Straight razor shaving for Dummies :)

the bamboo = Rough translation of the Japanese brand name of a folding style hybrid Kamasori razor owned by @khun_diddy .
Kamasori razor= A traditional Japanese razor that normally doesn't have scales.
scales=Narrow attached cover that a hinged razor folds into to protect the blade and the user. Also provides balance to the blade when extended for shaving.
straight off the Translucent Arkansas = Translucent Arkansas is the brand/type of final hone used to refine the shaving edge and with this razor no additional tratment including leather stropping was used.

Did you check the edge after the ding under your loupe?= Did you look at the shaving edge close up with a magnifyer after accidentally hitting it on the sink.
hopefully it isn't damaged=hopefully it isn't damaged

I gave your GD66 a dose of Translucent Arkansas, linen and then leather.= I finished the Gold Dollar model 66 with a Translucent Arkansas finishing stone followed by stropping on stretched linen and leather.

The other GD300 had a final fling on CrOx, linen and leather=The Gold dollar model 300 after some honing on stone was finished on CrOx, which is a Chrome Oxide power in a wax binder rubbed on a linen strop. A few laps on CrOx and linen can add further keenness to an edge. After the CrOx on linen the blade is stropped on linen and leather.

Remember that one was finished on 8k synthetic to see how far it will improve when you take to it with your Jnat.=The Gold dollar model 300 was honed from an initial bevel, the standard sharp edge of a straight razor and then refined to a smoother edge by using multiple strokes on an 8k Synthetic hone. This is normally half way through the progression of synthetic honing/sharpening stones. @khun_diddy has a most delightful selection of Japanese honing stones so we took the edge on the GD300 [see above for clarification] to a condition that might shave but could easily be improved with his stones.

your Jnat=Japanese natural waterstone - something I don't have.
delightful selection=I feel I'm coming down with H.A.D. being in close proximity to these Japanese natural waterstones - something I don't have.
H.A.D.=Hone Acquisition Disorder - something I might have.

:) Hope that helps.

Steve

@bald as - I think you made your point in the first paragraph or two. The underlying point though, is whether SOTD is the appropriate place for a relatively personal, highly technical discourse on honing Kamisoris. I am undoubtedly guilty of it myself at times, but it isn't really inclusive is it?

True on all counts probably BUT @bald as - gee I got a chuckle out of that :)

Hopefully others did as well and were not too ticked off BUT ...

BOT :)

Preshave: PAA Ice preshave soap
Razor: Edwin Jagger DE89 with Windrose handle
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
Brush: Semogue 1305
Soap: Xpec original
Post Shave: Natio Calming AS balm and Alt-Innsbruck
Three pass shave for a no irritation shave. The Xpec is a serviceable shaving cream that does the job, not an outstanding performer but ok. The Nation balm is quite a good balm with a citrus scent and a little goes a long way, and you should only use a small amount. Absorbs easily to a non greasy feel. The wife is loving the Alt-Innsbruck. Bonus.

Face Wash : Musgo Real Lime Menthol Glycerin Soap
Pre-Shave : Myrsol Emulsion
Brush : Shavemac
Soap : eShave Orange Sandalwood Shave Cream
Razor : Brucke 13/16" Straight
After Shave : Argan Oil, Floid Vigoroso

Another maiden shave - this time, a beautiful 13/16" Solingen Steel razor by Brucke. The razor seemed softer than most of my Japanese razors when honing it, and this seemed to be born out by the shave it delivered - soft, round and very comfortable. And this without any sacrifices in the efficiency department : 2 very easy passes to a near BBS result. The eShave cream is looking very likely to be the first product to be fully finished around here in ages. It's funny, I don't like creams much as a rule, but the scent of this one is simply too good to ignore. A liberal splash of Menthol Enhanced Floid Vigoroso finished off a very pleasant shave.

Our one and only @Lifes a Peach is back from his island paradise holiday - I wonder if he has any exotic islander shaving techniques or products to entertain us with?? :p

Pre-Shave: Occams pre-shave soap, cold water
Razor: Wolfman WR1-SB with WRH2
Blade: Voskhod (1)
Brush: Rudy Vey Shavemac 2-band Silvertip
Lather: Mystic Waters The Brown Windsor
Post-shave: Alum, Barrister & Man Kyovu Original, South Australian Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

In my quest for the perfect lather today, I decided to use some bottled water. I just wanted to check, it the water hardness really makes such a big difference. I just used ~125ml to soak the brush and bloom the soap. I used the soaking water to wet my face, but subsequently washed it with tap water. I kept the bloom water and used to for the lather building process.

Unfortunately it is true - with this soap the water did made a huge difference. Not it the actual outcome, but loading was much faster (and I can only speculate, but I guess I used less product) and the the saddest part: face lathering (my favourite part of the shave) was over in no time. I felt a bit cheated and decided to lather on a bit, although everything was already shiny and slick :D :D :D

Anyway, will keep some distilled water in the house from now on, for those days, when I'm in a hurry...

The picture reflects the weather here - FANTASTIC!!! It's nice and cool and the people on the construction site next door couldn't work either - so win win (y)

From Fiji With Love

Thanks for the warm welcome back, @Draco Noir :)

Brush: L'Occitane Synth
Soap: Mystic Water Poggio dei Pini (sample pressed into a Fijian coconut shell)
Razor: Gillette NEW Long Comb
Blade: Polsiver Super Iridium
Aftershave: The Stray Whisker #1 splash & Balm

This mornings shave was a splendid change up from the same soap, brush and razor that I took to Fiji.
The smoothed out coconut shell, normally used for drinking Kava, is a great vessel for pressing in soap samples.
Mystic Waters Poggio dei Pini is excellent. Smells wonderful and excels in the Slickness Department.
Gillette NEW and Polsilver Super Iridium blade = SMOOTH, SMOOTH, SMOOTH
Very confident that both The Stray Whisker AS and Balm from @shavetheman will be winners when finally released.

Nothing beats distilled water lathers.

Brush: Ploccitane
Soap: RazoRock Santa Maria Del Fiore Firenze
Razor: Eclipse Red Ring
Blade: Polsilver [3]
After-shave: Alt Innsbruick

Lovely shave. Thanks @SydBJW for trading this soap - it really puts a smile on my dial. The sweet tobacco scent continued from the soap to the aftershave cologne. Love it!

Preshave: PAA Ice preshave soap
Razor: Edwin Jagger DE89 with Windrose Handle
Blade: Permasharp Super
Brush: Vie Long Horse
Soap: Martin De Candre
Post Shave: Natio Balm, 4711 AS and Penhaligons Sartorial EDT
Two pass shave with clean up under chin. The Martin de Candre again produced an excellent thick luxurious lather that gave ample protection during the shave. Pleasant scent as well. The 4711 has no real staying power as far a scent is concerned so I finished off 30 minutes later with the Penhaligons Sartorial which is a beautiful and complex scent. Feel smooth and smell nice. Happy days.

Sword: Yamashita
Suds: B&M Latha / Omega S10108
Salve: Myrsol Antesol

It's much more ergonomic than a hybrid or Western but it doesn't get as sharp and therefore isn't as comfortable or effective in the shave.

Photo please @khun_diddy? I'm not familiar with a Yamashita Kami(?) Straight(?)

Thanks in advance :)

This guy.

It's a nice, fairly hefty kami. I'll play with it a bit more over the coming months but in the end I may offer it up on here to help get someone started on their own kami adventure.

Thanks @khun_diddy - it's a nice looking Kami. Surprised you're having sharpening difficulties with it. Nice to see that there is still somebody keeping me company in Kamisori shaving (y) Most of the others seem to have fallen by the wayside....

Don't get me wrong, it's quite sharp. It's just that I've been spoiled by the hybrid.
