SOTD – Sun 13 Mar 2022
Sunday shave with Uncle Jon’s (UJ’s) – GRAVITY. From what I can gather UJ’s has been making the current Tallow based shave soap since 2016 (with a few tweaks here and there)and is handmade in small batches with a traditional short ingredient list: “Water, Stearic Acid, Tallow, Castor Oil, Glycerin, Coconut Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Shea Butter, Sodium Hydroxide, Fragrance”.
Gravity scent described as: “Notes of Crisp Alpine Air, Mandarin, Cardamom, Vetiver, Suede, Vanilla, and Teakwood will have you feeling clean and dapper in no time”.

🎥 Shave VIDEO 🎥

Shave Result: Using Uncle Jon’s soap for the first time, soap texture is soft. UJ soap lathered easily to produce a lovely shiny, rich, creamy lather using my standard “moist brush+dry soap+add water slowly (via spray bottle)” build method with a level half teaspoon soap scoop. Lather performance was excellent, a definite Tier 2 soap. To my nose Gravity scent was lovely masculine cologne barbershop style scent, scent strength 5/10. The Hawk V2 with the Pro blade felt mid aggression and efficient, finished with a smooth and close DFS.

Finished off the GENEROUS sample of Haverford from Artisan Arcade - seriously people, we owe @Ozwhisker thanks for bringing these Stirling Soaps to Australia.

All told, a great birthday shave!

Pre-shave: Hot Shower
Brush: SOC Finest Badger
Soap: Acca Kappa Barbershop Collection
Razor: Kropp (Hamburg ground)
Post-shave: Proraso

A top performer soap with a nice peppermint scent.

I spent a couple hours yesterday to clean up, remove as much of the rust as possible and then hone this razor. It was time well spent as the shave this morning was fantastic.

I have two Kropp razors; this one is ground in Hamburg and the other one is ground in Sheffield. I have not used the Sheffield one yet.

What do you think of the T&H soap? It's one that I haven't tried, and most of the other British hard soaps (a notable exception being DRH) have been reformulated so they no longer lather worth a damn. If the T&H milled soap is any good, it'll make my day...

I bought 3 of the soaps from feeling sexy recently ($27 each with bowls - a real bargain!). This basic one is allegedly “Lavender”. It smells a bit like RID mosquito repellent but lathers pretty well. Getting used to the smell. The other 2 are Apsley and Sandalwood which are untouched but will get an outing soon. I also got creams which were pretty good.

My only previous dabble with T & H was a Spanish Leather cologne years ago which was super strong and I ended up giving it to my 70-80yo dad at the time. It had a real “classic” old scent and I just couldn’t take it.

I really liked the Apsley cream scent. Not a big fan of Sandlewood usually.

I also snapped up a Tabac in its bowl for $35. I don’t think it was on sale. Have never ever experienced Tabac, so that may well be interesting too.

Pre-shave: Hot shower
Brush: Billy Goat Brushworks/ 26mm 2 band Sunset Mallee burl
Soap: Fine ‘L’Orange Noir
Razor: Brass Karve CB ‘F plate’.
Blade: Gillette ‘Red+White’ (3)
Post-shave: Alum block, Pinaud Special Reserve, Armaf ‘Club de Nuit’

This was just the second time I've used the Fine soap, which was given to me in a trade. I grated a little into my Fine bowl,
and a little turned out to be plenty, verging on too much. I've read that the Fine soaps were made at the same place as
the revered Tabac, and if so I can see why people rave about the big 'T'. It was just terrific, and the combination of such a great soap with the
ultra efficient but smooth Karve/Gillette combo was perfect. DFS+.

Shame about the lav scent. DRH is a disappointment in that regard as well, it smells a bit like something I've used to clean the bath. Agree about the Spanish Leather, it's pretty full-on. I couldn't take it either.

Ahhh - the Above the Tie S1 Slant. Such a great razor, and works a treat with the UFO handle.

As my old mate Alfie, aka @alfredus, once told me - "It allows you to disengage your brain and glide effortlessly around your face, magically erasing your growth."
