Shave of the Day 2014

You must realise that @Johnus has only a single hair on his face (apart from eyebrow and eyelashes of course) so a 2 pass shave with only water is quite easy - swish swipe and its all over. :)
Appreciate the honesty, albeit on somebody else's behalf.
You're in good company @Johnus, as the hairs on the top of my head number the same…

Possible, but not highly recommended.
Agreed, but so far I cannot see how I could do it even if only mildly recommended. Without foam, passing the head of my razor would be like the downward motion of a bare-arsed fat kid on a slippery dip fashioned from rusty old reclaimed corrugated iron. Then again maybe my tank water's pretty hard. Hmmmm….

My brother-in-law is a water only shaver. With a cartridge razor mind you. I shudder at the thought of him doing it. Apparently his skin does not agree with shave cream.

Today swapped from eton to rose TOBs.

38c and polsilv.

Rose seems to give a better shave that eton somehow
I'm using Eton at the moment. In what way do you think it gives a better shave?
The only rose I have tried was in a tobs sampler.

Gillette Fatboy (2)
Astra Green (1)
TOBS Sandalwood
First run with the Simpson Commodore X2

Great shave, the Simpson made a much tighter lather than I had been getting with the crappy brush I was using. No pulling from the fresh Astra which was great. Will be interested to see how many shaves it is good for. Didn't shave yesterday, so went two passes wtg and another atg.

The rise gave me a smoother cut. I am not sure if its the pol silv smoothing out or the cream is more fresh or something but it worked well..... Becoming a TOBs cream fan!

Razor: Edwin Jagger DE89
Blade: IP Red
Brush: Omega #49
Soap/Cream: Proraso Red Cream (tube)
After-shave: Proraso AS Splash (Green)…and then Razorock AS Wax (Original)

Thought I'd try the other Italian with the Italian boar. Once again, the boar created a hospital grade anti-fungal, anti-yeast yoghurt treatment, The first pass I looked like the dude on the 1kg Cella box. These lathers petered out again come passes two and three (both XTG - in and out). I'm real quite liking the feel of the boar, but I'd be curious to try a pig-brush with a little less loft. The #49 is a lush paintbrush, and I always enjoy a little scratch. Come third rinse and inspection for the fix-up fourth round I couldn't find anything to mop up. Came out clean and shiny. The final cold splash felt so nice I thought I'd give the Proraso green splash a go. Felt quite refreshing…especially as I journeyed out to the fireplace. Just doesn't give the comfort the Razorock does for my face.

Anyway best shave so far. Have to say if someone put a gun to my head this early in my career and demanded I order 100 blades then I reckon I could live with these IP Reds. …though I am looking forward to trying the Spoilers @glenos sent as well as vintage tasters from our resident dealer - @Monsta_AU.

Feel so good right now - 10 minutes post-shave.

Lather shouldn't peter out after 1st pass. The brush probably just needs some more use. Or soak it well first. I always use enough product to have some left over. If it means I make too much that's better than not enough.

Quick shave this morning - a two passer with the Fatboy loaded with a 3-shave Malteser, and hitting the Speick again to run it out.

A good and comfortable result, although the neck could have been closer.

Anyway, with 4 shaves the Malteser goes in the bin. What to use next.....

Gotta be tough @Montsa_AU I am sure amongst us all you are the one with the fewest choices to make :)

Today was a special day

My 38c FS badger and TOBs rose

In the 38c astra BLUE. Ohhh so sharp and smooth. For the astra and feather folk the blue is in-between the both I think :)

No just slap the brush against my face.

That's strange that your lather peters out. I tend to have the lather still a bit water hungry when I do the first pass and dip the tips in between each pass and work it a bit more. That also keeps it warm. Maybe you need to load a bit more to start with or add a bit less water. Mind you, with a brush that size it's easy to get way too much and you're up to your elbows in the stuff.

Yeah I dip the tips between passes. The first pass is thick and rich, the next thins a bit but remains slick, by the third I have a far thinner coating again - still adequate glide but less cushion. With the Proraso I used an almond sized squeeze ('bout an inch long). Should I try more again next time?

Again, with the badger I find I have the some volume and thickness with each pass…albeit the Duke retains quite a commission until squeezed at the last.

Are you sure it's petering out? I mean turning to slop? What you describe is basically trying to put lather on a surface which is becoming smoother with every pass. Not the fault of the lather, it's just got nothing to hold on to. Personally don't think it makes much difference which brush I use either. I think you're using enough cream. Hell, the Wee Scot used half that and gives three passes worth of lather.

I have been playing with my new Feather AC over the past week and am getting better with it with practice.

I have tried different soaps, creams and brushes and they all work but this morning had a great shave with Speick soap.

I have been contemplating shaving as we all do and had many thoughts.

I used to be a practitioner of Japanese sword arts for many years in which we would practice Tameshigiri which is test cutting

where we used Tatami (like beach mats) which were rolled and soaked then used as targets (they don't use human bodies any more)

to test our accuracy etc. Well there is heaps of technique which comes with practice and then the freeing of oneself to that Zen thing of

Zanshin , Mushin and all that mind no mind stuff. I like to ponder such things.

Well it really relates to shaving I reckon, but that's enough as I could crap on and on but practice and technique is where it always happens.

Ohh, I could get really boring but just saying that I am enjoying very much the slashing down of armies of whiskers at the moment, soapy ones!

Still love my DE's though.

Nice close shave today.
