Which Hoshi are you using @Sxot? Folding + symmetrical = 8000 or 6500 afaik.

You are definitely correct about the "hard" part - Hoshis are about the hardest razors I've honed. They seem to respond best to softer Jnats for all the midrange work, but still expect to take plenty longer than usual to do a good sharpening job. Getting the bevel set right is critical - suggest you kill the edge completely before bevel set. That way you will be certain the edge is yours and not a false edge. If your bevel looks wide, you may need to tape the spine to tweak the angle a bit and make sure you're working on "the edge of the edge". If you go the tape route, use it for the entire process, changing it after the bevel setting work because it will have abraded and thinned a bit.

And yes, that half hollow grind really needs a very sharp edge to deliver an irritation free shave. Good luck - I hope you manage to get it sorted, because a great shave is certainly possible :)

Thanks for your thoughts @Draco Noir. It's the 8000 - symmetrical.
I always kill the edge on a new blade to make sure I am starting on new steel, and my Jnat is quite hard too although I do have a soft Nagura (cut from another stone) that I use after the Chosera so on the money there - I think. I had put 10 strokes on crox before the last shave, even though doing so admits poor honing IMHO. Last night I did another 20 strokes on crox, but this time with (more) pressure (it's harder steel after all!). Shave was very good after that (will post SOTD later today when I can get a pic and more details). When I get bored/time again I think I will go back to the 1k with two or maybe three layers of tape. Before I do, I plan to measure the blade to see what the angle is but going by the width of the spin, it is definitely on the acute side. Then again, my purist side says no - it is the way it is because that is the geometry the maker intended.

Brush: Sterling 22mm synth
Soap: Shaver Heaven - Summer Breeze
Razor: Kamisori western grind (on loan from @Draco Noir
Post shave: Alum, Shaver Heaven - Summer Breeze Balm

I was a bit tired after work today so I almost put off shaving till tomorrow but I could hear the Kamisori calling and I thought I just need to HTFU (harden the f#%! up) and just do it. I planned on just doing a WTG pass only and leave it at that.

As soon as I picked up the Kami everything seemed to change and I was glad I made myself shave. The WTG pass went so well and I felt like I was in the zone, it just felt like the right time to try an ATG pass. I avoided a couple of tricker parts of my neck but managed to do everywhere else including my chin! I made sure I was maintaining the right angle and I ended up with the closest shave yet. BBS apart from areas on the neck I avoided for the ATG pass and no nicks or cuts!

I'm not planning tempting fate with more ATG passes anytime soon but today it just felt right to throw one in. Sixth shave in and things seem to be progressing nicely.

Pre: GFT lime skin food (50% used mark)
Brush: RVSM 2 band 'Mandarb'
Soap: MdC
Razor: iKon B1 OSS
Blade: GSB
Post: alum, witch hazel, Myrsol Agua Balsamica

Used the wet method this time to load up and lather up. Much better results than before. Best lather I've produced out of MdC.

Good lather is good shave. Win win.

Or slice your nose off.

That would be a surprise wouldn't it? ;)

(that was my first thought to @saku39's suggestion too - he doesn't understand the depth of my stupidity!)

Congratulations @saku39, that is a real landmark and an amazing effort. There'll be no stopping you now :)

Very pleasant two pass shave tonight definitely DFS+. I am still testing a Coticule I got recently so honed one razor on a Jnat and the other on the Coticule. At this stage I'm not buying into the mystique of the Coticule however although the razor didn't feel as sharp as the Jnat the actual shave was certainly as good. Not feeling as sharp and not being as sharp may well be inconsequential. No burn and no blood loss with a really close and comfortable shave.

Razors: Boris and his brother Ivan [the Russian straight twins]
Soap: My clone with lanolin of the pseudo MDC formula.
Brush: Chinese horse that no longer smells like a stable.

Stupid is as stupid does and I know stupid, I embody it! :ROFLMAO:

Congratulations @saku39, that is a real landmark and an amazing effort. There'll be no stopping you now :)

Thank you Sensei @Draco Noir! I can only put down my progress to your advice and expertise. :D

Pre: Blind Barber Facewash
Brush: Simpson Duke 2 Best
Soap: B&M 42
Razor: iKon DLC Slant 'The Dark Knight'
Blade: PSI(2)
Post: alum, witch hazel, The Stray Whisker balm

My first outing with the 42 and overwhelmed. Incredibly slick and one of my favourite scents so far (floral and sweet tea, it's what I imagine the old lady's house in 'The Ladykillers' to smell like)
I'm sticking with the Dark Knight as I want some practise with the slant. Only one small weeper and a great BBS.

Razor: - Rockwell 6s #2
Blade: - Polsilver Super Iridium (2)
Brush: - SOC 2-Band Badger
Soap/Cream: - Nivea Sensitive Shaving Cream
Post Shave: - Alum Block / T.N. Dickinson Witch Hazel Astringent / Natio Maximum Razor Relief Healing Lotion

A quick 2 pass shave with plate #2 again since I tried a #1 and it didn't shave very well ATG, I was 100% right from the very start first time using the Rockwell 6s and I've decided to skip plate #1 and go straight to #2 and finally got used the heavy razor shaving WTG & ATG with out any issue or balance of this razor best of all no nicks, cuts and irritation (y);)

Also I will be using plate #3 in my next shave (y)

Razor - Schick Krona
Blade - Gillette Super Silver Orange V-3 2000 @3
Soap - Proraso Sandalwood
Aftershave - Pinaud Clubman Virgin Island Bay Run

Classic 3 pass for a BSS result. The Super Silver is still silky smooth, noticeably smoother on the moustache area during the ATG. Good feedback from both alum bloc and AF. A shave like this makes me want to shave a second time :)

Gillette Slim
Feather Blade
Epsilon 2 Band Badger
B&M Le Petit Chypre

Lately I am struggling to get super slick lather with the brush. I try & start with it completely dry & then slowly add water as I am loading but that doesn't seem to work?

The lather on the puck starts looking like it's got too much water but when I apply the brush to my face it's a bit dry.

Might try with a wetter brush & go from there next time.

On a more positive note, given the cooler weather my brushes are taking a little bit longer to try so it's a perfect excuse to start looking for more brushes!

Preshave: PAA Ice soap and Proraso Red preshave cream
Razor: Standard
Blade: Polsilver SI
Brush: Simpsons Commodore X2
Soap: Razorock XXX
Post Shave: Dickinsons Witch hazel and Fine Platinum and Pure Insurrection II
Lovely two pass shave with a small clean up under the chin. The Razorock is an easy soap to lather and this is a very pleasant scent which could be a bit stronger. Provides good protection and has a good post shave. Finished with the Fine Platinum AS splash and then matched it with the Pure Insurrection II EDT.
