Back to a natural finished edge off an Adaee #12000 this morning with a Titan T.H.60. Soap was La Toja, face lathered with a Proraso Pro boar brush. Another wonderful three-pass shave (W, X, X) for a DFS+ result. Not overly fussed on the performance of the La Toja but will stick with it for the rest of the week to see if it just me.

Pre-shave: Hot towel, Proraso Pre-shave
Brush: Zenith unbleached boar
Soap: ABC Hard Shaving Soap
Razor: TI Spartacus 7/8
Post-shave: Cold towel compress, Alexander Simson Bay Rum Aftershave Balm

The factory edge on the TI is quite good. There is room for improvement.

The ABC hard soap is a phenomenal performer, it's a shame that the almond scent is quite faint; It's practically unscented.

Pre-shave: Hot flannel, Pears soap
Brush: Troycraft "Opalesque" 28mm AP G5C
Soap: Art of Shaving - Lavender
Razor: Blackland Sabre
Blade: Personna GEM Stainless
Post-shave: Shower, homebrew moisturiser, La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF50+
COTD: Rante Kapua Torajah, Sulawesi

This is the first time I've used an Art of Shaving soap. I've read that there was a time when they were made by Valobra. This is not such a soap, though it's clearly milled. It's veg-based (I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt on that, since there are now many good tallow-free soaps), and easily delivers lots and lots of nicely slick lather. The scent is fairly light, a fragrance oil, I think, rather than EO. Overall, a very pleasant shave.

But here's the kicker for me: it left my skin quite red and uncomfortable. This doesn't happen to me very often, but such is life. So out it goes...

I have a couple of the AOS soaps with the Valobra base - both sandalwood. Performance, as you would expect, is elite. The scent is a dry and pure sandalwood i.e. not as sweet as many existing sandalwood soaps and creams.

Last two shaves. Both myself and the wife caught the dreaded spicy cough last week. While she just had mild cough and sore throat I hit the covid lottery and had fever, chills, migraine, sore throat, cough, night sweats and nausea. I shudder to think what would have happened if I wasn’t vaccinated.

We’re both well recovered now thankfully.

Glad to hear it. I got my second booster just yesterday (Moderna) and I thought I had got away with almost no reaction, but feeling decidedly second-rate right now. Might be time for some medication from Islay... :p

I got my first booster on Friday (Moderna) and had a slightly sore arm for the day nothing else. My initial shots were Astra Zenica and didn't react either. The first AZ shot knocked the wife around for 3 days so I was in the dog house because I was fine and she was crook.

SOTD – WED 20 JUL 2022

Aussie Wednesday shave with Squadron - “Group Captain’s Blend”, a Tallow based soap. Squadron are based in the rural outskirts of the Barossa Valley in South Australia, they have been making shaving soap since 2015 and they use WWII Air Force themes in their artwork and scent names that are reminiscent of the British 'Commando' Comics. The “Group Captain’s Blend” is described as: “Reminiscent of an aromatic pipe tobacco. First up the vanilla hits you, followed quickly by malt, tobacco leaf and cedar wood. It's like opening a fresh pouch of old-school sweet pipe tobacco.” Squadron soaps come in 125g tubs that cost AU$22.00, which equates to “Exceptional” value in my Bang-for-Buck guide.

Shave Result: Squadron produced a lovely medium density, creamy and shiny lather from my normal half teaspoon scoop of soap (about 3.25g), the soap likes a bit of water (20ml). The lather provided excellent slickness and protection, although the residual tended to dry quickly, I still rate Squadron lather a Tier 2 performer. From the lather I get a lovely well blended aroma that does smell like afresh pouch of sweet pipe tobacco, lather scent strength 6/10. Loading the blade in the Yaqi SE can be a bit fiddly but it shaves nicely at about medium aggression. Overall a lovely smooth and clean DFS.
