Shave of the Day Thread - 2016

What is happening??? Woke up this morning, bit tired from being over friends' last night, wandered into the man cave & started stropping a Dovo 5/8. Somehow I put a nick in the leather strop ... ... ... not impressed. Next lap on the strop the Dovo hit the nick and came loose from my hand and started the plummet to the floor. My disabilities from my accident have left me with limb coordination issues & depth of field judgement problems so when I threw my hand out to catch it (stupid, stupid, stupid) I missed catching it ... ... ... no real surprise there. Instead the blade hit the heel of my hand and put a nice 3/4" slice just below my wrist.

That was it. I put the straight "back in the rack", pulled down the SE (GEM Personna 3) and since my shave was already ruined I decided that things can't get any worse, so I grabbed the ARKO. Good lather and a boring shave but close and smooth. I'll go the SE again tomorrow. After two forgettable days with a straight I'll refocus for a couple of days again before I pick up one of the straights again.

This is one of the reasons why I decided never to go the straight route, and I don't even have your excuse (not the right word but I can't think what to use) of having your coordination issues.
Just a wife who screams when she sees a cockroach/spider/mouse/rat/anylivingthingthat isn'tmeortheboy*, and a very inquisitive 18 month old.

*delete as appropriate.

@Dale.Whiley - what's going on, Mate? Talk about a run of bad luck. Hang in there and hope the hand heals quickly.

I got the itch for something different so I pulled my Lutz slant out of storage. Last fall when I got it I found it to light so I added lead shot to the handle. It helped balance it out and provides me a pretty good shave but I still prefer my 37C. Blade Kai. Soap Stirling Barbershop. ALso, I've really come to like the Stirling balm. Coffee black.

Soap: CRSW Jardin D'Orange
Razor: Eclipse Red Ring
Blade: Gillette Bleue Extra [3]
After-shave: Myrsol Antesol

The Cold River Soap Works doesn't get as much airtime as this quality tallow soap ought. The scents are delightful and the lather it produces is superb. Larry is a joy to deal with and puts together a quality product. The only issue is that he's the sole distributor (similar to Mike's Naturals) through his website. It certainly limits your reach. Well worth the effort to pick some up.

Pre: GFT Lime Skin Food
Brush: Rudy Vey Shavemac Custom 22mm 2 Band
Soap: P&B Spitfire
Razor: Standard
Blade: Feather
Post: Alum, witch hazel, TSW Afterbalm, Havana Splash

I think I underloaded this time around, lather couldnt take in much water and it doesn't lather explode like it normally does. Been having some issues with this brush lately, maybe I just need to use it more to further get the hang of the brush and let it break in as well. Shave was good, but could be better. I'll give the brush another go tomorrow with another soap.

The Havana Splash is an interesting one, upon application I expected more out of it, but it just seems to be moderate in scent, performance was okay not superb. I wonder if I will get it again or not. I'm enjoying the cheaper Ogallalas than this splash. Certainly smells like one of my favourite rums though, the Diplomatico Reserva. I wonder if the splash tastes sweet?

Yesterday's shave. I bought the Valobra hard soap after being very impressed with their soap stick. The puck was identical in performance and scent. I was expecting more fragrance, being the cologne scent, but it was a very mild soapy scent (even milder than MWF). Performance was top notch - creamy lather that had great glide and cushioning. Hard to fault. A three pass shave, pretty close, and good post shave feel. The mild scent worked nicely with the Alt Innsbruck A/S.

Soap: SV70

A/S: SV70

Was itching to get back to the SV70 soap after botching up the lather when last I used it. For a non-Tallow soap, the SV70 soaks up a load of water. Much improved lather this time, but I think still not quite spot on. The glide was not as smooth as I like.
After three passes and a clean-up, I was expecting some irritation. Nada, nix, none. As an added bonus, absolutely BBS. Leads me to believe that the lather was close this time around.
Applied the lovely matching SV70 aftershave lotion. Since last use, the contents of my bottle have thinned out, thus much easier to shake out of the bottle. Beautiful fresh citrus based scent - typically Italian.

Diplomatico - my favourite rum. Superb stuff, but wounds the wallet.

Occams Pre // Simpson CH1 // Progress, 3.5, Feather // Geo F Trumper's Sandalwood // Geo F Trumper's Sandalwood Skin Food // Ogallala Bay Rum Sandalwood

Back to the Sandalwood today with the dip in temperature. Plenty of cushion from the Geo F Trumper's which with the winds and my dry skin is a good thing. The usual 2 pass with no need for a touch up at all. Liberal use of skin food and After Balm prior to using the Ogallala which I like so much I have ordered full size bottles of the entire range.

Pre-Shave: Shower
Razor: Maggard Razors MR1 with V2 Open Comb
Blade: Personna Platinum
Soap/Cream: Occams Crushed Lime Shave Cream (Many thanks to @todras !)
Brush: Maggard Razors 22mm Synthetic Shaving Brush
A/S: Pinaud Clubman Citrus Musk Eau De Cologne
Post-Routine: hot rinse, alum, cold rinse, cologne

To my surprise I really enjoyed MR1 handle. It's still heavy but short enough to have good control of the angle.

A sample of Occams Crushed Lime shave cream was generously offered by @todras. Oh my gosh! It was amazing! Fantastic real scent of freshly crushed limes. Easy to lather. And it's quite frugal - the same amount of TOBS produces less amount lather. I had enough lather for at least 6 passes. And the lather was very slick and very cushioning. Amazing product!
