When I started to look english-USA based oforums, this soap was like an unicorn to many people. You could see it in ebay 3-4 times the original prize. It was also the only one using duck tallow, and that make me have niterest on it. So Far only one shave with it and i can say it is really good one. Just need one-two more shaves of each of the last ones to be able to say something more "robustly" about them. The blade on its third use did a good job, and Frenchurch delivered a really nice scent and some goodies to my skin :)

There’s a certain richness and aura from Oud that just can’t be replicated, it’s a perfume in itself. Synths always come across as being a bit flat

There are specific class of chemicals that we are currently unable to recreate on a broad commercial scale. Oud results from a disease and what we treasure is the byproduct of this infection. However, I have heard mention of 3 captives that when used with the other 'Oud' AC's can replicate it exactly, in fact they are used in AdP/Dior and other top names to compliment the genuine compound as their effect is amplification.

99% of commercial Oud products contain no real Oud. That doesn’t necessarily make it a bad product in my eyes. I haven’t used the shaving soap but I do like Tundra in bath/shower soap format and have a few here.

I'd say 50% of commercial products do contain real Oud, it's a legislative requirement in the EU, Australia and the US for cosmetics if you claim a product contains X it must contain it especially if it is a value claim i.e this stuff contains.... Ambergris, gold, oudh, Mysore Sandalwood etc, etc. For small companies, under the radar - yes you are right, bugger all chance of genuine oud.

However even with the big boys the quantity of Oud present may be as little as .0025 of a gram per batch, a batch may make 100/200 or whatever units of a smaller quantity. There are 6 or 7 good Oud AC's (actually there is a brand new one so 8) but building an accord with these that even slightly resembles the real deal is very hard unless you have some real oud to hand.

Most
wet-shaving products I have encountered that claim to contain Oud generally use 1 or 2 of the high impact AC's and that is it, this is fine for most people but I can not only pick the specific AC's they have used as an Oud fanatic, I can also fairly easily tell there is no real Oud as could anyone who has experienced the real deal a couple of times. The same thing plays out with Sandalwood which is equally difficult if not more so to recreate using AC's and it grinds my bloody gears no end as I spend the dollars on the real thing.

I recently sent Dan a small sample of Xerjoff Kampuchea Noir which is more representative of the ouds I wear. I don’t know if he’s had chance to wear it. That’s now out of production from Xerjoff, simply because the oil has ran out, it’s done and can’t be replicated because it’s genuine oud.

You have my eternal thanks for that sample, it has a potency and character that is truly astounding.

That went in my Oud collection and will not ever be used, it contains some very precious aged material along with some 'regular' that are the highest grade I have ever experienced. The mind can only wonder where they acquired the aged, nevermind the regular.

It is exquisite and worth every penny of the $150 per ml. The only grades higher than those contained within are reserved for the likes of Saudi Royals and such like and will never hit the market.

I read of a chemical not long ago, the name escapes me, that has been produced but is so costly to do so that it doesn’t make financial sense, the real deal may as well be used.

I think I may have been vague with the 99% comment. I was specifically talking about products that have Oud listed as a note and then the ingredients will generally just say parfum/fragrance.

SOTN 29/07/18
Brush: Proraso (Omega)
Razor: Merkur 34C HD
Blade: Gillette Nacet (4)
Scuttle/Bowl/Mug: Fine lathering bowl
Soap: RR xXx
Post: Witch Hazel & Tea Tree Oil + TSW balm

Another attempt at a head/face shave with mixed results. Managed to whip up a creamy lather and whilst the shave was super smooth and comfortable, I still had some spots I just couldn't shave as efficiently as I had hoped. No weepers, nicks nor irritation so just need to try a more aggressive DE and work on my technique. Not the worst shave so optimistic I'll get things right soon enough... Have a great start to the working week!

Razor: Vintage Gillette L1 'Slim' Adjustable (5)
Blade: Vintage NOS Gillette Super Stainless (6)
Soap/Cream: Phoenix & Beau Spitfire shaving cream
Aftershave: Phoenix & Beau Spitfire lotion
Fragrance: Phoenix & Beau Spitfire solid cologne

Chocks away on the new working week!

That is down to EU law and Australian law too actually, fragrance or parfum designate the multitudes of EO's and AC's including oud used together to make a fragrance - the designation is actually very importantly as it protects the perfume formulation by not requiring every component used to be listed. When you use perfume/fragrance on a label, you then need to keep a full formulation of that perfume and be 100% sure it is IFRA compliant by paying kickbacks, subscribing to their costly and highly dubious update bulletins and swallowing their bullshit whole and willingly.

The EU has further (extensive) requirements too for potential allergens - Linalool, Geraniol etc - you will see these appear on the contents list in everything from shaving cream to toilet bowl cleaner (in addition to Fragrance/parfum) if a perfume formulation has been included.

BBS off this combo, very nice,(y) but there will be a V3. The Argan oil changed the scent profile of the soap, just took the edge off the spicy/fruityness. Not a disaster but I prefer the original scent.

Stayed in town at Crown Melbourne last night so took my travel kit (sort of).
This consisted of a Yaqi Timber Wolf brush, Speick stick, sample SV Cosmo aftershave, and the Rockwell 6S (4) with a new German Wilky blade (good and one and out).
Not sure why but i had claret leaking from the 20th floor down to floor 5 i reckon!
Nicked a bump which i have on my right side of my chin cleft and it wouldn't stop pissing blood until i applied the syptic pencil.
My thoughts once this happened were basically, "if i'm bleeding this much on pass 1, i can go all out and do a 4 pass shave and be none worse". This left me quite a bit disheartened with the whole thing as my shaves recently have been a bit hit and miss.

Well, i have a BBS all over - so Yay for me! Pink lather isn't all bad....

I really wanted a perfect shave (its my B'day after all) but getting this result wasn't meant to be so difficult.

Have a great week guys (and potentially - girls)!

P.S. getting the water to the right temperature and keeping it there was painful so for three quarters of the shave i used cold water and didn't mind it one bit! I see why @SpeedyPC does this often....

Fingers crossed future shaves start getting me back on track!

A sleepless night which will come back to bite me soon enough, but a nice shave to make up for it.

Hi @Rider_159 how are you going with this soap?

Much better now, thanks for asking. I've more or less been following this method I mentioned earlier with a small change - dipping the brush in water at least once at some point during your loading. https://paste-and-cut.com.au/commun...the-day-thread-2018.4560/page-184#post-130107

To put it more simply - a really wet brush and a fairly short load seem to be doing the trick. I lather right around up to the point where the soap starts to get 'gloopy', then stop and go to the face. 'Volume' of the lather dissipates a bit in the latter passes but the slickness is all there, and for me that's all that's really needed at that stage.

How have you been going yourself?

Don't look at todays SOTD then...(n)

Yeah i think with the Cool soap much the same as your experience - i haven't tried wetting the brush a second time while loading so might try this tomorrow morning.
I want to like this soap so much but it is so temperamental for me. I've tried bowl lathering also, but the bowl is completely smooth so this isn't helping.
I will persist until the sample is no more...

Eugh, I just had a read. Grim stuff and indeed I hope your future shaves improve. Take a few days' break if need be (and if possible!).

As for the soap - keep at it but don't stress if it's just not for you, with the range of options out there it's not worth getting bogged down in single finicky soap.

After using the fatboy and same software all last week I switched to the slim for this week and changed the software as well.started out on 7 same as the FB but wound it back to 6 after the first pass for a bit smoother shave.its not as nice a shave as with the fb but I'm hoping by the end of the week I will have the angle nailed for a better result.this is the slims last chance to impress me and if it doesn't will be moved on and i will keep the fb as my adjustable.

  6. Earworm: Brianstrom - Arctic Monkeys
lovely shave this morning. I really like the smokey scent on this soap and it performs admirably. I hadn't shaved all weekend and the razor just mowed the stubble down. Managed a DFS after two passes. I've not tried a 3 pass shave with the straights yet. I'm tending to stop without pushing my luck too much. I definitely still classify myself as a novice with these things.

On a separate note, just got a message from Auspost that my DC Blades, Charity Auction razor has arrived. Very excited.

Proraso Green Pre/Somersets
MWF
Razorock Big Bruce
Muhle R41
Astra green
Thayers
Proraso Green Balm & Splash

Not the best shave this morning....far too much water in the MWF, should have binned it and started again.
Had 3 days growth which the R41 normally slices through really easily but the Astra was really tugging and pulling at the hairs - brand new blade as well.
2 pass DFS but just didn't feel the love....

Happy birthday @tim33z - if you can get a good shave from a certain razor/blade combo, your problem is most likely poor lather...look at your good shaves and use that soap/brush combo together with the same razor/blade combo and see how you go ;)
