Not as sharp as Polsilvers or GSB but very smooth for me. Remember YMMV when it comes to blades but they are quite cheap.@Osman what's the Rapira Swedish Supersteel feels blades like during you're shaves, as I only used GSB & PSI
Which Hoshi are you using @Sxot? Folding + symmetrical = 8000 or 6500 afaik.
You are definitely correct about the "hard" part - Hoshis are about the hardest razors I've honed. They seem to respond best to softer Jnats for all the midrange work, but still expect to take plenty longer than usual to do a good sharpening job. Getting the bevel set right is critical - suggest you kill the edge completely before bevel set. That way you will be certain the edge is yours and not a false edge. If your bevel looks wide, you may need to tape the spine to tweak the angle a bit and make sure you're working on "the edge of the edge". If you go the tape route, use it for the entire process, changing it after the bevel setting work because it will have abraded and thinned a bit.
And yes, that half hollow grind really needs a very sharp edge to deliver an irritation free shave. Good luck - I hope you manage to get it sorted, because a great shave is certainly possible
Thanks for your thoughts @Draco Noir. It's the 8000 - symmetrical.
I always kill the edge on a new blade to make sure I am starting on new steel, and my Jnat is quite hard too although I do have a soft Nagura (cut from another stone) that I use after the Chosera so on the money there - I think. I had put 10 strokes on crox before the last shave, even though doing so admits poor honing IMHO. Last night I did another 20 strokes on crox, but this time with (more) pressure (it's harder steel after all!). Shave was very good after that (will post SOTD later today when I can get a pic and more details). When I get bored/time again I think I will go back to the 1k with two or maybe three layers of tape. Before I do, I plan to measure the blade to see what the angle is but going by the width of the spin, it is definitely on the acute side. Then again, my purist side says no - it is the way it is because that is the geometry the maker intended.
Impressive @saku39 !
you may just suprise yourself!
Or slice your nose off.
Brush: Sterling 22mm synth
Soap: Shaver Heaven - Summer Breeze
Razor: Kamisori western grind (on loan from @Draco Noir
Post shave: Alum, Shaver Heaven - Summer Breeze Balm
I was a bit tired after work today so I almost put off shaving till tomorrow but I could hear the Kamisori calling and I thought I just need to HTFU (harden the f#%! up) and just do it. I planned on just doing a WTG pass only and leave it at that.
As soon as I picked up the Kami everything seemed to change and I was glad I made myself shave. The WTG pass went so well and I felt like I was in the zone, it just felt like the right time to try an ATG pass. I avoided a couple of tricker parts of my neck but managed to do everywhere else including my chin! I made sure I was maintaining the right angle and I ended up with the closest shave yet. BBS apart from areas on the neck I avoided for the ATG pass and no nicks or cuts!
I'm not planning tempting fate with more ATG passes anytime soon but today it just felt right to throw one in. Sixth shave in and things seem to be progressing nicely.
That would be a surprise wouldn't it?
(that was my first thought to @saku39's suggestion too - he doesn't understand the depth of my stupidity!)
Congratulations @saku39, that is a real landmark and an amazing effort. There'll be no stopping you now
