Shave of the Day - 2024

SOTD Sunday 25 August
  • Razor Gillette Slim Adjustable (5) J4
  • Blade Feather Hi-Stainless
  • Pre-Shave Tricare Goats Milk
  • Brush Vulfix Pure Badger
  • Cream Proraso Yellow – Wood & Spice
  • Post Shave Thayers Witch Hazel - Unscented
  • Aftershave Brut Splash
  • Balm Nivea – Sensitive Pro - Post Shave Balm

The Morning Shave.
The Feather Hi-Stainless blade was in my 1964 Gillette Slim Adjustable today.

After missing my shave yesterday, it was another opportunity to use the Feather Hi-Stainless.
I thought I would be a little indulgent today, with the Vulfix Pure Badger and the Proraso Wood & Spice.
Absolutely love the Wood & Spice scent. Quite strong but a great scent.
Not sure if this has been completely discontinued now or if some stock is still available. I use no more than 1gram of shave cream so these last me a few years.

The Feather performs amazing with a couple of days growth, so smooth and comfortable.

Can anyone identify the watch?
I have this Proraso. Really like the scent. I have used that maybe 2-3 times. Performance is not bad but not great (unless it will go better with more lathering). Similar to standard proraso.

26 August (SR shave No. 1712)
I honed this much coveted, rare and sort-after Gold Dollar 66 from its factory edge to shave-ready yesterday using my standard sequence. The soap this week is VI-John Classic (India).

Chinese Whetstones
400 grit to get the bevel surfaces to line up with the (taped) spine
1k grit (w/o tape) to get to near to bevel set
3k grit to set bevel
8k grit to start refining
Lapping Films (for refining)
5µm (not really required as it is about equivalent to the 8k whetstone)
3µm
1µm
Diamond Pasted Balsa (for finishing)
0.5µm
0.25µm
0.1µm
0.1µm (hanging)
The end result was a very fine and keen edge.

Been a bit since I last posted, this was a shave with my new kill soap “Secret Source”, an Aussie product but I don’t recall where I got this from and don’t know the ingredients but I think it’s a Tallow based soap, scent is “Lime, Peppermint, Spearmint & Orange” and some “Tallow” base scent, it made a lovely rich, creamy, slick & dense lather. This was a normal 3-pass shave with the Shield Ti AC & Feather Proguard blade, it felt quite blade feely, so shaved close to riding the cap, resulted in a DFS with just a couple weepers and some minor irritations at side of mouth.

THE GEAR:
  • Pre Shave: Tri-Care Goats Milk & Glycerine Soap from ALDI [A]
  • Brush: Billy Goat “Picasso” with 26/56 Synthetic 2Band [A]
  • Soap: Secret Source - Lime, Peppermint, Spearmint & Orange [A]
  • Bowl: Yaqi White Plastic “Duke”
  • Razor: Shield Ti AC2 & SE handle (49gm with blade, blade gap of 1.15 and 0.12 exposure)
  • Blade: Feather AC Proguard, made in Japan (1)
  • Astringent: Jennai Body Care - Aloe Vera Gel with Witch Hazel & Vitamin E [A]
  • Balm: Secret Source - Lime, Peppermint, Spearmint & Orange (a little oily, no alcohol) [A]
  • After Shave: none
  • Moisturiser (Later): MooGoo Natural Full Cream - Hydrate [A]
[A] = Australian Product

26/08/24 Evening
  • Razor Gillette Super Speed Flare tip 1955/A1
  • Blade Vintage Waltham shave 2
  • Pre-Shave Hot Shower
  • Brush Synthetic B&B Chubby
  • Cream Mitchells Wool Fat
  • Aftershave Clubman bay rum
Hi all a good shave this evening with the super speed load with the waltham blade.
I touched it up on a vintage DE blade hone witch were made for the carbon blades.
In the days when DE blades weren't as cheap as they are today compared with other day to day items.
I'm not sure if the hone or the razor made the difference as in my opinion
the super speed is a much better razor for me than the ball end tech with this old blade.
1 pass WTG and ATG no touch up needed.
A bit of bay rum and all done ( My misses hates the smell of this stuff I guess she's not alone.)
A drop of 3 in 1 oil on the blade and I will try again some other time.
Cheers All.
