Firstly, congratulations @Sxot on your fantastic progress with the straight razor - you have come a long way in a short time :)

Second, thanks for putting Parabens out there. I believe we should all be talking more about the composition of the various products we slather on our faces daily. I think there's a widely held attitude that once you've ditched pressure-pak shaving foam, everything's fine. But as you point out, there are a number of things that have been adopted by shaving product creators from the mainstream cosmetics industry.

Parabens are a good place to start : like most things in life, the argument isn't simple black and white. While there are growing doubts about the longer term impact of Parabens on our health, they are probably a necessary evil until somebody comes up with a better alternative. Parabens are actually employed as preservatives to prevent fungal and microbial growth in cosmetic products that frequently live in the hostile environment of the bathroom, with the associated elevated temperatures and high humidity. The products most at risk are creams, balms and emulsions with their thicker textures. It is quite possible that some of these fungal and/or microbial growths pose a more immediate risk to health than exposure to Parabens. The good news is that many agencies are currently researching replacements for Parabens, driven by consumer demand.

For those who would like a quick top-down on Parabens and their relationship to health, http://www.besthealthmag.ca/best-looks/beauty/parabens-what-are-they-and-are-they-really-that-bad/ will help inform you.

Thanks for the encouragement. It sounds like I was bragging, but I noted my inexperience with SR's in an attempt to say "I don't really know what I am doing so my time to shave is not indicative." Not, hey, look at me, one week in and going fast. I figured all you seasoned experts would be finishing up at the 15min mark or so. Am I wrong? Not that we should be rushing although I didn't muck around today. Today's was only two pass, I'd done 30 laps on the strop the last night so only did 20 today. I washed my face in the shower so skipped the normal pre-shave wash/massage so there is probably 5min there...

My dear wife does like to tell people I now take longer to get ready than she does. I am not entirely sure that is correct but yes, I can't start getting into the shower 10min before departure like I used to.

Parabens are one of those things where the scientific community cannot agree. The US Drug control mob did a review last year and stuck to their stance that current permitted maximums are fine but there are obviously those who do not agree. I found pier reviewed articles that have shown that Parabens increase cell damage under UVB so that is enough for me to keep it off my face. In the end, there are plenty of great products that do an equal job without Parabens so for me, I'll stay away from it. Each to their own though, just wanted to mention it's inclusion in Mrysol Emulsion.

Brush: Shavemac 2-band
Soap: Martin de Candre Fougere
Razor: Kirby Beard
Blade: Personna Blue [2]
After-shave: B&M Barrister's Reserve Classic Splash

I used a new brush and it was superb. It felt fantastic on the face. A great backbone that generated and then released so much lather. Such a joy to use -wow! It's not a huge brush but it really is a perfect size for me as I face lather. For the first time it's really pushed badger brushes into the next level for me. I never got why they were so revered and sought after but this brush...simply wow!

As and aside, someone asked about the blade gap on the Kirby Beard the other day. So here's a side profile photo showing the gap. Honestly, it's not as bad as it looks- it is efficient, but yet very smooth & comfortable.

I finished with a sample of B&M's new "Barrister's Reserve" Classic Splash. It felt great on the face and left my face feeling tops. I can pick up a lot of smokiness in the scent which is quite pleasant. It's a generous 10mL sample which -once opened- is easy to spill so I've poured it into a little bottle. Should be good for another few splashes.

Mini-Giveaway
As a celebration of this fantastic shave of mine, I've got 2 more sachets of this splash to give away. So if you'd like to try it, PM me and I'll post it to you. First two get the samples! [emoji6]

Sample 1: gone!

(I'll update this post once they are gone.)

Lovely looking brush. From where did you acquire it?

Razor: Slim
Blade: Vintage Wilkinson Blade
Soap: Yeti Snot
Brush: Omega 10005
A/S: Floid Vigoroso + extra menthol

Couldn't find a P74 quick enough this morning, and didn't fancy a month plus on the same blade so went with an old Wilkie instead.

Oh and in response to @MrT's timing: 12 minutes including a shower.

That's quick!!

So in reality that's probably a 8 or 9 minute shave. How many passes was that?

Facebook Aussie BST.

Oh, and my shave took longer today as I savoured it: 25 mins. Normally shorter. [emoji4]

Pre-Shave: Occams pre-shave soap, cold water
Razor: Wolfman WR1-SB with WRH2
Blade: Vintage Wilkinson Sword Made in England (2)
Brush: Rudy Vey Shavemac
Lather: Stirling Lavender & Bergamot
Post-shave: Alum, Barrister & Man Kyovu Original, South Australian Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The blade is still super sharp and smooth - too sharp? Don't know yet, but it was a fantastic shave!

3 passes, and included getting dressed after. I just noticed the time as I put my watch back on. So more like a 5 minute shave.

I have no idea how you do a 5 minute 3 pass shave. I'd barely be starting my first pass at 5mins. Got to fill the sink, load the brush, make the lather, tweak the lather, apply the lather... That's at least a couple of mins right there!

But you've inspired me. I'll go for a quicky tomorrow.

I do it all in the shower - cold water.
3rd pass is pretty much just a quick tidy up. I don't use a mirror so just have to work out the places that are a little rough by hand.

Pre shave: GFT lime skin food
Brush: shavemac 177
Soap: Dr harris lavender
Razor: iKon B1 slant
Blade: feather
Post shave: alum, Thayers wh with aloe, Aesop Moroccan neroli

Another excellent shave today. The shavemac effortlessly whipped up some heavenly lather from the Dr harris lavender(I gave up on my arlington puck).
Feathers are still my go-to blades. As long as I have good lather going, it just effortlessly glides off my face, obliterating the whiskers.
Finish off with a nice alum tinge no burn, WH and the post shave balm.

Floïd Blue, Adieu

Floïd Blue, adieu, goodbye. One more bottle of this magnificent aftershave has gone - of course with my joy and pleasure - and I need a new one. I fortunately still have some bottles in my shave den, so I am not out of it yet. It is however so bad Colomer discontinued Floïd Blue and it seems they are not changing their mind. This is what some retailers told me so far, they all told me Floïd Blue is out of production. As for the shave, a genuine pleasure thanks to the smoothness of Mastro Livi Grifetto and Cella shaving cream, including the Omega 48 brush, one of the very best bristle brushes around.
  • Pre-Shave: RazorGuy Pre-Shave Oil
  • Soap: Cella Shaving Cream
  • Brush: Omega Bristle Brush 48
  • Strop: Mastro Livi Travel Loom Strop and Hand Palm
  • Razor: Mastro Livi Grifetto Mother of Pearl, 6/8 Full Hollow, Round Point
  • Post-Shave: Alum Block
  • Post-Shave: Umbria Extravirgin Oil
  • After Shave: Floïd Blue

Soap: B&M Cheshire
Brush: Vie-Long white horse
Razor: Feather AS-D2
Blade: Feather (3)
Post-shave: Soap Commander Integrity balm
Time: 10 mins

Basically the same shave as yesterday. Inspired by @eggbert and his super speedy shave yesterday, I had a crack at a speedy shave myself.

Seeing as I only shaved yesterday, I decided to skip the WTG pass and go straight to the XTG. So just two full passes (XTG in both directions), plus touch ups.

The result? Good shave and heaps better than a 24hr beard. It's nice to go to work having clearly shaved that morning. But it wasn't as good as yesterday's shave, nor as enjoyable. Maybe because it's two days in a row and I normally leave a day in between, but I definitely got more sting from the alum, plus I had a very small red spot. I suspect my technique was lacking as I rushed it, probably way too much pressure.

But I wonder whether the mild razor with sharp blade combo isn't great for a speedy shave. I find when I use something like a weber or r41, I do much fewer strokes and get more whiskers. Less need for touch ups.

Anyway, still a great shave, but I might skip tomorrow... :)

That Maca Root is good stuff - used it early on in my shaving life.

As a simple option for beginners a Body Shop Synthetic brush and some of these is not a bad option. Very simple to arrange too!
