This afternoons shave.
25617386270_6af73e67fc_c.jpg

This was my first shave with the Star 1902

Razor: Star 1902
Blade: Gem SS (shim 1-1/2 spines) to start.
Soap: MWF
Brush: Boar

As this was my first go with this particular razor. I took special care in my preparations today. Nice hot shower and a good face washing with Dove.

I had two full days growth to cut. I like that when testing a new to me razor. I made a real nice lather today, building it on my face. As I started with the recommended 1-1/2 shims to tame it down. Started the first pass paying attention to the angle and sound. This pass was pretty smooth. I wet my hands and did the once around checking for reduction. I was kind of disappointed the reduction was not up to par.

Ok I think to myself first time with razor not to worry. Lathered up for my second pass XTG. proceeded thru that with no issues. Again I wet my hands and checked. This reduction was what I expected the first one to do. Standing there thinking this is going to take too many passes to get a DFS. I removed all of the shims.

Lathered up for my third pass ATG. Now I am hearing this razor sing. I can hear those pesky little hairs getting whacked. Finished my third pass. Wet my hands and felt around. Now that is more like it. I am happy now. This was nice reduction. I was thinking to myself I should have started out this way.

I lathered for a fourth pass. I almost never do this. Did my fourth pass ATG. Minced off and I now have a fine mixed DFS BBS shave. Just a bit under my jaw and Adams Apple is all I can feel.

I am very pleased with how it performed without the shims. I will give it another go in a few days. I really need to find a wedge blade for this now.

Hi Tom

Interesting to hear on the passes you must have felt in some ways very nostalgic using something this old. I figure from your passes you are still searching for the right angle I have had that same issues with some razors but when you find it you'll blow yourself away it's such a good feeling and post shave feel when you hit the right angle.

Great write up Tom and thanks for sharing a beautiful piece of shaving history.

Now Mark I know you might be an adversery of the SLIM but what would have made this SOTD would have been a FatBoy instead of the SLIM ;) but mate it still looks awesome

Well I have to be a Slim supporter Nils - it is my birth year adjustable! The Fatboy is great though and I'm enjoying using mine at the moment ;)

Yes It is quite exciting using old razors. Just think if they could talk. Mine seems to have a lot of miles on it. But is in good shape for being over 100 years old.
Absolutely still searching for the angle. I will find it. Sitting here 4 hours after my shave I am pretty happy with the results. I will most likely use this for 2 or more shaves. I have a ER 1914 I picked up yesterday. Just in time for its Anniversary. I will be using that for a week.

That's it right there: vintage razors have a story to tell and last for so long. How much of what we buy today has either a story or longevity?!?

Pre: Shower
Brush: Vintage Butterscotch Best
Razor: Merkur 34c
Blade: Vintage Gillette 7 O'clock.
Soap: Shaver Heaven - SAM
Post: WH & PAA Al-fin

So I dropped my SR! Took two small chips out of the edge so that's that until it comes back from the Honemeiser. Back to DE I go. It's been three weeks.

Compared to a SR, the DE is sooo easy, fast and care free! Zip, zip zip done. Three passes in all of 5min! Close and no irritation. SR shaving will get faster and easier in time though. I'm only three weeks in.

Vintage blade was ordinary, well it's fine but nothing to get excited about. I'll be DE shaving for two weeks by the looks before the SR will be back.

The brush is sooo nice and soft. A joy to use.

Ol mate Douglas Smyth has it going on with the AS. Can't wait to tray another.

You will have to give it 4/5 days use to really appreciate I remember when I got my Fat Handle it just kept getting better and better after 4 days

Lovely looking Vintage Butterscotch SIMPSON brush in best there!!!

Glad you are enjoying it :)

Bastard - how did you know I had a cold ... ;)
Well, you know where my interest lies and while at it, what's $1.95 in the 50's adjusted to today's value, allowing for inflation?
Might as well go for an awesome pair of adjustable's ;)

Dr Jon's Anne Bonny

Someone please convince me that the aftershave is rubbish & I don't need to buy it....
thestraywhisker.com.au might have scratch&dent still :)

... bad news though their no shaving shops around Edinburgh unless I have to travel out west to Glasgow which I won't have time. I'll be home back to Sydney on the 28th, as I really want to go back to London for another two more weeks so I can catch up all the shaving shops in West of London never mind maybe next time.

Cheers ;)

Face Wash : Shower
Pre-Shave : Myrsol Emulsion
Brush : Trumper SB3
Soap : Mystic Water - Egyptian Dragon
Razor : Brucke straight 6/8"
After Shave : Alum, Myrsol Antesol, Terre d'Hermes

Sunday Smoothie...

A nice, simple unhurried shave today. A great Mystic Water lather followed by the wonderful Brucke straight. I really enjy this razor : it not only shaves close and comfortable, but lets me do almost anything I want without the fear of nicking or cutting myself. A nice finish thanks mostly to the Terre d'Hermes, which has surprising staying power for a citrus based fragrance. I can't remember the last time I had a disappointing or substandard shave. Makes me a lucky person I think....

Sword: Bunny V3 Wild / Personna Injector
Suds: Nivea Shaving Cream / Omega S10108
Salve: Nivea ASB

Let's start with the cream. It was $3,50 at Coles so I couldn't resist. I love the balm and the cream has exactly the same scent! The ingredients list is very respectable and the performance is stellar. It doesn't puff up as much as most creams do but that was no problem as there was slickness to boot. I could easily use this cream exclusively going forward. Give it a shot if you like the balm I reckon.

It's my go with the Bunny prototype. Many thanks to @twhite for sending it across the pond. He has clearly put a lot of thought into this beautiful device which has wonderful art deco stylings. I jumped in at the deep end with the Wild plate, the most aggressive of the three supplied. I had no issues though and ended up with an amazing shave with no nicks, cuts, weepers or even a hint of irritation. Two passes was plenty to get the job done.

There are many positives but key is the fact that it uses the mighty Injector blade. Why more manufacturers don't go with the Injector I will never understand.

Cons: harder than usual to find the angle going up on the neck; I don't own one.

Nivea nutso heaven & a nice spin on the Tech with the EJ Handle. Does that Lather look a little weak in it's consistency how was it
Lather was certainly a bit weak by the time I took this photo. The performance was stellar though. Slick and very protective.
