Chatillon Lux + Tallow & Steel - Yuzu, Rose, Patchouli Soap
Geo F Trumper West Indian Limes
Chatillon Lux Yuzu, Rose, Patchouli Aftershave

I was looking forward to this morning's shave all week, a chance to give the Yuzu,Rose Patchouli soap a run. It's a nice scent, I don't think much of the Rose makes it through the Yuzu but it is there affording a mild sweetness that comes through much more evidently in the salve and the Aftershave from Chatillon lLux. Puck size is the main issue here for me if I am honest, 113g in a tub does not really do it for me and proves a little to expensive for what is a nice, but not exceptional soap - the less than adequate 4oz/113g weight of the tub alone rules this out as one I will buy again - I would want to see 125g minimum to even consider it given the list price and shipping.

The usual two passes, as I say a nice but not exceptional soap that I would rank on first use slightly below 'Fine' with a little less slickness. I will give it a few more shaves before deciding absolutely but thus far in I was not immediately floored by any aspect of this puck and this may be as I am spoiled for choice of good, often really good soaps and creams. A nice clean off then on with the Geo-F-Trumper's skin food, interestingly I was reading the ingredients of the Geo-F and it's actually a very simple product (Not sure how it justifies the skin food label tbh) and easily made with a bit of know how. It's nice, smells good and contains some expensive extracts of plants but little in the way of actives and compounds that assist in feeding or otherwise repairing, moisturising the skin.

The Chatillon Lux aftershave is fantastic, a bright, tart citrus affair with the sweetness and top notes of the Rose shining through the Japanese Grapefruit, a really nice and simple composition. Often simple is best and this one definitely stays true to the maxim - a bloody good job!

Have a good un, be your bloody best :)

Firstly the scent straight out of the tub is quite smokey. Not sure what the reason is or which ingredient is causing it (untrained nose sorry). Quite a bitter smokey scent and quite different to the splash. I'm no chemist but can only guess that the composition of the oils changes slightly when added to soap and effects the scents that you can initially pick up

Bit of an update on the Washpool Farms tallow formula. After reading this I went home and checked the 2 brand new unscented tubs I received the other day, the bad news is the smell is from the soap itself without any Essential Oils being added. I suspect it may be the Lanolin they use or the method of rendering the tallow. My initial idea of it being an interaction of the Cedarwood in Alfredus Choice was outright wrong.

I am seriously having second thoughts about using their soap for APR as the smell is present exactly as described by @nsavage prior to any EO's being added. 'With some of the citrus accords I have, it would entirely spoil the fragrance from the tub which for me is half the appeal of a scented soap :(

Not good news unfortunately. Perhaps this is why Washpool have left that particular formula as an "unscented" option. Shame as I found it performed very well and as mentioned the smell did subdue through the shave.

I am more than happy with the performance and the scent once lathering starts, I will definitely continue using it myself, unfortunately though it's not something I would consider selling to people as the scent off the puck is often what people use to determine their liking or disliking of a soap (and my fragrance).

It's a bit of a shame really as I thought I may have had an Australian soap maker I could work with, the soap being Aussie was something that was fairly important to me and with Anthony SH out of the game the field is next to nothing.

Not sure what I will do from here to be honest, to say I am dejected about it would be an understatement. I was even looking at handmade pottery soap containers with lid (like what CRSW did) from an Aussie potter with the APR accacia and lettering. I am talking to Stirling but that would mean an American Soap base

I'm sure @bald as would be willing to share his recipe... The chemistry you have already employed with APR is probably far beyond soap making anyway. And as I understand it, the best time to add scents is just after the saponification process has taken place before the soap cools... You may already have a lot of the ingredients without knowing it...

I had a chat to him when I was in SA, and his soap is excellent, the thing is I am in an apartment and do not really have the time or space to commit to a soap making venture. My time with the fragrance component and development is stretched as it is. I am thinking I may just shelve the soap idea and just concentrate on my aftershaves and balms.

A Very P&C Shave
20170120_124927.jpg

Razor: Gillette Slim (7)
Blade: Shark SS (2)
Brush: Wolfpac Finest Badger
Soap: Truefitt & Hill Trafalgar Shaving Cream (first use)
Aftershave: General's Ledger (first use)
Bowl: TSN 2012 Limited Edition (first use)

Thoughts
- I didn't have to adjust the razor down for my chin/lip area - I've knocked the sensitivity off the skin for daily shaves. Yay. The plan is to move from 7 to 8 over the next few days and then resume my use of the New and Prismatic all over my face. I do have to say, that if beginners are reading this, a Gillette adjustable has worked really well for me to not only learn on but also condition the skin of different areas. I'd recommend it to others.
- @ben74 kindly PIFed me the Trafalgar cream when I purchased his 3 shaving bowls... along with some Simpsons gear and an Old Spice! This was my first play with T&H and I loved the scent which combines floral and woody notes in a really crisp way. As I'd predicted, this well known cream was easy to lather in the bigger bowl and I ended up with enough for 7 passes if I wanted with a little extra water. The cushion and glide during the shave were top notch and the cream demonstrated great residual slickness using the PaulH test. I will be buying more.
- It was great to play with a lather bowl of this quality. My other hobby is to collect Australian studio pottery and I can say that this is a very well-made pot. I'm studying the shape and texture in detail before I make my next shaving bowl... which will be wheel-thrown rather than the Greenpike pinch pot you've seen earlier.
- @todras's General's Ledger A/S (a FREE sample from my Suitably Attired Australian order) is more floral than I'd normally wear but I thought that it would pair with Trafalgar well. It did and can recommend the combo. As with SAA, the burn, dry down and face feel is fantastic. I suspect GL actually would sing more to me with a menthol blast whereas I like the SAA as is.

@todras - I had a squiz at their website, and the notes on the Lanolin Unscented Shaving Soap says the following - "...as well as an unscented lanolin version for those (like me) who dig its earthy scent and skin soothing benefits." (underlining by me)

Birthday shave!
The soap and splash arrived today, courtesy of @stillshunter, and both performed admirably. The scent on the soap is mellow, but nice and the splash smells just lovely.
I wasn't really sure which razor/blade I wanted to go with, but eventually settled on the slim (4) with personna red.
Clean shaven and smelling fine for dinner and drinks with friends.

Happy birthday @thisISjoel !

SOTD
Shower
Feather AC DX non folding with Pro blade (2)
Tim's Greek Peach + glycerine
Proraso brush
Re-lather + cold rinse

WTG + ATG again today. Got a few weepers on the first pass, one of which lasted too long - blade is still too sharp. I'm convincing myself that the Pro Super blades are a better option. They have never really damaged me and while they're just as sharp, the extra exposure allows use at a lower angle for the first few shaves - which is a good thing. Pro blades are just a bit too temperamental early on although they still smooth out nicely later.

That is disappointing @todras
Would Anthony at SH have any contacts for unscented soap bases if he is no longer producing them?

Just out of curiosity, have you contacted @Anthony? I know he sid he was out of the game, but he did mention that he could possibly be persuaded to make some small batch soaps for sellers possibly... Wouldn't hurt to ask him if he may be in a position to provide you with a small batch every once in a while? Worst he can say is no.

Oh, and Happy Birthday @thisISjoel :)
