Shave of the Day - 2024

SOTD Saturday 17 August
  • Razor Gillette Adjustable FatBoy G1 (5)
  • Blade Gillette Minora Stainless (3)
  • Pre-Shave Tricare Goats Milk
  • Brush Synthetic
  • Cream Jack The Barber - Sandalwood
  • Post Shave Thayers Witch Hazel - unscented
  • Aftershave Brut Splash
  • Balm Nivea – Sensitive Post Shave Balm
The Morning Shave.

Not quite a morning shave today, closer to afternoon.
After a long walk with Poppy an American Bulldog a shower & shave was a welcome refresh.

The Gillette Minora Stainless was in my 1961 Gillette Adjustable FatBoy today.
3rd use on this blade, full head & face shave.

The Jack the Barber cream whipped into a very soft creamy lather with plenty of protection.
The shave was effortlessly smooth with no weepers.
The Sandalwood scent is quite mild. It was a little hot out today, so decided on the Thayers Facial Toner. Very refreshing post shave.

For the animal lovers, here is a picture of Poppy.

Poppy looks like one very well-looked-after puppy :)

I haven’t been shaving for a little while, since I had another eye surgery again and had another retinal detachment failed on my left eye, this is the fifth surgery and if my retina failed again I will be blind for life in my left eye.

The specialist told me that my right eye retina will fail any time in the future, and I’ll be completely blind for life and there no point having surgery on my right eye.

Therefore as I was born 3 and half weeks premature with cerebral palsy, profound hearing loss, there is no point me living anymore. IF my right eye retina failed any time in the future, I will be put to sleep end of life, there’s no point me living anymore been totally blind, profoundly deaf and cerebral palsy all at the same time, it’s very stressing and on my whole family. Sorry I haven’t been myself for a while since my first surgery.

Sorry to hear about this!

For the eye issues, if you haven't already, consider trying n-acetyl-carnosine eye drops.

I've used these for various family and friends with eye issues and they've had good results.

Brush: H.L. Thäter 3-band Silvertip Badger
Soap: RazoRock Mudder Focker

Blade: Vintage NOS Schick Krona Super Chromium (2)
Post: Thayers Cucumber Witch Hazel, RazoRock Mudder Focker After Shave Lotion
Scent: Acca Kappa 1869 EdP

I have been using the Schick Type O exclusively for the past month. I find it both mild and very efficient with a 3-pass BBS shave lasting for approximately ten hours. The twin blades are expensive, but they just keep going and going which makes their initial cost comparable to premium DE blades. The Maggard's 70/30 Badger/Boar knot is only a week old and not yet broken in. I have the loft set at 57mm and it has lots of backbone and scritch. Need to use it for another month or so before I decide to keep it or replace the knot.

Razor: Valet Auto Strop
Blade: Valet
Soap: Mitchells
Brush: Old Horse Hair
A/S : Clubman Bay Rum
This Morning I thought I haven't used a Valet Auto for a while so I Stropped the blade.
With the Valet Strop (the same blade I have used many times) did the shower thing
and went through the routine that's were things went south!
Reason 1 poorly stropped blade.
Reason 2 poor technique
Reason 3 lack of use
So after struggling on with the grain and nicking myself 5 times I give in.
Washed up threw on the clubman to stop my face stinging and that was that.
You can see in the pics the blade is like a knife edge. ( never looked closely at the old straights I had to compare)
And never used one.
I will defiantly have to get some practice up as the Valet mostly gave me a good shave. (And dig out a fresh blade)
Cheers
