So how's the effect?

Good question!

The APR from @todras sets a high bar and I'm not sure I would enjoy a simply alcohol and scent splash any more. This one is somewhere between them. I'm not sure that it meets the '7 original claims of Pitralon':
  • Helps eliminate spots and other impurities
  • Disinfects the skin
  • Makes the skin elastic and smooth
  • Prevents a greasy sheen
  • Opens blocked pores
  • Improves the blood flow
  • Works deep into the skin
... but then again I'm not sure how these could be substantiated! I'm happy enough with first use (y)

The Very Old Razor Shave - Australia Day
20170126_131526.jpg

Razor: Gillette "Old" Single Ring OC - 1909 Model 102 (first use, for me anyway)
Blade: Wilkinson SS - Made in England NOS (1)
Soap: Wolfpac Silk Road
Brush: K Shave Worx Gamechanger
Aftershave: APR Suitable Attired Australian

Thoughts
- I was scared of this $10 razor I purchased yesterday. I'd read that the Gillette Old OC could be mean depending on the life it's lead. And mine has had 108 years to be dropped. So I didn't tighten the blade overly, applied NO pressure, made a thick lather and... went for it. This razor needs a much shallower blade angle than the New or anything else I've used but has ended up being milder than the Prismatic everywhere except for the lip (and that's probably the blade). It won't be a daily shaver and it doesn't feel as nice as the New... but it's a hell of a good product and the history it has seen is pretty daunting. This thing is 7 years younger than Australia... it was an old razor by the time the Titanic sank and my grandfather's birth... and there is an excellent chance that it's been loved by multiple generations in a family. Incidentally, it's tarnished but there were no crusty bits or oxidation. Just wear. The edge of the head in the photo is showing tarnish rather than missing metal.
- I haven't felt an incredible amount of love for the current Wilkinson blades so far in my wetshaving journey. This is totally my skin and I accept they're popular kit for others. Anyway, I didn't have enormous hopes for the 13 x 5 blade packs of English Made NOS but 65 English blades for $13 seemed like a bargain. The blade today felt smoother than the current crop except for my lip for everything bar WTG. I will give them a go in all my razors to test properly and make my bargain a bargain. A 108 year old razor is probably not totally fair to judge these 1990s blades :)
- It was nice to play with Wolfpac again. Love the cloves and spice; they're well balanced. A nice thick lather and it protected me well.
- I over-applied @todras SAA but don't care. I'm in my own bubble of happiness.

AUSTRALIA DAY SHAVE
SOAP: Shaver Heaven "Fresh"
BRUSH: Vintage Klenzo- @bald as restore and reknot
RAZOR: Ausette Safety Razor
BLADE: Gillette "Aussie Spoiler"
Tonight i went as Aussie as i could for my shave, using Aussie soap, razor and blade. The Ausette razor has not aged well. The end cap feels as rough as sandpaper and the edges are far from level. I loaded a blade and it frowned at me. The blade edge looked more like the Harbour Bridge. Usually i wouldn't go near a combo like this but i had to do it for my country. Tonight i would bleed for my country if i had to...and i did haha.
With the lightest touch i got through one complete pass but that was all. It actually wasn't as bad as i thought it would be but there was no way i was doing another pass. Fixed things up with Feather/Feather combo, a few coats of Metilsol and all was bonza.
Happy Australia Day Fellas!

Mastro Livi K720, 7/8 Full Hollow, Square Point

Sunny day here in Umbria, it is cold, of course - it is winter after all - and I wanted to shave with a razor having a pretty "warm" and round touch on the skin. So I opted for a Mastro Livi carbon steel razor and I chose this K720 blade with boxwood scales with chequered inserts. The more I use Mastro Livi synthetic brushes the more I think they are among the very best synthetic ones I have ever used. They have the right smoothness yet having a proper backbone for a beautiful feedback on the skin, mounting lather to perfection. As for the soap, Martin De Candre is always a very good choice, not to mention the Fougère fragrance which smells absolutely great, lovely and balanced. Myrsol F./Extra aftershave provided the finishing touch to this absolutely BBS shave.
  • Pre-Shave: RazorGuy Pre-Shave Oil
  • Soap: Martin De Candre Fougère
  • Brush: Mastro Livi Perugia Eco-Silvertip, Bois De Rose, 26mm knot
  • Bowl: Bamboo Bowl
  • Strop: Mastro Livi Medium Loom Strop "Coramella Italiana" and Hand Palm
  • Razor: Mastro Livi K720, 7/8 Full Hollow, Square Point
  • Post-Shave: Alum Block
  • Post-Shave: Umbrian Extravirgin Olive Oil
  • After Shave: Myrsol F./Extra

EDT: Barrister Classic - Cool

Kudos to the many SOTD posts that featured Aussie products. I am a strong supporter of local products (as my previous SOTD posts attest), but it did not cross my mind to do a "themed" shave.
Nevertheless, a wonderful shave this evening. Three comfortable passes for a DFS+ result.
The mercury peaked at 42C here in Perth today, so menthol was again called upon. I am a big fan of the Barrister Classic Cool splash - very refreshing, skin friendly, and a more than decent menthol kick.
Condolences to the families of the Aircraft crew tragically killed on the Swan in this evening's celebrations.

St James of London
Gillette Fatboy
Feather
Santa Maria Novella Crema da Barba
Australian Private Reserve L'endroit Orange Balm
Australian Private Reserve L'endroit Orange Aftershave
Acqua Di Palma Colonia

A very pleasing shave this morning and the first run of the Crena Da Barba which reminds me a lot of the AdP cream in feel, performance and in the presence of a suitable quantity of menthol which makes the shave very enjoyable and cooling. I'm glad I picked this one up as it's a keeper and will slot in nicely to my summer rotation. A two pass then nice clean off, some experimentation with the Orange Place and AdP this morning which worked to a tea, balm then aftershave then cologne. A very pleasant way to start Friday, the traditional Italian herbaceous citrus design of Barbershop fragrance executed perfectly without the saccharin sweetness of the US preference.

Have a great day everyone :)

Razor: Wilkinson Sword 'Sticky'
Blade: Personna 'Lab Blue' (5)
Brush: Vintage butterscotch Simpson
Soap/Cream: Mondail Tabacco Verde
Post-shave: Pitralon Pure

OK, well that was interesting! Think chemical / banana lollies settling down to something more sensible with the Pitralon Pure.

Despite their talk about the effect the website descriptions focus a lot on the smell. They indicate the 'Head' is 'Green fruits complex, pineapple, lemon and lavender', I'm presuming that the 'Green fruits complex' is the 'chemical' I get and the 'pineapple, lemon' is what triggers the lolly banana association!

I'm still trying to work out if I can pick the heliotrope in the base notes, not sure I'm come across a Heliotrope air freshner to compare it with ...

Oh, decent shave with quality kit, after the initial rush settles the Pitralon Pure is OK.

Glad you like the Santa Maria Novella @todras - it is nice stuff and, even better, you have the original formulation!
