Grifetto!

Mastro Livi Grifetto rocks! Today I needed a super cooling shave - I do not like the heat and today it seems quite hot here - and I opted for a couple of products I knew they could give me a sort of cooling effect. I used Prep shaving soap, having a moderate cooling effect, and what gave me a super freezing touch was my homemade Thyrrenus aftershave. I in fact specifically made this aftershave for summertime and I wanted it to be super refreshing, just like ice cubes caressing your face. As for Mastro Livi Grifetto, it is always a super performing razor delivering a very close and super smooth shave as well as being very gentle on the skin. What a refreshing shave!

Seemed like a balm morning.

@Hocky27 - you Slim may be fixable. Post some pics and whisper sweetly to @FatBoy58 :)

Managed to drop my Gillette Slim this morning & have screwed the adjustable plate so the blade gap is no longer even on both sides :(

Pretty much explains the shave this morning. Crap.

That is a bad way to start the day.

:) Ever felt like you cheated with your shave. Tonight I got a taste of how men must have felt when them thar new fangled SE razors arrived on the scene back in the late 1890's and they could choose an almost instant shave experience compared to their daily longer straight razor shave. Tonight I couldn't devote the amount of time I wanted for a straight shave so used my Gem Clog Pruf. Great shave, seriously good - but over before, well it was over far too quick. 2 passes for DFS. A great shave but not anything like the total experience of a scary sharp blade close to the skin.

Brush: Whipped dog - shedder. Excellent brush though. Makes good lather and plenty of it. Soft on the skin and distributes the lather very well.
Soap: My combo super sauce in warm scuttle.
Razor: Gem Clog Pruf.

Back to a straight tomorrow night. :) Just for the adrenalin.

If you really want to cheat your shave, get a double foil electric! Fast, efficient, cost effective, zero irritation or in growns and a DFS that lasts a whole two hours every single day. In my experience anyway.

Pre Shave:
Shower
Soap: Maggards Orange Menthol
Brush: Epsilon Vie Badger (On loan from @Draco Noir)
Razor: Manaslu
Post Shave: Alum, Proraso Splash

FRAT version below.

Today's shave is right up there with the best, if not the best I've ever had. After receiving my beautiful JNAT Ozuku stone from @Mark earlier in the week I spent yesterday afternoon with @Draco Noir getting a honing lesson. This involved a lot of theory but also the practical application of taking the razor @Mark had kindly given me, killing the edge, to razor sharp under Draco's watchful eye, including setting the bevel. Draco was also kind enough to lend me a set of his precious nagura stones so I could practise at home until I get my own set.

I had been planing on continuing using the Kamisori exclusively at least for another 10 shaves but the thought of using a razor I had honed was too great a temptation. I find the whole honing process fascinating and adds a whole new element of satisfaction to the shaving process.

Draco also lent his Epsilon Vie badger brush, I had thought it was going to be way too big for my liking but I was pleasantly surprised. I think it may be because prior to trying the Epsilon my only other experience with a bigger brush was my SOC where the hair tends to fan out makes which I find makes it a bit less user friendly for face lathering. The Epsilon was a real soap hog but I found the performance was excellent and it has really changed my mind on bigger brushes.

Prior to this shave the Kamisori was the only straight I had ever used so I was very happy that everything I had learnt I was able to utilise with the Manaslu. In fact I actually found the Masaslu a lot more user friendly compared to the Kamisori and it also gave a great audible feedback which I really enjoy. Despite this, the Kamisori will remain my go to razor which should hopefully make my ultimate transition to an asymmetrical Kamisori a little easier. In saying that though I will be including the Masaslu from time to time for testing purposes while I continue to use it to practise honing it. It really is a great razor in it's own right and I really appreciate @Mark's generosity in giving it to me to practise with.

Throughout my three pass shave (ATG, XTG, WTG) there was no point I felt like I was in any danger of nicking myself. The end result was as close a shave as I've ever had previously and while that was greatly satisfying in and of itself, the added knowledge, knowing that I had put the edge on the razor took my satisfaction and feeling of achievement to a whole other level.

I really have to thank both @Mark and especially @Draco Noir, I have so much to learn but I couldn't ask for better or more generous teachers. I am one very lucky Grasshopper! :)

FRAT:
Previously the only straight I've every used was my trusty Kamisori. This shave I used a western straight which I also honed from a blunt edge to shave ready. This gave as close a shave as I've ever had and was also nick free! Very satisfied :D

5 stone progression... I've only ever used two Nagura's. I have been thinking about getting a set of three just for laughs though.

Pre: Nil
Brush: Chubby 2
Soap: Shaver Heaven - Oatmeal Stout
Strop: Kanoyama #30'000
Blade: Parker 510
Post: Stray Whisker Balm & PAA - Malboge.

Took the 510 back to the stone for a few more laps with the Tomo Nagura & 7 on running water. Far far better today. Very nice, smooth and efficient. Only irritation today was the upper lip and either side of chin - my two problem areas. There are skin bumps in that area, tiny, maybe they are the pores and it makes for trouble trying to get a close shave.

Oatmeal Stout is a winner! I was apprehensive about it. From the tub, to me, its all oats with a hint of almond, and strong at that. I've said it a thousand times and I will say it again - smelling the tub is no way to test a scent so on with the lather. Once on the face it was something much more complex and far more interesting. The butterscotch shines through and so does the vanilla. I struggled with the Orange peel but we shall see how it develops, and my nose grows to appreciate it in the next few shaves.

I was up until this winter one who said there was no such thing as seasonal scents. This winter has turned me on this I think and I have been enjoying Shavers Heavens warm winter scents very much so far. I haven't looked sideways as the more bright and summery scents for a while now.

Unfortunately one of the best razors I've ever used [emoji24]

I guess that's why you don't see them come up for sale very often. I'll continue the hunt for one in the wild.

Sigh ...

The one that got away!

Hey - Happy shaving :)

You've got to say fair play to the guy who let it out into the wild for others to try.
I'm not sure I'd be as trusting of you lot.

Pre: Musgo Real Lime Oil Soap, Myrsol Antesol and Emulsion
Brush: Savile Row 3824 Silvertip
Cream: TOBS Coconut
Razor: Feather AS-D2
Blade: Feather (3)
Post: Myrsol Antesol and Emulsion
Post Post: Myrsol Agua Balsamica
Cologne: Alvarez Gomez Barberia Concentrado

First time I've used the TOBS Coconut. Also tried the Antesol and Emulsion together after reading the Myrsol labels. Massaged the Antesol into a moist face after cleansing, then applied the Emulsion and whipped up a lather. The TOBS lathered nicely a gave a good quantity of lather; sufficient for a 3 pass shave. The lather did not feel as cushioning as the LPL the previous shave, and I hesitated before making the third pass. A close shave, but with a few areas that needed a buff, but I was not game to go again. One small weeper on the chin, and a small area of raised red irritation back on the upper lip.
Thus, I turned to the Agua Balsamica for some skin repair.
Finished off with some Alvarez Gomez cologne - a spicy citrus hit.
