Hey @Zeke - good to hear that you seem to be turning a corner work wise! Glad you can fine your 'zen' spot in your daily shave. Trust that it all goes well tomorrow.

Thanks, @Mark1966, and everyone else too. It's a familiar story - a great place to work gets taken over by a large corporate, and all of a sudden, the three most important things to the business are the budget, the budget, and the budget! People leave, they don't replace them, but the budget still goes up every year. Somehow they seem to find the funds to put on lots of upper-level managers though, despite there being no room in the budget for the people at the branch level who actually create the cash flow that pays the managers' salaries...

The good news is that I'm moving on to a business that seems to have the total opposite approach. This is from the job ad, and it's in my job description too - A sense of humour and a desire to belong and contribute to a great team and workplace culture which is about respect, inclusion and belonging. Some of the personal attributes desired are listed as respect, empathy and integrity. If the bosses model what they expect from me, it sounds like a great place to work.

It works both ways. I moved from Perth to Adelaide Hills to take a job with a family-owned business that shall remain nameless here for the sole reason that it has since been acquired by a private equity consortium. The CEO who was so keen to butter me up when I expressed interest turned out to be a total micro-manager who had missed her vocation of manning the gas-chambers at Belsen. (Ze executions vill continue until morale improves!) The money was good (I negotiated that before I moved) but it was easily the most stressful time of my life. For my last two months I kept a resignation letter in my locker ready for signing at a moment's notice.

I drove home last night in the middle of a massive storm. I was roughly 300m from home, and got turned around due to powerlines over the road. When I eventually got home, the wife and I sat in the dark until power was restored 3 hours later. Thank God, for combustable heating, providing both light and warmth.

That sounds pretty ordinary!

I remember the blackouts that used to be far more common when I was a kid. We were very happy to have gas to cook with.

Nowadays of course as we move to phase out gas it will be interesting to see how the infrastructure copes with storms and blackouts.
