad tender post-shave from time to time. I think it's related to making a poor pass with the razor and having to go back over that spot to clean up. I think this happens less if I get the skin stretched nicely before making the razor stroke, but I have moments when I wonder if I'll ever figure it all out and get on top of it...

Have you tried using pre-shave oil with the straight? I notice that a few of the really experienced straight users like @razorguy use it. I think I'll give it a try for a few days and see if it makes a difference.

Anyway, congrats on progress so far and good luck going forward :)

How was the @bald as soap mate?

Razor: 1912
Blade: Gem (1)
Brush: S10108
Soap: Haslinger Schafmilch
Aftershave: Proraso Green

Lovely 2.5 passer. Very comfortable and pleasurable. I went for a double splash of PG after the shave and my face is still really cool half an hour later. This is pure hedonism.

I had a very comfortable SE shave this morning using my GEM - Jewel with a new blade. Soap was my Lavender and Lime with a Plisson brush.

Mate when you a massive Liverpool fan, YNWA. Actually out of all the cities in the UK I went to, I liked Liverpool best, great city and great football team.

Looking at the cream, it is going to take a while to get through. I believe it is a vegan cream, not sure who actually makes it.

Pre-Shave: Hot shower and exfoliating scub
Razor: Gillette Tech Ball end
Blade: Personna (2)
Brush: Men's biz badger
Soap: B&M Latha thanks @Monsta_AU
Post-shave: Witch Hazel and Arbonne post shave balm

Took @Monsta_AU's advice and had two shaves in a row this time. Loving the Latha so far. Used the Tech which I find nice and mild so perfect for a second day in a row shave.

How was the @bald as soap mate?
Seriously great. Reviews it a couple shaves ago - sorry on my mobile and moving, so...

Glide: top, can compete with the best
Cushion: fantastic, maybe Mike's is a bit better but can compete with every other one
Post-shave: great, some of the top ones are better (Mike's, Haslinger,...), but again can compete with the rest, and definitely no drying out!
Scent: mine :D love the lavender kick - could have a bit more lime.

Would buy if I could ;)
